And our Govt. bureaucrats say assault rifles have no sporting purpose.

Pensioner Paul Lienin, aged 100, looks through the scope of his rifle as he takes part in a shooting competition during the 23rd Swiss town guards festival for veterans in Reidbach near Berne July 24, 2007. The five-day festival is held every three years for ex-Swiss Army members

Edited to add: Interestingly I see no scope on his rifle. He's shooting a service rifle with standard aperture sights.

As an aside, are the SIG 550s used by men like Lienin fully auto or are they rendered semi-auto?

Last I heard you keep a select fire until you leave or hit manditory retirement age. Then it is rendered semi-auto if you wish to keep it. You need to have a special collector's license to own auto or select fire weapons as a civilian.

Mind you, it's been four years since I last worked with the Swiss Army, so it might have changed since then.
