Looking for some advice.
I'm purchasing a ccw soon, and am leaning toward one of these:

Springfield XD sub compact .40 or 9mm

Smith & Wesson M&P compact .357 Sig

I like the S&W because of the lifetime service plan.

What do ya'll think...any suggestions?

Smith

Smith M&P is a great weapon and you can adjust the backstrap, can't do that with the Springfield!:neener:

Most major firearms makers offer a lifetime warranty on thier products. With that stated I have an XD and have only had the following problems: I can't afford to shoot it as often as I would like.:)

Go with a Glock. There the Honda of the gun world. Good reliability and wide aftermarket. Your other choices are similar, which is the reason I mention it. I prefer metal guns, its a fact, but when it comes to plastic I'll only buy Glock.

I won't cast a vote since I've never shot the Smith, however I have quite a few rounds through an XD and can't think of anything too bad to say about it. I've heard mostly praise about the M&P too so I say go with whatever feels best or whichever you shoot best.

Glock?

Now if it's between a Glock and an XD...go with the Glock! I have owed the XD but it was not a Glock in quality (here comes the flames!:neener:). Now between a Smith and a Glock...that's a darn hard choice, but if you have small hands, the Smith will win in the "feel and fit" dept.
Yes, many manufacturers provide a "lifetime warranty"...but...some of them make you use it more than you need to (I won't give names unless you write me privately). "Testing and Evaluation through the use of a Warranty" is not my idea of customer service. It seems some of these manufacturers put out products not ready to market (ie: with "bugs") and they use their "lifetime warranty" to let you find them, and return them. Can you say "guinea pig"? Sorry, but I need a dependable gun, not something that works only part of the time! I have had great service out of my Smiths and Glocks and depend on each daily.

Between those two, the Smith. The XD looks great in the magazines and all but when you see one and hold one in person, it is a little too big or bulky for my tastes. My choice would be neither one. But you are not asking for my choice.

The S&W .357. You can practice with cheaper and lighter .38 spl loads and then load it for SD with .357 or .38 spl +P loads as long as they're 120gr. or more. Light. Small. Easy to conceal and carry all day long. The natural curves of a revolver are easier to disquise in a pocket or under a shirt than are blockier "L" frames like the XD. All this IMO.

I wouldn't get the .357 SIG because the cost and availability of the ammo. The 9mm in a compact model will be the easiest recoil-wise to shoot and cheapest if you plan on practicing a lot. I think the M&P might be a just little bit easier to conceal than the XD but I wouldn't say one is any better than the other. Get whichever one fits your hand best. I like them both better than Glock. Oh, and Springfield has a lifetime warranty also and they are getting better at shipping out parts lately for self-repair if requested (I have a feeling a Glock fan will mention that). Good choices!

I like my S&W M&P 9 Compact. Recoil is just about non-existant - so much so that it was my wife's first gun to shoot and she really liked it.

The .357 is pretty scarce in the M&P compact version. Could have gone with the 40 - but for me I want enough range time in on my CC weapon that I don't end up missing my target - and the cheaper 9mm ammo fits that bill. A good defensive 9mm load will do the job - and if the first one doesn't, the other 11 will.

XD is good too, I like the grip safety and wish the M&P had that. HOwver, the ergonomics on the M&P is great.

Also, S&W is running a special starting in June that gives you 4 mags in total (two with the gun - two by mail) whenever you purchase an M&P.

I owned a G17 and then a G27. My main problem was the tendency of both to recoil (twist) to the right after each round. I tried an XD45 GAP tactical and liked it so much, I got the XD40 4" as my cc gun. I've never had a single jamb in either one. One caveat though, XD 9, 40, and 45 use the same clip, so mark you clips if you have more than one XD

Glock 26, been carrying one for 7 years. Accurate reliable, and magazines are availible in 10,15,17, and 33 rounds for zombie attacks:).

Can you find a range where you can rent all three in cluding the G26 and shoot them. That would be he best thing to do rather than asking us folks.

The XD SC is fantastic! I have it in 9mm, my buddy has it in .40. Both are great. You won't regret it.

I'd go with the one you shoot better.
I'm assuming you have shot both?? If not, do so - you might not like or shoot either one real well. Don't limit yourself to only two choices, give some others a try before you decide :)

Why are you considering a .40 S&W or 9mm in the Springfield and the .357 Sig in the M&P? I would think you would be open to the same calibers in both. I think you will like the S&W M&P much better than the XD but I don't think you should buy it in .357 Sig, only because of the cost and availability of the ammo.

The M&P feels approximately 1000 times better in my hand than the XD.

You should try to find them at the same place so you can compare them well. That's what I did before I bought my M&P. The measurements on the net say it is bigger but in real life it feels smaller because the edges are rounded. It also has a lower bore axis which helps felt recoil.

The only thing I like better about the XD is the grip safety. But then again that's just more parts to break.

My motto is find the one that feels right in your hand (much easier to decide when they are next to each other). Everything else can be fixed or dealt with.

Also the M&P is made in America unlike the XD. You can order parts for your M&P, the XD has to go back to Springfield. Check my other posts for more M&P endorsements. :)

M&P40 Compact

I own a number of guns. My favorite carry gun is S&W's M&P40c. It is light weight yet felt recoil is very managable. With the replacable back straps it fits most shooters hands really well. It has a life time warrenty to boot.

Jomax: He meant 357 sig, the semiauto load, not .357 mag.

Ooops! So he did. Thanks for pointing that out, Nitrogen. Well, in that case, I would go with the more vanilla XD and save $$$ on the ammo going forward.

i have a m&p compact in 9mm and it shoots great, never a problem with ftf/fte and 9mm ammo is still reasonable...

...it alternates with a 229 in .40 as carry gun...but its heaver than the m&p compact by quite a bit...

...had a glock 32 in .357 sig...i found that .357 sig ammo is sky high...

...of those listed, i'd opt for the m&p in 9mm but either will be a great gun for carry purposes...:)
