If you were to move to a PRO-GUN state, which one?

Is there any comparison of gun laws in the different states?
I frequently read articles concerning guns in the US and it would be good to get some background info.

...and the fun of hurricanes!

The extent to which hurricanes are an issue depends on where you live. I live inland about 70 miles from the Atlantic and 55 miles from the Gulf. We got some damage a few years back, but it was all tree damage. The wind itself is never strong enough this far inland to do much more than break off tree branches and topple a few trees. As long as you don't have a house surrounded by trees, you pretty much have nothing to worry about where I live.

Florida's nice, but crowded in my opinion.

Again, it depends on where you live. I live in a small city of about 70,000 people. Its big enough to have a decent movie theater, a nice selection of restaurants, adequate shopping and pretty much all the stuff you need for convenience. Its small enough that very little is more than five miles away and the traffic is very manageable. With the exception of one zip code, crime is relatively low. If I want to go to a theme park, a concert, a play a huge shopping mall or something like that, I can be in either Tampa or Orlando in 90 minutes. The beach is just over an hour away. Gainesville and the University of Florida campus is just 45 minutes north.

As for shooting, there is an excellent private pistol range owned by my gun club about ten miles southeast of town. There is a public shooting range for handguns, rifles and shotguns 30 miles east. There is a nice indoor pistol range about 40 miles north and a larger indoor facility about 40 miles south. If you are into long distance shooting, there is a big shooting complex near Tampa with a 1000 yard range that is supposed to be very nice.

There are a lot of nice places to live down here, including tons of great places on both coasts. The north-central interior where I live is rolling hills with live oaks and horse farms. Its very pretty in a completely different way than the more tropical spots further south. There are also some very nice areas around Orlando, such as Winter Park and Mount Dora. Orlando itself is too touristy for my taste.

Nah, don't come to Florida. Been here almost 28 years, gets really hot in summer. Gun prices are high (lots of demand). We have lizards in our lakes that will eat you. On the downside, noone speaks english anymore, and you have to be really creative to hide a pistol in running shorts and a t shirt. Joe

I moved, (last year was stationed), to the state where I will hopefully live for the rest of my days...Wyoming.

COME TO MISSISSIPPI, easy CCL, "Stand your ground" law, no waiting period, your car is an extension of your home so you can carry in your vehicle, and who needs ranges, we just shoot in the neighbors pasture...great hunting to boot...

HAHA, so true!
I've been in FL for 9 months. Comparing to NYC, it's a gun owner's paradise! I hate no Open Carry and no shooting at public open lands :-( otherwise it's a great state!

I moved from California for the exact reasons you mentioned. I am in New Hampshire now. I am paid more, it costs less, and I am significantly more free.

It was the best thing I have ever done.

I second that MISSISSIPPI

I am always suprised at how many mention Texas... NO open carry and the following list of prohibited places does not say "gun friendly" to me. If those that say Texas is gun friendly are correct, then the peoples attitude does not match the law.

PA has only 2 State mandated places off limit, Primary and Secondary schools (Elementary and High Schools) and Court houses.... and the court houses are required to provide lockers to check-in firearms... and Signs hold no legal weight. No required training for CCW... no fingerprinting, and it is only $25 for 5 years... Oh, and Open carry is legal.

Texas Prohibited places.

On objective vote for Texas

Honestly, it seems like the attitude you'll encounter regarding firearms depends more or less on where you are situated. As you leave the urban areas, the attitudes seem to lighten.

Aside from what's written as verbotten for carry, there are actually lots of places you can carry. I'd say on average, I probably end up removing my firearm and storing it in a vehicle about once or month due to a 30.06 or a restricted place. Other than that, smooth sailing.

AZ if you don't mind the heat, Reno/Sparks/Tahoe/Carson Nevada, Oregon, Washington, or Idaho would be my suggestions for an immediate move from Cali. Each state has its own problems. I made the move to Washington, and while I love the weather up here, I question if I made the right move. Taxes are silly up here, (Still less than Cali, though,) and the state really thinks that traffic enforcement and speed traps are a great way to increase revenue. Traffic tickets are easy to fight in Cali, but I don't think they are in any other state.

Oregon and AZ seem to have the most liberal firearms laws, AZ has open carry, and OR has CCW in bars. I would suggest looking at where you can work, house prices, and then visiting to make sure you can deal with the weather. AFter four years stationed aboard Yuma, AZ where the ambient temp on the flightline is between 135 and 150, I absolutley refuse to live in the heat. So the snow and rain of WA suits me just fine. But if you don't want to deal with the cold as much NV and AZ could be good choices. OR and WA will allow you to not stray too far from the Pacific if that's important to you.

If things go bad here in WA, I will try OR, or move to Arkansas, or Tennesee.

Good luck whatever your choice.

Only states which are class 3 friendly (SBS,SBR, DD, MG and SS) would be on my list. Someone mentioned Wa.St. and I know that isn't one of them.

I just wish my state would legalize CCW- Doyle bites! Other wise AK would be my choice if my health would allow it-AZ is a possibility after I retire, someday!

I live in NH and the CCW is easy to get.

Black guns are welcome.

MA libs are moving north in droves though and the state government is Dem controlled... for now. Property taxes are quite high but no sales or income taxes. Schools are great depending on the town you live in.

EDIT: You can even own full auto and silencers.

Florida bans carry in schools (includes colleges), courts, jails, police stations, school & professional athletic events, bars, polling places and meetings of government bodies. The only ones that really effect most people on a regular basis are the school, bar and athletic event restrictions, so its really not that bad. Carrying is permitted in state parks as well as National Forests. National Parks are, of course, still banned under Federal law.

One complaint that I do concur with is that guns are expensive here. I typically find that I have to pay at least $50 more than I would in Texas for the same gun. That's a pretty trivial gripe, as it only takes an afternoon at the range to spend that much on ammo.

F- :) That is what we are striving foe- I think you should have to pass an test to qualify for entry into FL. Speak english, not be from NY, drive without your blinker on, own at least one gun...etc. To many yanks and such comming to our state.

Virginia doesn't have the wide open spaces of the southwest, but it's not bad. Just stay far away from the semi-independent land known as Northern Virginia -- there be monsters there!

+1 for VA....It's really the only place i've ever lived since I was old enough to know any better. I find it pretty gun friendly. I live in NOVA and like scaring the urbanites with my open carry.
