Over the yeers I've learned to be very forgiving of spelling and grammatical errors. Two of the smartest people I no are awful in spelling and grammar. (And know, I'm not one of them.)

I usually have to recite some of these to get them right myself:

Common one's:

"Gauge" is spelled alphabetically: a, e, i, o, u.

"Site" is the place where something is, like the THR site.

"Sight" is the set of things or thing you look at when you're aligning the barrel of the gun. Or the device which projects a laser dot.

"It's" is only used when it is.

"Its," oddly, is used when it owns something.

There is "a rat" in "separate."

There is an "EEE!" in the cEmEtEry.

The second "a" follows the same rules as the first "a" in grammar.

These are the ones I could think of rite off the bat.

And yes, I feel this is gun-, or at least site- related since so many "exchanges" are due to eroneous english and it's correctors.

Any other helpful little rules you can contribute?

My favorite one is "Spellcheck is your friend."

I catch typographical errors and misspelled words all the time in my posts. I do think that it is important to make an effort in your writing, but I don't get as bent out of shape over a misspelled word as much as I do "d00d speak." That's just me. "Ur is not your." "U" is a vowel, not a pronoun.

Again, that's just me. If I wouldn't write it in a professional document, I do not want it reflecting on me here. Because I usually type on the fly, I can accept if I accidently spell "Their" as "Thier" and will usually change something like that if I catch it on a re-read.

I may hav not bin lurned me werds gude, butt I've bin lurned on me gunz gude

Gee, 1st one to say something gun related.

Instead of trying to change or "re-educate" others, try concentrating on taking the High Road.

I have worked with a guy who's literary skills have trouble reading the alphabet, but, he has forgotten more about firearms, reloading, and smithing than I ever hope to learn.

Some people have nothing better to do. Stick to the SHTF cyborg mutant ninja biker zombie threads.

Or provide links to the "exchanges" that have occurred due to the grammar and spelling errors.

one thing that bothers me, and I see this on bladeforums more often, and it's even less excusable there, is writing "knifes" or "knive." The word is "knife," and the plural is "knives."

Some of the rules for grammar really don't work for everything. For instance the old "I before E, except after C!" does not apply in words such as "freight", "neighbor", etc...

Then the rule "When two vowels go walking, the first does the talking!" Tell that to the folks in "Phoenix"!

"I before E except after C, or when sounding like A as in neighbor and weigh."

But the rest of the rule states that.

The one that more often kills me the most is: becuase.

Thanks! It has been a LONG time since I read a thread that wasn't a "which gun is better" or "which caliber" thread and I don't think I've read one re: grammar on THR -- EVER :scrutiny:
One rool you haven't mentioned is the " 'i' before 'e'" rool ;) Or maybe 'if you have nothing good to say, say nothing at all";)

Your beating you're head against a rock. I wouldn't loose any sleep over the lose way folks write. They're just isn't any way their going to change there ways.:)

Thanks! Great thread :D It has been a LONG time since I read a thread that wasn't a "which gun is better" or "which caliber" thread and I don't think I've read one re: grammar on THR -- EVER :scrutiny:

Ah, yes, speeling.

"I before E except after C, or when sounding like A as in neighbor and weigh."
Yes, truly, as in weird science.

I took the trouble to install the spell-check plug-in for Opera. It's saved me much embarrassment.

Sometimes my fingers go off and spell something homophonic (like they're when I mean their) or even -- get this -- a synonym to the word I'm trying to use.

My father instructed us in the gentle art of English Language Abuse. The trick is to ensure your audience grasps the humor/irony/Dickensian usage without needing to be told.

And that last little bit can be downright tricky.

Some of my posts go through several editing stages before they get the "submit" button. And some of them take even more time -- like when they're longer than a paragraph or two.

* Sigh *

In my house, you might well hear:
  • Are you addressing I?
  • I believe I can say, without fear of contraception, . . .
  • Grammar is important -- at least to Grampa.
  • You was saying?
  • I can do that gooder than him.
  • You needs to watch yer pronounciation.
I will deliberately pronounce silent letters (k-nife) and place emphasis on the wrong syllable.

Occasionally, I will write the way I speak. I try to confine that kind of stuff to literate audiences.

They ain't nuthin' so 'mbarrassin' as tryna look smart in public and rite nonsence.

I imagine people from Brady with yellow pads and sharp pencils looking over my posts, going "here's another pro-gun idiot; look how this moron writes."

Then there's that bit about setting a good example. Shouldn't bother me, but it does.

Spell check doesn't always catch everything, especially when a properly spelled word is misused. (e.g.: their/there). My pet peeve is the misuse of the determiner "a" and "an". It seems as if "an" has become obsolete. I hear it a LOT in the news media reports.

"Texting" grammar and spelling are the latest to get my attention. If someone is too lazy to spell words out I am too lazy to answer.

By the way, are grammar checking plug-ins (or is it plugs-in?) available to catch 'their' vs 'there', 'than' vs 'then' et al?

"Alot" is not a word. So many people use "alot" for "a lot" on the forums I visit. That is one that really bugs me.
