not on your list but I am partial to hump follower MatalForms in 7 round variety and Tripp Research CobraMags...I have to admit to never having a feed problem using original Chip McCormack shooting star mags (came with the Kimber)...

I have 7 round Wilsons (47OXCB) for my CDP Pro with their extended aluminum base plate (47BAN) since I have a Magwell on my CDP. (Same magwell Kimber puts on the Tactical Pro)

For full size guns I have had good luck with 7 or 8 round Wilsons, 8 round McCormicks, and Kimber Pro-Tac Mags.
Some guns are finicky with the 8 rounders.

I don't really care why, I just know they work.

Yep, that's the first and foremost important consideration, when it comes right down to it, isn't it? ;)

If a good quality magazine exhibits proper functioning in a particular owner's pistol(s), in their hands, using their ammunition selection(s), in the circumstances and conditions in which they use their pistol(s) ... then it's not really something that 'needs fixing', is it?

Individual choice of equipment and maintenance practices which result in consistent good functioning tend to promote confidence, which is arguably an important consideration.

My personal decision to no longer use Wilson magazines, for example, is just that ... my personal decision. It should certainly not reflect adversely upon those folks who use prefer to use them, and have had satisfactory experiences when using them. Experiences can vary, though. I used Wilson magazines for a number of years. Remember when the magazine bodies had unequal length rails for the bases? The ball detent in the top of the follower? I've also used the newer production versions, as well, including the 7 & 8 rd Govt/Comm and the 7 rd OM magazines.

I have occasion to talk to a fair number of other LE firearms instructors, LE armorers, manufacturers, factory technicians, vendors, gunsmiths and individual owners. Lots of different experiences. It's always going to be possible to find folks who have had different experiences and have accordingly developed opposing preferences in such subjects. Normal.

I'm still waiting for someone to produce a 1911-type magazine which offers consistent performance similar to the monotonously boring feeding and functioning performance of the S&W 45XX series 8 rd .45 ACP magazines, though. ;) Okay, okay, I realize the pistol has something to do with it, too. :neener:

I do seem to have the fewest malfunctions in my SIG GSR (the second one) with the Wilson 47Ds. A "Chip" (McCormick) 8-round is the one that spits out the next to last or last round, which is what intrigued me about this dimple business.

Hands down for me are Tripp Cobra mags, longer tube, heavier spring.

I was a big Wilson fan, but after a few years the springs crapped out and they wouldn’t go to slide lock.

Ive had great results with Para Ordnance factory 7 round magazines. They fit well and drop free. Also have had decent luck with cheap surplus 7 rounders. One word of advice, take your pistol with you and check each one before you buy. Make sure each one fits and locks in properly. And above all, will drop free when you push the magazine release. Then check when you get home for proper feeding.

I found this link which shows a number of different 1911-type followers. Didn't read it. Don't know what it's about or who wrote it. I only chose to link it because the first image is the dimpled Colt follower I mentioned. I didn't feel it was proper to just use the image without linking to the article without the author's permission.

Much appreciated! I wrote that article, and a couple people have leeched some of my larger images; not very considerate, given that I pay for the bandwidth used. :fire:

Anyway, in the process of testing all those mags, I found out why Wilsons have such a good rep: They bypass most of the feeding process, basically shoving rounds directly into the chamber. If a 1911's feed geometry is off, this will turn a jammer into a reliable gun; in my eyes, though, that's not a fix but a workaround. The Colt hybrid mags I tested fed in a controlled manner, but did so with a smoothness that was head and shoulder above the other mags I tried, so I went with them.

My Kimber is totally agnostic when it comes to mags, it likes them all. I selected cheap 7 rounders and flush 8 rounders, any brand.

Wilson Combat or Chip McCormick: Aware that Chips sometimes dig into alloy frames. Some guns individually run better with one than the other; don't know why. I never had a problem with 8 rds over 7.
Cheers, TF

Inexpensive, 7 round, flush fitting, dimpeled mags work absolutely great in my RIA. No problems ever. Except . . . once, at a gun show, I purchased an inexpensive Colt mag. $15 bucks. At least it was marked Colt. When test fitting it in my pistol, it wouldn't eject! It took two heads and four hands to remove it!

The 8 round Novak mag that came with my pistol has also been trouble free. Maybe it's the pistol?

I just don't see paying $30 or more for a mag.

Chip McCormic SS 8 round flush fitting mags.

They have been through 2 Gunsite classes, Practical pistol shoots, Fighting pistol, and ALOT of other shooting.
