And other inquires we receive; we are looking for less recoiling shotgun recipes for kids.
These loadings compiled would be great for youth, teenagers, new shooters, physically limited, and elderly as well.

For instance a young man or lady using a 20 gauge may need a less recoiling 7/8 oz loading, and there are some nice ¾ ounce loadings with less felt recoil as well.

Keep in mind these guns may be Youth and Adult sizes : Single Shot , SxS, O/U, Bolt, Pump and Semi- Auto.
The Semi-Auto recipes need to include the type of gun used and known to work in as a reference.

12, 16, 20, 28, 24, 32, gauge and .410

List gauge, gun(s) used in, and comments.

Dave, feel free to edit title if you can think of something better that might make searches easier, and this post to assist in clarification, and disclaimer I post.

Thanks,

Steve

Great idea, Steve. Another reason to treasure your presence here.

I do not have a 20 gauge recipe, but here's the one I set up for Son's debut in 12 gauge and has been used for a couple kids since.

12 Gauge 3/4 oz load....

Remington STS hull.

Winchester 209 primer.

16 gr of Clays.

WAA12SL wad or CB clone.

3/4 oz of hard 8.5 shot.

35-40 lbs wad pressure.

If the crimp is dished too much one can add a 28 gauge nitro card wad at the bottom of the shot cup or similar.

I'm loading up a box of these to try out in my B gun Friday. If they'll set the inertia trigger for the second shot I may use them this summer for informal trap and so on.

Fiocchi sells an extremely low recoil 2-3/4", 20GA, #7-1/2, 3/4oz, 1050fps round.

They call it their "20Lite". My 9-year-old son can shoot these all day with no problem.

On a side note, these don't have enough "oomph" to cycle any autoloader I have tried them in....

Clay Cartridge

Sm,
For those who don't have time to reload[ and have the $$$ to by in bulk ], Clay Cartridge Company is introducing a new super low recoil 12 ga load......24 gram [7/8 oz. ] @ 1200 fps. This should be a great training/practice/ladies/kids/smart people who don't want to be beat up load;)

I've been shooting this brand of shell for about 6 years now, and I've been very pleased. They ship the shells to your door, included in the price on orders of 25 or more cases[flats].

www.claycartridge.com

The word is that they will be availible within a month or so.......

BTW, I'm heading out for the NSCA US Open tomorrow morning early, so I hope to see Dave McCraken there, since its in his backyard. Its a 9 hour drive for my wife and I:rolleyes:

The shoot is @ Hopkins Game Farm and Sporting Clays in Kennedyville, Md.

Thanks for input everyone.

Will, good luck to you and the wife, have fun.

Dave, or any Staff, Perhaps change title from "Recipes" to "Loadings" or "Shells for Younger shooters" or something better .

My fault, I forgot about some of the Factory lighter loadings .

Still having one thread with Less recoil loads, factory or reloads, in Shotgun sub-forum was my idea.

Thinking being, a kid, youth, or someone with kids/youth would be looking in Shotguns for less recoiling ideas.

Help...

Steve,
Great idea.

I will repost mine in case somebody doesn't want to read the earlier post:

Good 7/8 oz load in a 20:

Remington 20 gauge RTL hull (or similar)
Win 209 primer
22.3 grains of Hodgden LONGSHOT
WAA20 wad
7/8 oz shot

1300 fps. Only develops 7,500 psi and takes a good bit of time doing it.

Sorry, Will, duty calls. Hopefully there will be some available time by next year.
Son's last semester starts in Sept.

Thanks for the info on Clay Cartridges.

I'm normally loathe to publish or use reloading recipes unless from manufacturer's websites or manuals, but I'll post these along with links to manufacturers sites (please check those sites before loading any of these recipes and always use a scale to double check your powder drops): (all these work in a Mossberg 500 Bantam in 20ga and a Stoeger 20ga Condor O/U ;))

Hers what my daughter started with a couple of years ago when she was 10 years old.
Trap:
Remington Hull (Peters, STS, Gun Club)
Rem. 209P
12.5 Green Dot
Rem. RXP20
7/8 oz shot #8
1,050FPS @ 9,230 PSI

Skeet: (its a little slow, but easy on the shoulder)
Remington Hull
Rem. 209P
14.5 Green Dot
Rem. RXP20 14.5
7/8 oz #9 shot
1,150FPS at 10,850 PSI

Now that she's 13, she can handle loads that move a tad quicker, but are still fairly light.

Trap recipes:
Remington Hull (STS, Peters, Gun Club)
Rem 209P Primer
16.5 grains Unique
Orange Duster wad (can substitute WAA20)
7/8 oz #8 shot
1155 FPS at 7700 PSI

Winchester AA hull (no other Winchester hulls can by used as subsititutes)
Win 209 primer
15.0 grains Unique
Orange Duster wad (or WAA20)
7/8 oz shot
1155 FPS @ 9800 PSI

Federal Hull (These need lots of crimp pressure, as Federal and Estate hulls hulls don't want to hold their crimps)
Fed. 209
14.5 Green Dot
Orange Duster (or WAA20)
7/8 oz #8 shot
1,155 FPS at 9,700 PSI

For Skeet:
Remington Hull
Rem 209P STS primer
17.5 grains Unique
Orange Duster (or WAA20)
7/8 oz #9 shot
1200 FPS at 8100 PSI

Winchester AA
Win 209 primer
16.0 grains Unique
Orange Duster (or WAA20)
7/8 oz #9 shot
1200 FPS at 10500 PSI

Alliant Powder Reloading webpage: http://www.alliantpowder.com/reloaders/Index.htm

Hodgdon's Webpage (not as user friendly as it used to be) http://data.hodgdon.com/main_menu.asp They also have 13 recipes for Remington hulls and 20 recipes for Winchester AA hulls using their International Powder and 3/4 oz shot. Just enter 1) 20 ga, 2) lead shot, 3) 3/4 oz, 4) Remington and then Winchester hulls. If you want to get it to print all the recipes for each hull on one page you'll have fiddle around with your printer settings (at least I had to, YMMV). They also have "youth loads" listed using International:
http://www.hodgdon.com/data/youth/20wincompaa.php
and
http://www.hodgdon.com/data/youth/20remrxpsts.php

I like Nothing But Dust (aka Duster Wads) as they leave less plastic residue then OEM or Claybuster wads in the barrels/chokes, they use the same data as WAA20 and are cheaper. http://www.dusterwads.com/

I have binders setup for each powder manufacturer and then tabs by gauge and the by powder. I also have a seperate binder of http://www.shotgunworld.com/SGWLoadData.pdf forms that I use to keep track of what I and my daughter thought various loads. I cross out the "Dram Equil." column heading and write in "Bushing #". But always use a scale to verify powder drops.

This is great information....but for those of us just getting started into "shot gunning" I was wondering if someone could make a list or chart for what size shot/loads to use for each activity, like skeet or trap, doves, quail, ducks.... and so on. Also what size and brands already loaded for those folks who don't reload.

Just an idea.

Smitty, what do you guys shoot with these shells? Target practice or hunting? Does anyone know if this would be a suitable dove load?

Fiocchi *20Lite* Ultra Low Recoil

20ga.
2 3/4"
Dram=Lite
1075fps
3/4oz.
# 7 1/2
Hi-Antimony Lead

*20 Lite not designed to function semi-autos.

ROSCO,
Fiocchi *20Lite* Ultra Low Recoil loads will break skeet targets all day long out of single shot, Pump gun, O/U, SxS and one at a time out of a semi, as they will not cycle a 1100, 1400, 303, or 390.

These loads not only fell clays at skeet, also a portable thrower.
Dove and quail, squirrels and rabbits too.

I "prefer" #6 and #5 shot for rabbits, still this load of Hi-Antimony Lead ( hard shot) patterns real well, seems to have a short shot string from what I can tell shooting moving targets so if the rabbit is near, it will be down clean and ethically.

They do real well out of a H&R Topper Youth 20 ga single shot, with fixed modified choke.
Mine has the factory recoil pad, and what a mild load it is...

I'm the big kid using a single shot ...:p

Thanks Smitty, I'll get a few boxes of the Fiocchi 20 Lite Ultra Low Recoil.

That link was exactly the info I was looking for. I guess I've seen that on a box of shells before:confused: oops!

Smitty, I had to order the Fiocchi 20-Lite Ultra Low Recoil shells. I went to the nearest sporting goods store and they said they were making an order to Fiocchi on Monday. He said it could be 3-4 weeks! I went for it, ordered a case for +/- $50. I can't wait!! I'm more excited than my son is.

I called the sporting goods store yesterday to see if they were in yet. They said they would call me back later that they just recieved an order from Fiocchi. Sure enough, they called me back two hours later to tell me they had them. I've been too busy to get them. Most likely I'll get them tomorrow.

I'll post after we shoot.

Great thread, Steve!!!!!!

Here's a load that I've used for many years.
It not only is easy on the shoulder, it patterns extremely well, and will cycle my Remington 1100(s) all day long.

12 Gauge
Winchester AA or Remington STS will work as well. Also Peters "Blue Magic" hulls (IF you still have any! Fortunately, I have almost 1/2 barrel of 'em left!)
Claybuster wads or Winchester WAA12 (white)
18.0 gr. Alliant (Hercules) Red Dot
CCI 209 primer
1-1/8 oz #7-1/2 HARD shot (Also patterns well with #5 HARD shot for pheasant)

In my 1100, this feels like a light 20 ga.
