Armed America Photo Book

Talked to my mother again at lunch, she told me a coworker at her work at the car dealership also had the book "Armed America", wonder if he tried showing her pictures.

Hey ilcylic very cool - tell us about your experience with the author and crew... Feel free to let us know what page to look for you on :)

What I meant was in a kidding way, was how did the author find all his subjects?

No problem. The author put out the word that he was doing this. The news circulated around gun forums. People who were interested called him. I bet if you search your favorite gun forums you might find some old threads about it.

It was just Kyle and a friend of his. He posts a lot on Live Journal. Sort of Oleg style stuff. So I could tell he was either really into guns, or this was a very elaborate scheme to take bad-press photos of gun owners. ;)

Anyway, so he said he was making a Southwestern tour of the US, and I volunteered to let him take pics of me, and to find him some friends to take pics of as well. He was a really nice guy, he didn't put any sort of pressure on me to act a certain way, or pose a certain way, save for lighting issues. He was clearly a part of the gun culture. Very interested in all of the guns I had, talking with me about them, and again talking with my other friends who posed for him about their guns too.

I'm not sure what page I'm on. I don't have a copy of the book. :) I just got a new job, and the paychecks haven't started coming in yet. But one of my friends here in town said that he, our friend K., and I are all in there.

I think they were lesbians, one had a pink pistol shirt on.

That would be Gwen. She is the communications director for PinkPistols.

It was nice to see the NW represented.
"progressives" love people control.

Not to be a jerk or anything. but *I* am a progressive, and several folks in this book identify as "left of the current administration" or flat out "LeftWing"

One of the things I liked about this book was the inclusion of folks who weren't what you would consider a typical "gun owner." In other words, this book, destroyed the myth of the gunowner as a suburban lower-middle class white male or a poor black male.

In truth, gun ownership crosses many lines: economic, social, gender, sexual and geographic. We *can* be a forced to reckon with, but we need to accept all of the "others" -- others that aren't just like us, and instead embrace the common cause we all want: freedom.

Ok...add "idealist" to "progressive".

;-)

Eh, skeptical on this one. I get the impression the photographer is 'outing' people with firearms in a similar way as a documentary would portray gay people as everyday individuals, or similar. I don't like to be labeled as a 'firearm owner'.

"See, he's a white supremicist but looks just like anyone else and has a wife and kids" etc.

Don't be offended, maybe you'll understand what I'm trying to get at...

Seems like a cool book to me. People can see that all sorts of people are gun owners and we aren't all the stereotyped gun owner. Anyone know if its available in book stores or just online?

I paged through it at a local bookstore, and I didn't think it was worth the asking price, or even half the price. As far as I'm concerned, there is nothing new there. I think most of us know that gun owners come from all across the spectrum, and that they own all sorts of guns. The pictures reinforce that, but as I said, they bring nothing new to the discussion.

I'd rather spend the money on ammo.

Good news, the book is featured on the frontpage on msn.com, it's in their rotating banner so you might have to click "next" or wait about 10 seconds for it to appear.

If you click this link: http://www.msnbc.msn.com/id/20178856/site/newsweek/?GT1=10252 it will show you 13 pictures and each picture has a "audio file" that plays for each picture with the person explaining why they have guns. Pretty good exposure for gun owners and the book.

Sidenote: perfect reviews on amazon.

We know that, but a good many people don't. People honestly have laughed in my face when I tell them there are blacks, left wing nuts, and even queers who own guns because I'm none of those things.

As a straight Protestant white male, I am the villain in the eyes of many people who don't share my race, religion, color, or sexual orientation and yet I have to coexist with these people and try to educate them. This book is a tool to that end.
