Hey Guys,
I live in NY was wondering if anyone hunts eastern coyotes. I primarily hunt them at night, and was wondering if any has had positive experiences hunting them during the day?

I know people who are big into hunting coyotes in western ny, but they use dogs. If you're trying to call them in, most people do that at night like you do.

I hunt them in the early morning or evening with success. They are active and it removes the limitations of range caused by filtered light, etc.

I live in a county of half million. I live next to a large forested area that connects to wilderness. I can hear the coyotes 3 or 4 nights every week. Too bad we cant hunt them here, against city/county ordinances. Question is: I am unfamiliar with coyotes, how old is that one pictured and what is its size/length and weight? Doesnt look any larger than a big house cat.

I have a couple of videos by Byron South. One is Hunting in the Thick Stuff and it's centered on eastern coyotes. All shooting is done in daylight and there's a lot of it. I'd suggest getting a copy. Lots of good info. Best rifles, how to set up, suggested locations, etc.

Redneck.... I appreciate the heads up on the videos! I will definitely be checking them out. I do hunt them in the late evening, however by the time I get them in it is dark :(

I got my rifle already:

Although coyote hunters seem to dislike the .223's for shooting, I have been nothing but pleased with this gun. It is a tack driver.

Indiana, what gun is that model 70? also how do you get your pics to appear right in the thread?

Folks: My friends and I intended hunting the coyote at night
on a hunch I contacted our Wild Life Resource Center

The kindly Lady said: Craig [my name] YOU will be arrested for hunting COYOTE at night.

Yes Mam: But they are primarily nocturnal. Kindly Lady: Yes you are correct:

BUT you will only hunt them during day-light hours.

I've chased the coon/possum at night for years, and now should the dogs get on a Coyote: oh well;

I would like to hear your stories: 'vicarious' entertainment

In NY it is legal to hunt coyotes at night :) It is even legal to use a spot light... I however do not use a spot light.

the coyote pictured is probably a western coyote, which are much smaller. Eastern Coyotes were actually shown in some research I saw once to be some sort of hybrid related to some canadian red wolf or some such thing. There was a local taxidermist here a few years back that had two males in at once that were around 80 lbs, though probably 65-75 lbs would be more average.

We have tons around where I am, to the point where I wouldn't leave a dog tied out if I were so inclined, and I have a husky/shepherd mix. A guy down the street from my parents had his lab killed by coyotes, and came home one night to them circling his other dog's doghouse with it holed up inside. He had to retrieve a rifle and shoot one before they'd leave! He did say that they left his two pet wolves alone, though, but the male of those is one big fella.
