No more time for niceties or for dancing around the issue... the politicians need to hear the crux of the issue loud & clear!!!

... And they need to hear it NOW!!!

Honorable Senator/Congressman XXX

As a registered voter & concerned American, I am writing because I am appalled by the opportunistic push for more Federal gun control in the wake of the Virginia Tech. massacre, and I want you to understand, in no uncertain terms, that further infringements on the right to keep & bear arms will simply not be tolerated.

Using the deplorable actions of a certifiable madman as justification to deprive law abiding citizens of their Second Amendment freedoms is not only morally repugnant, but it will carry with it the gravest of political consequences come election day... mark my words.

Americans of all political affiliations are waking up to the realization that they are ultimately responsible for their own safety & security, and they are arming themselves in record numbers. Thus, you embrace the concept of gun control at your own risk. Voters have long memories and November of 2008 is not that far away.

I, along with millions of Americans, intend to keep a close eye on how you deal with this issue in the upcoming months, so if you value your own political future, and that of your party, you will heed my advice... gun control is a losing issue!

Respectfully,

NYP

Honorable Senator/Congressperson XXX,

As a registered voter & politically active American, I strongly urge you to oppose any & all efforts to enact new Federal gun control measures in the aftermath of the Virginia Tech. shootings.

I could argue that most (if not all) Federal gun control legislation constitutes an unambiguous and unconstitutional infringement of our Second Amendment freedoms...but I won't.

Instead I'll be more pragmatic and point out the following: The support & passage of any new gun control measures could very likely cost your political party control of the U.S. House, Senate, and White House come the 2008 elections.

For the sake of perspective, I will point out that the 1994 Federal "Assault Weapons" ban was originally passed in a Democrat-controlled Congress by a very slim margin and by a slightly larger margin in the Senate.

The result... In the 1994 national elections, three months after passage, the Democrats lost nine seats in the Senate and 54 seats in the House. There is no denying that gun control, specifically the "Assault Weapons" ban" was a very large part of why the Democrats lost the House for the first time in 50 years. Former President Bill Clinton once even estimated that voting for the ban cost 20+ Democrat Representatives their seats.

Senator/Congressperson XXX, I speak for many gun owning & non-gun owning Americans alike, when I say that how you & your colleagues handle this issue will deeply influence our actions in the voting booth come November of next year. You must understand that we will no longer tolerate the infringement of that which "...shall not be infringed."

Thus, I implore you to do everything within your power to ensure that any efforts to enact new Federal gun control measures in the aftermath of the Virginia Tech. shootings will be rebuffed.

Thank you for your time, and I look forward to your reply.

Regards,

Dear Senator/Congressman XXX,

In the aftermath of the horrific Virginia Tech. massacre I want to make it abundantly clear that America’s gun owners expect that you will respect & defend their Second Amendment freedoms in spite of the hysteria & hyperbole surrounding this issue. Any attempts to pass new Federal gun control legislation will be remembered none too fondly on election day, 2008.

Please understand that our frustration stems from years of incremental erosion to our God given and constitutionally acknowledged personal freedoms. Any attempts to further weaken our right to keep & bear arms will be viewed as a rejection of our nation’s founding principals, and as a betrayal of the millions of American gun owners who work, raise families, pay taxes, and most importantly… vote!

Thus, I implore you to stand in opposition to any and all attempts to pass new restrictive gun control legislation. Your sworn oath to the Constitution and your obligation to this Republic’s law abiding citizens hang in the balance. And if that's not motivation enough, know this: Your support of gun control may cost you your next election.

Thank you for your time, and I would greatly appreciate a reply in order to learn your position on this very important issue.

Sincerely,

Dear Senator/Congressman XXXXX,

This letter is in reference to any legislation currently being introduced in the House/Senate that would further infringe on every American's constitutionally protected right to keep & bear arms. I demand that you OPPOSE any & all measures aimed at stripping away our freedoms in the name of "gun control."

I have decided that I am now a one-issue voter. I do this because I’m a law-abiding citizen who is sick and tired of having his rights stripped away by people that are ignorant on the subject. Those that take the time to study the issue of "gun control" know that when you restrict the right to self-defense from lawful citizens, crime actually increases in those areas. This is because by definition, criminals do not obey the law (if they did, they would not be criminals.) I do not believe that restrictive "gun control" measures have ever saved a life. In point of fact, & as seen on the campus of Virginia Tech., "gun control" actually costs lives!

I want to be perfectly clear here... elected officials and political candidates who support ANY form of restrictive gun control WILL LOSE MY VOTE and the votes of my family members. Please do your part to cast the flawed concept of "gun control" on to the ash heap of failed ideas.

Best regards,

Honorable Senator/Congressman XXX,

As an avid sportsman and registered voter, I want to encourage you to work against the passage of any & all legislation that threatens to infringe upon every American’s constitutionally acknowledged right to keep & bear arms.

I fear that if left unchecked, gun control measures will continue to worsen to the point that the right to bear arms will be a hollow concept, and the individual citizen’s right to personal protection will be further negated. Rather than further limiting the types of weapons that honest, responsible, law-abiding citizens have the right to possess; I encourage you to focus your energies on increasing the consequences for those who illegally use firearms in the commission of violent crimes.

Senator/Congressman XXX, I must implore you to stand in opposition to any legislation that threatens to strangle my God given rights. I believe that you and your party will benefit by gaining the favor of gun owners such as myself and the millions of other Americans who step up to actively support their Second Amendment freedoms. I am deeply passionate about this issue, and I know several others who take gun control into serious consideration when entering the voting booth.

You only stand to benefit by supporting our inalienable right to bear arms.

Thank you for your time and I look forward to your reply.

Sincerely,

C'mon folks... stop wasting your time with all those meaningless online polls & surveys!

Do something that has a REAL impact on the protection & preservation of your 2nd. Amendment freedoms... Write, call, fax, and E-mail your elected Reps.!!!

I wrote the letters. What else do you want.... that I lick the envelope for you as well? :D

Something to keep in mind when writing your congress critters:

Although writing a real letter gets the most attention, after the great Anthrax scare, USPS letters to your congress critter take weeks instead of days to reach your member. WRITE LETTERS and MAIL THEM, but be sure to FAX them to your congress critter before mailing. Personal E-Mail does not get as much attention, and web based email just clutters their inbox. At best, they just count the number coming from that web based system. VOTE.COM will automatically generate email for you. Do you think your congress critter will ever read that? And I recently saw a thread where folks were going to bradybunch.org and using their server to send pro-gun email. Is that really a good idea? I suspect all your congress critter knows is that he or she got X number of letters from BB.C. NOT a good idea if you think about it in those terms.

WRITE REAL LETTERS and FAX them before mailing them. That is the best approach, short of calling or even VISITING your congress critter's office.

You could buy them stamps. :)

Seriously. Excellent work.

Another suggestion for all of our members. Don't be afraid to print off many extra letters, unsigned, and take them to your lazy gun owning friends. If all they have to do is sign a letter, and give you money for a stamp, you will be able to send a lot more letters that way.

What are you waiting for?
I have already sent an initial email to all my reps:
In light of the current tragedy I feel that I have not done enough to help prevent it. I intend to do much more.
It is my firm belief that gun-control advocates are as responsible for the Virginia Tech tragedy as is the shooter.
Taking away peoples right to defend themselves is irresponsible and reprehensible.
Creating gun-free areas only points the criminals to where they will be most successful.

This can not go on any longer.
I will do my utmost to see that no politician remains in office if they do not support the right of people to defend themselves in their homes or wherever else they may find themselves.

I sincerely hope that you will be among those that support this natural and necessary right.
And have received some responses...

I am currently working on more specific letters to my reps, as well as to businesses that have anti policies(posted in this forum).

It's a start, but it's not enough.
I have just begun.

It could just be that mailing a letter takes more effort than sending an email, and so is seen as showing more concern.

I follow up many emails with letters and in some cases I'm only mailing letters.

I have heard that snail mail is more effective than e-mail. Why is this the case?
It could just be that mailing a letter takes more effort than sending an email, and so is seen as showing more concern.
Yep. Writing letters is a lost art form. Those who are willing to write a letter are also willing to take the time to vote. Sending email is easier than voting, and congress critters know that. Sending bulk email from a political web site server is too easy. They just ignore them.

WRITE REAL LETTERS and FAX them before mailing them, because of the delays in getting snail mail to congress because of modern biohazard screenings.

It's not just a crime...

In the spirit of using the Brady Bunch's on-line email form as a source of useful text, I modified their provided web form text for a more appropriate snail-mail response...
Subject: Enough Is Enough: I Demand Nationwide Concealed Carry

Dear [Decision Maker],

IT'S NOT JUST A CRIME - IT IS TERRORISM!

I am outraged by this week's tragedy at Virginia Tech. It is much too easy for defenseless students to get corralled into so-called "gun-free" zones in this country and as a result, without the ability to slap back, American academic innocents will continue to be claimed as they have in Beslan, Russia by Chechen terrorists and now in Virginia.

It is time for you to take steps to empower Americans and prevent tragedies like the one at Virginia Tech.

I support state Concealed Carry laws and a National version that will eliminate islands of safe criminal conduct so that un-challenged terrorist attacks such as what has recently occurred will disappear. So should you.

What are you going to do to stop the terrorist threat in America, throw your cell phone at them?

Sincerely,

[Your Name]
[Your Address]
[City, State ZIP]

Get at it!

Keep in mind that there's a Fine Line between "letter" and "rant." Keep them short and simple - this has two benefits:

1) The critter's minion has to spend less time reading it;

and

2) It gives you fewer opportunities to look like a dumbass.

(aka, after you hit the amazing trick shot on your first try, smile, and put the boomstick away, and don't let your buds try you for double or nothing)

N Y patriot(and anyone else interested):

The last time you did a bunch of letters(back when we stopped the 1994 AWB reauthorization) I cut and pasted them into my e-mail, changed the wording slightly, and went to kinkos.

All I asked folks to do was sign the darn things, I used self stick printed address labels, and had them give me 50 cents each for the stamp, paper, and envelope.

I got HUNDREDS of letters sent out weekly this way. I plan on doing it again.

Use a FREE 30 Day Trial of EFAX to Tell Your Elected Reps. NO to Gun Control!

http://home.efax.com/s/r/ny_search_2?VID=33675

Sign up... it's a free one month trial that you can cancel at any time, & it allows you to send up to 30 faxes during the trial period (from your E-mail).

C'mon folks... add easy to send faxes to your manual of arms!

i snail mailed all of mine. I still think a letter in the hand has more impact. will email as well, i don't have a fax.

If you use EFAX, you don't need a fax machine. That is the whole point... they allow you send faxes using your E-mail account!

Good stuff, and free. Try it out!

I have heard that snail mail is more effective than e-mail.

Not always true. I paged for the Alabama House of Representatives. They throw form letters away by the stacks. The only thing my Rep paid less attention to were form emails. In order of effectiveness I would say Hand Written Letters > Unique Emails > Form Letters > Form Emails. This might not be the case with the Feds, just my experience here.
