Washington, Apr 18 - WASHINGTON, D.C. (April 18) — In the aftermath of Monday’s deadly shooting in Blacksburg, Virginia, Congressman Dennis Kucinich (D-OH) is proposing a comprehensive, three-point plan to deal with the violence plaguing America, including a ban on handguns.

“The tragic events in Blacksburg, Virginia which took 33 lives are not an isolated example of the effects of gun violence in America. In fact, about 32 people perish each and every day in America in hand gun related incidents,” Kucinich said in a speech to Congress today.

“It is becoming painfully obvious that the easy availability of handguns constituents a growing national crisis of public health and safety, one that calls for a powerful, wide-ranging response from Congress.

“The level of violence in our society constitutes a national emergency. I’m offering an approach to change America’s direction away from death and disintegration and toward life and social cohesiveness.”

Already this Congress, Kucinich has introduced HR 808 and HR 676—two bills that directly relate to the events of Blacksburg. HR 808, legislation to establish a Department of Peace and Nonviolence, addresses the issue of domestic violence, gang violence, and violence in the schools, which is reflected in the current homicide rates. HR 808 has 62 cosponsors.

“The bill provides hope for a transformation through education of our children in principles of nonviolence and support for existing community groups and professionals whose dedication would be empowered by a national commitment to peace and nonviolence,” Kucinich said.

A recent study indicates that many perpetrators of murder had histories of mental illness. The lack of parity for mental healthcare remains one of the most serious deficiencies in healthcare in the United States – the system has long been lacking in substantive support of mental health. HR 676, Medicare for All, would establish a universal not-for-profit healthcare system, which would provide full and comprehensive mental healthcare. More than 14,000 physicians support HR 676 and it is cosponsored by 63 Members of Congress.

Kucinich is currently drafting legislation that would ban the purchase, sale, transfer, or possession of handguns by civilians. A gun buy-back provision will be included in the bill.

“America is being engulfed in violence every day. Let’s show them we have the wisdom and the courage to come from our hearts to meet this challenge,” Kucinich said.

Kucinich is a certified moonbat. I wouldn't expect this to go very far at all.

Department of Peace and Nonviolence

That sounds like it was dreamed up while sitting in a hot tub. More bureaucracy, just like after 9-11; or more accurately, restructure it, give it a new name, and fail to fund half of it to make it look like there is more.

Less freedom, more money spent on them pesky po' folks...that'll fix it.

Kucinich has "tax increase" written all over him.

The pro-gun people in his district needs to start a recall of him for not upholding the Constitution of the United states as he swore ti when he was sworn in, in particular;

Amendment II
A well regulated Militia, being necessary to the security of a free State, the right of the people to keep and bear Arms, shall not be infringed.

That would basically be a suicide pact. A significant portion of the population owns handguns and will take offense at having them taken away. A much more significant portion of the population owns handguns than owned slaves in the 19th century. Few in law enforcement or the military would cooperate with such an edict and it would probably end up greatly decreasing respect for the government. The political backlash would be far worse than 1994.

And yeah Cuckoonich is a nutjob. If anything he is more useful for our side because it exposes the fools who sign on to his crazy plans.

Kusinich has sponsored 88 bills since 1997. Of that I think only 77 even made it out of committee, and only one was ever passed.

I don't think we need to get our knickers in a wad over this one.

And what would they do if we refused to participate in the "gun buyback program?" Are they going to suspend the 4th Amendment in order to come into our houses and forcibly take our guns?...... yeah, that would go really well....

Similar things have been tried, but the wording this time is rather well written for teary eyed knee jerkers. And thats who keeps voting this guy into office. People who have no common sense and merely want politically correct feel good legislation.

Methinks if this passes, lots of people will have sold off guns to imaginary people or bought a shovel and a 5 gallon bucket of cosmoline..

In my life if it ever came down to it, I can think of a particular state that might offer shelter against said impending doom.
Adaptation would have to be studied.

It is total embarrassment to have to admit that Kucinich is from my state of Ohio. :banghead: This POS continues to spew his garbage now that he is in Congress. We have listened to it for years in the Ohio Legislature and I just don't get why the people of the Cleveland area continue to vote this idiot in to office.

:cuss: :fire:

Really?? Alcohol and Automobiles Kill about 140 people per day when will he be banning those?? At least guns Don't cause global warming and threaten the extinction of the human race ( BARFF) Medical mistakes kill 300 per day according to the AMA's own numbers, will we be banning doctors and Hospitals??

Looking on the bright side...

It's always good to have a politician around that you can point to, whenever someone claims that the "new, improved" Democrats don't want to ban guns -

Having lived in Lakewood, I think you can assume Kucinich is a product of voting straight Democrat and some name recognition. His actual qualities or lack thereof don't really matter that much. However, he would surely loose to a strong Afro candidate, who would inherently have overwhelming Democrat support. If you look at what seems to matter to him, you can tell what constituency he tries to serve or for which he is a pretty good fit.

As we saw in the last Presidential election, the State as a whole tips toward the conservative, certainly of the well-scrubbed, white, church-going, family-oriented variety.

When someone calls Dennis "The Menace" Kook-cinich a 'moonbat', both that heavenly body and the nocturnal flying thingys are insulted.....

Department of Peace and Nonviolence
So the answer to violence is to create another government department...which is funded by taxation under the threat of violence. How will this Department of Peace and Nonviolence enforce Peace and Nonviolence? Probably with, you guessed it, violence.

Who keeps voting for this guy?!?!

Foolish liberals that move here from states with better weather. They and Left-wing only voters in Cleveland. He wouldn't last 2 seconds in my district after pulling for bills like that. Department of Peace and Non-violence? Sounds like a name that could be given to the PD on Demoliton Man.

A much more significant portion of the population owns handguns than owned slaves in the 19th century.

While this may be statistically correct, this probably isn't a phrase that will help your cause.

I can't imagine how much fun an anti could have rebutting this point: "Oh good! You're already agreeing that gun ownership is an archaic and immoral institution!"
