As many others have said, alcohol and firearms do not mix. This is one of the reasons why I choose not to drink, or hang around people who are drinking. Impaired judgments get people killed. Not just around firearms, either. Cars, heavy machinery, etc.

Tex, there used to be school sponsored shooting events at GMI.

Doc James E.A. John put a stop to that.

It used to be a rush event at Theta Xi as well (skeet/clays/firearms for newbies), but he made us take it off the rush calendar in 99 or 00 IIRC.

Your post says "he was killed by a gun". No he wasn't - he was killed by another person.

I'm for everything these guys are for, yet they still lay off and read the thread like the disclaimer says. We're on the same freakin' side, yet they still insist on treating me like I know nothing about firearms.

That's a sad situation. That happened several years ago to a friend of mine. From what I understand, they were playing with a handgun he had unloaded the gun and stashed the magazine under a chair or something. He left the room and his friend re-loaded the gun and set it down and forgot to tell my friend. The rest is history.

He's still ****ed up about it to this day :(

Guns and alcohol...

We all know that mixing them is an avenue for tragedy. But then, so is mixing guns and college-level idiots...

Just so y'all know, I earned a BS from Virigina Tech in 1988. So don't be givin' me any grief about college kids. I saw 'em aplenty there and I understand how dumb they can be. It seems people just don't think before they do something anymore. To we gun users, it's second nature to assume every gun is loaded when we pick it up if we've never seen that gun before, or have no immediate knowledge of who has handled it in the last few minutes. At least, that is my nature. I always assume someone else has screwed-up or fell down in some aspect of responsibilty when I handle any gun for the first time that day. So I verify. One split second of irresponsibilty, carelessnes or stupidity can yield a lifetime of regret...

My condolences, Tex...

Tex:

How you doing today? I've been keeping you and your friends in my prayers. Forget about the criticisms in the thread. You have an important message here, and people need to focus on the spirit of the thread, not the technicalities. Besides, there is something to be said for free speech, and to be able to say it how you choose.

I have lost several friends in accidents, auto, firearms, and worst of all dynamite into fireworks, etc. In fact, it was 28 years ago today that I lost a very dear friend. She was sleep ona hide-a-bed in the barn, while herboyfriend was making M80s by cutting and old sticks of dynamite, then poking a fuse into the pieces. She, unlike your friend's friend, did not die immediately. She lingered for about 3 hours, suffering. So, I know that this whole matter is overhwelming. Be strong! Feel free to use that PM if you need.

Hi
I am sorry for your friends loss .
And for the family and friends .

When I first read it I thought the same thing as most the gun didn't do it.
You are just grieving know and not the best choice of words .
Wasn't going to say anything about it .
The way this world is so Anti-gun you can not blame
anyone on a Gun Forum for being a little upset over the wording .

Everyone here I am sure is Sorry about this terrible accident .

Bill

The Flint Journal
A funeral service will be held Friday for a Kettering University student who police say was accidentally shot and killed by a fraternity brother.

Karl J. Hansen, 21, of Pinckney was sleeping during a party in Auburn Hills on Saturday when he was shot in the head.

Police charged Marcus Jun-Mon Yu, 22, of South Lyon with the shooting.

Hansen and Yu were engineering students at Kettering and belonged to Pi Kappa Alpha, a fraternity on Linden Road in Flint Township.

Police said Yu was playing with a handgun about 2:30 a.m. when it discharged.

"This is a terrible tragedy between two close friends, college classmates," Auburn Hills police Lt. James Manning said.

The Detroit News
ROCHESTER HILLS -- A weekend party among college fraternity brothers in Auburn Hills turned tragic, leaving one man dead in an accidental shooting and a 22-year-old South Lyon man facing charges.

Police charged Marcus Jun-Mon Yu on Monday with involuntary manslaughter in the 2:30 a.m. Saturday death of Karl Joseph Hansen, 21, of Pinckney, a fellow engineering student at Kettering University in Flint and fellow member of the Pi Kappa Alpha fraternity.

"He (Yu) was playing with a handgun in a bedroom and it went off, striking the victim," said Auburn Hills Police Lt. James Manning.

Hansen, asleep at the time, died of a single gunshot wound to the head, police said. The men were close friends and families of both have requested privacy.

+1 to Tex for not changing the message

-1 to people who have too much time on their hands

Man, that really bites. Up here in the ELCO school district I don't think we've had idiots who shot people accidentally, mostly its just people that get drunk or high and try to drive.

There was one pretty pathetic case though. A few years back one of the students tried to rob a Wendy's with a bb gun, but no one knew what it was at the time. The cops responded and the kid storms out and points the gun towards the cops, who of course open fire and kill him. It really sucked but then people had the audacity to blame the cops for doing what they're trained to do.

+1 to Tex for not changing his post

+1 to people who know that people kill people

+1 to saying what YOU think whichever side of whatever fence you are on

+1 to not being too stubborn to change your mind once in a while

Wow doc i've heard that target sports isn't that great of a place, but now you have me convinced. Have you tried Double Action? i have had nothing but positive experiences with the place. My only gripe is the cost of renting a firearm, but thats not their fault, i just want to rent like a dozen or so at once:)

Doc2005 Quote:I packed my bag, left and never returned for use the remainder of my membership. Since then, I have never returned. So, idiots are everywhere. Target has lost a very good customer...a very good customer!

That is all you did? No call to let management know they have a moron working for them? I am not one for complaining about service but this was a moment I would have lost it and made sure that would not happen to anyone else! You have more restraint than myself.

Sorry about your friend's loss. I hope that with time he can move on.

This only goes to show how important it is to keep weapons and mind-altering intoxicants far apart.

Re: report it to the manager, I could never prove that the employee did it. You KNOW the owner would side with the employee if for no other reason than legal liability. I don't know if the store videos caught it or not. I felt the best thing to do was simply leave.

Yes, to Double Action. that is where I now have membership and buy my firearms, etc. Double Actions seems pretty darned professional.

Gun Safety Classes

Tying to get my head around the idea of someone "playing" with a loaded pistol.

"Hey, I wonder what this lever does?"

!BANG!

***?? It was loaded? It was loaded?? It was freakin' LOADED???

OMG! Help!

"Playing" with a pistol. Playing?

No, we would never want to make people take a class on gun safety. That might seem to imply that we somehow endorse guns. Car safety? Yeah, sure; everybody owns cars, and we're okay with that. We wouldn't want to encourage people to become involved with guns. So, no, we won't be doing gun safety classes.

After all, look at this guy. Isn't it horrible how he was killed by a gun?

Playing??? With a loaded pistol?

"Hey, I'm an engineering student! I know machines. Here's a machine I've never seen before, but I'll bet I can figure it out . . ."

!BANG!

College student. College of Engineering. Above average intelligence. I think.

Above average intelligence.

Playing. With a loaded pistol.

Gawd.

I just can't get my head around that.
