I'll post more when I can, as I have a paper due at 5pm and need to finish it. But . I was email yesterday by the Associate Dean of Students yesterday and he told me that I urgently needed to meet with him, yet he gave me no reason. As an upstanding student this gave me a great cause for concern. Also my profile pic at the time was this (as it still is):
vtech9523.jpg
So *** gives? I'm a threat or a concerned student?

I did meet with him today, I got the email yesterday, and since he only said that it was urgent I met with him I was very concerned, as the MSU officer on the Facebook group Concealedcampus, I felt that this might be part of it. It wasn't. I explained to him that I'm a gun rights activist, I shoot in IPSC, IDPA, F-class, and 3-gun. I feel like he was kinda feeling me out, so to speak. In brief, a professor in my department saw pictures of me holding firearms (an ar-15 no less) and reported me. Ironically they didn't complain about the pictures of me shoting in an F-class match, or my visit to the CMP store. I think this is a possible case of baiased discrimination against me for being a gunowner. I met with him (associate dean of students) and he had screenshots of my facebook profile with me holding the rifle. I'm more than a bit pissed off, and I'm in no trouble.

Also, if I can I'm gonna use this to get CCW legal on campus. IE use the fact that I was hassled due to the fact that I'm a gunowner

More to follow after 5pm

EDIT Here is what happened in a more clear manner:

At 12:30 pm (approx) Thursday I recieved this email from the Associate dean of students, I've only taken out information that you can use to contact him, as there isn't a need for a firemission YET.
"Marc,

I need you to contact the Dean of Students' office immediately and make
an appointment to get on my schedule before 4pm Friday.

Th3333 Bo3333333
Associate Dean of Students
Mississippi State University?"

BTW, My first name is spelled: Mark (it made me feel all nice and warm inside when he took the time to look up my name). Note he gave me NO REASON as to what this is about. I emailed him back asking what it was a bout, and he didn't email me back. I called the office and told the secretary that I had an email from him and wanted to know why he wished to meet with me instead she said "let's get you an appointment" and wouldn't answer the question, when I asked if I could speak to him she said he'd be in meetings all day. At this point I feared the worst...some sort of backlash against gunowners that are students, however I live off campus. I have never done anything illegal, or acted in any way that would violate MSU's honor code.
I talked to my advisor (a horticulture professor) and he knew of no action against me as to any academic misconduct. Of course...I assumed it was about guns. I'm a member of several gunrights groups in Facebook, and I have a picture up as my profile picture that Oleg Volk made.

At this point I'm under alot of stress, I have two papers due at 5pm on friday and an online test, and I have this kind of crap to worry about.

So I head off to meet him and arrive at 12:56pm CST, sign in with the secretary. the Associate Dean comes out and invites me into his office, then closes the door. I stand until he asks me to sit. He then asks if I'm wondering why I'm here. I think "yeah no sh*t DA" and I say "Yes infact I have been quite worried about why you want to meet with me, I've never committed academic misconduct, an honor code violation, or broken any laws". He says that a professor in my department saw pictures ofme on my facebook that disturbed him and reported me. I explaind that I shoot IDPA, IPSC, 3-Gun, F-class, and I'm a gun rights activist NOT a Cho type. He goes on to tell me how the world has changed like after 9/11. Which IMO is BS, if VT hadn't banned students from carry this massacre could have been prevented or mitigated in scale. Please note that I don't have perfect memory, I'm just typing what I remembered . I go on to say that they handled this incorrectly by not communicating with me batter. Then I talk with him about campus security, and I get the chance to explain to him that I've gotton to play a hostage in a local SWAT training event, and that I've shot with individual offiers of SPD. He even gave me the professors name (if I was a psycho is that really a good Idea?) and he suggested email and meet with him. He almost went on almost saying tha I should apologize to the professor, I interupted him and said I'm not going to apologize and that I would meet with him to allay his fears. I also say that he could have come to me if he was concerned. He also stated that he has met with several other students (10-15) about this as well. I think this is a pretty ****ty way to CYA, as Cho was mentally ill, and pictures of me holding guns that does not mean.
OH, BTW, their new plan may be to have emergency sirens that have voice capability, still his idea of keeping them safe is having us cower locked inside class rooms (despite the fact that most can't be locked without a key).

A bit more was said but this is the jist. I've requested that he give me the screen shots of my facebook profile so I may better review them, and if get them I'll post them here.

My profile contains multiple progun quotes, groups about the NRA, IDPA, and other shooting activities. The mesasge that my profile picture sends (to a rational human is that I wanted the tragedy to be avoided.

I'm pretty offended, but I don't think that I have any legal recourse, unfortunately.

Edit, my advisor is not the professor that saw the pictures, it was another professor in my department. I might add that I have never met the man on any occasion. Also I was informed by the associate dean of students that I was the ONLY let m e repeat: ONLY student turned in by this professor. I sense a witchhunt, and I will be compaining to the higher ups as soon as I've either spoken to my uncle who is a lawyer or another lawyer.

Also I won't be giving out the name of the professor who turned me in as I don't want this "man" to feel threatened by people compaining about his actions.

I posted this first on ar15.com earlier today, but I thought I'd cross post here since I spend alot of time browsing the high road and I enjoy the community over here.

This is just part of your education. In the future you will have to deal with many brain-dead idiots.

I hope you didn’t mention 'Constitution' or '1st Amendment' or '2nd Amendment' around him. Big words just don't work when you are speaking to the wrong end of a horse.

Call the Dean right now and ask him if he contacted all Korean students about "feeling them out"?

Legal remedy? Maybe not, but you can bring the heat as this is truly outrageous.

1. Contact the NRA at once;
2. Contact the MGO at once;
3. Write a letter to the student newspaper about how you were singled out for public exercise of civil rights and you object to the chilling effect your administration is causing;
4. Contact the ACLU (yes, really, contact them and demand they do something about a college administration's chilling effect on free speech and civil rights, bring up the Korean analogy with them);
5. Above all, contact the alumni association. Write a letter to their magazine and tell them what happened. You just grabbed the administration by the important parts, their money.

Outrageous bigoted behavior by our liberal ivory tower betters! They gave you a huge opening, make them pay for it.

I'm an NRA member (2 years and going) who should I contact at the NRA.... there are alot of numbers

I wish you luck. Me? I prefer to keep a low profile. But that is just me. I don't want to attract attention from the campus police incase I do decide to CCW.

Note he gave me NO REASON as to what this is about.

Now, I don't know about ya'll, but I do not return calls/email, etc if the person contacting me does not tell me who they are, who they represent (if they represent anyone or anything- i.e. a company), and what they want. As far as that goes, if you don't provide me with some basic information, I did not get your message.

Start with the NRA-ILA I would guess, but I am not too sure. I might also contact the GOA and the JPFO, too.

There isn't much I can do to help you, but good luck! We are behind you.

Mark, it'd be nice if we had e-mail addresses and phone numbers for the dean, the head of your department, and the school newspaper. I know you're in crunch time right now, but see what you can do.

This kind of witch hunt cannot be tolerated.

What if the professor had been upset at seeing you reading a "banned" book? Or entering a gay bar? Or that he'd seen you in an obviously interracial relationship? Or that he didn't approve of your church?

Where does it stop?

Mark,

I think that you did good. You stood your ground, showed no reservations about explaining your interest in firearms and from what you said, carried yourself well. Your conduct thus far has been a good start with respect to your role as an ambassador for the 2nd Ammendment. As for the comments regarding the Prof. I tend to agree, but I think that perhaps, instead of "Zumbo-ing" this person, you should approach them in a manner that reflects your concerns and try to work it out before you call in the "fast movers". :)

Regards,

TC

I believe your best course of action would be to contact an attorney you or your family/friends trust and ask their advice. I would also suggest having such person present (for anyone) when a dean or other academic higher up requests a meeting with you but will not disclose the purpose of the meeting.

Sistema1927,
the sheep don't like us because we look like wolves to them. They can't tell the difference until they are being eaten.

I give you points bub, you were nicer than I would have been.

If the secretary would not tell me the story, I would have informed her to give her boss the following message.

"It is the end of the semester. If this matter is so unimportant that you cannot tell me what it is about, I am not wasting my time being jerked into your office like a dog." and hung up.

My suggestion, try to take the professor out shooting(when you get some time). Try to convince him that if he's going to freak out over guns, he should at least be familiar with them. Heck, you might even be able to win a convert . Most of these gun discrimination incidents seem to be caused by the stereotype put out by the media and spread by the public school systems(At least they seem to here) that guns are inherently evil and that anyone who would want one must be a violent person. People fear what they do not understand, it's a natural human response. So if you want to get the gun grabbers off your back, take one(or a few) shooting. Just my 2 cents.

What are "MSU," and "SPD"?????
MSU = Mississippi state university. SPD, I would assume, is Starkville Police Dept.

Be happy it didn't result in something like this.

To: All Students
From: Dean of Students
Subject: AAAAAAHHHHHHH!!!!!

Students,

Quick! Everybody run and lock yourself in the first small classroom with only one entrance and hide behind your 1/2 inch thick pressed wood desks! And whatever you do, don't engage this guy with the pictures of himself on facebook with that assault rifle! He MUST be a madman for liking and owning guns!

With Best Regards,
Your Associate Dean of Students (Who is currently locked in his office with four armed LEOs watching his *ss while you pray forgiveness from you maker)

Sometimes people don't make any damn sense. Sorry to hear what you're going through, and I'm sure many around the nation are experiencing the same thing.

I too have been a victim numerous times of the "i need to see you now, but can't tell you why" scheme. After the second one, I reply to the email with, "sorry, unless you tell me why, I can't come." Once public safety pulled this crap while I was at the range and I resorted to the "my mommy told me not to talk to strangers" line.

Are those photos in a dorm room at your school? And if so, does that jibe with campus rules?

If not, that might be part of the reason for the extra love, care and attention.

What are the details on your AR, by the way? (Upper / Lower / interesting parts, if any) I'd like one day to be in the market for an AR ;)

This is why I never put personal photos on anything that just anyone can access. I do not connect myspace or facebook accounts to my school or any organization compromised of anyone I do not personally know. I may have an account just to connect to the organization with no content, but I try to stay anonymous.

What you should do is contact the ACLU, NRA, school newspaper, local newspaper, and give us the email address or contact info of your dean.

My suggestion when talking to these "authority" types in similar situations is to work into your conversation your active social life with friends and family, other hobbies as well as your commitment to receiving a first rate education.

This takes one of the "markers" they are looking for away - that of being the maladjusted loner.

That and be ready to be conversant in the larger points of 2nd amendment politics should the conversation drift in that direction. I wouldn't unload on him, just enough to establish your bona fides as having political beliefs.

Otherwise it sounded like you handled it well - you stood your ground and represented yourself well.

Please keep us posted on this!

...and call for backup if any of those "anti" folk there start setting up stakes and piles of firewood! :what:

interesting.

one of the dean's at my school knows about me and guns (and CWP) because of the paper I'm writing for him ("the big one"). Ever since the VT incident, it's almost as though I've gained respect, and he has lots of questions for me. He seems genuinely interested in the topic of concealed carry all of a sudden.

I was once "interviewed" by the Dean of Students at the law school I attended after applying for a pistol permit. The sheriff routinely notified the Dean anytime a student applied for a permit, even though this is beyond what the law requires. All this because a student had shot a couple people on the campus several years earlier. She just wanted to make sure I was "ok." After giving her a subtle verbal smackdown, I let her know I was feeling terrific. So I know how you feel. I also was not told of the purpose of the meeting, but since I had just applied for the permit the day before, I had a strong suspicion that Officer Friendly had betrayed my privacy amongst my academic colleagues.

As a general matter, however, I avoid having photos of me holding any kind of weapon posted on the internet. There are just too many ways stuff like that can bite you in the rear. If you do it, I would limit it to photos at a range or some such thing. Not in front of your apartment window with other apartments clearly visible in the background. That's just bound to freak someone out. You can of course completely disregard this advice as it is your life and you were doing nothing illegal. JMHO.
