As a handloader I don't really care. But I noticed while perusing the sporting goods dpt at wally world that 308 ammo is almost $5 per box more expensive than the same brand 30-06 ammo. What in the world is up with that?
I second the supply and demand comment. The civilian market is competing with the government/military market for 308. Also, I've noticed that the 308 seems to have grown more popular in civilian circles than 30-06.
.308/7.62 Nato is a military round and in high demand during wartime, conflicts, and even military buildups. It is possible that the premium over 30-06 would drop during peacetime, but I don't expect it to go negative. Whenever the expected performance is the same, the components for .308 are more expensive. .308 needs a more efficient powder to equal average 30-06 ballistics. Even high-velocity 30-06 can be made with a large enough variety of rifle powders for cartridge manufacturers to chose based on price.
