COLLINSVILLE, Ala. (AP) - Federal and state agents arrested six men and seized firearms and explosives during a series of raids in northeast Alabama Thursday morning, including one at a camper strewn with military gear where authorities said the owner was recruiting for a militia.
Eric Kehn, a spokesman with the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosive, said both firearms and explosives were seized in the raids.
According to a statement released by the Department of Justice, the ATF, along with state and local law enforcement, recovered 130 grenades, an improvised rocket launcher with live rounds, a grenade launcher, a machine gun, a short barreled shot-gun, two silencers, numerous other firearms, 2500 rounds of ammunition, explosive components, approximately 70 Improvised Explosive Devices (IED), and commercial fireworks. Also recovered was enough ammunition to fill a U-Haul trailer, and over 120 marijuana plants. While executing the search warrants, officers encountered booby traps at one location.
The six arrested -- Raymond Kirk Dillard and Adam Lynn Cunningham, both from Collinsville, Bonnell Hughes of Crossville, Michael Wayne Bobo of Trussville, Randall Garrett Cole of Gadsden, and James Ray McElroy of Collinsville -- appeared before a federal magistrate in Birmingham Thursday.
The criminal complaint charges the men with conspiracy to make a firearm, which carries a maximum penalty of five years in prison, and a fine of $250,000.
Bobo was charged with being a drug user in possession of a firearm, which carries a maximum penalty of ten years in prison, and a fine of $250,000.
They dwill remain in federal custody and are scheduled to appear for detention hearings on May 1. An indictment has not been filed at this time, but the press release stated that “additional charges are likely.”
At Collinsville, neighbors and friends of Jeff Osborne described him as a former Marine in his 40’s who lives in a camper painted with green camouflage design full of military items, including canteens, first aid kits, canvas or nylon sacks and military garb.
Another raid was at a house off U.S. 11 about a quarter-mile from Collinsville School. Officials at the school said they decided to cancel classes for about 650 students from grades kindergarten through 12 because of the swarm of police vehicles.
DeKalb Sheriff Jimmy Harris said the ATF recommended dismissing classes for safety reasons.
