I want to buy a fairly large quantity...500 to a thousand rounds or so of 30.06 for my M1. CMP has some for sale as follows:
NLU 407-CAN - Greek .30-06 ammunition. HXP (Pyrkal) manufacture. Bullet attracts magnet. Boxer primed. Packaged in 8 round clips in bandoleers. 192 rounds per spam can. Price per individual can $50.00. S&H is $8.95 per case. S&H to Alaska or Hawaii is $19.95 per can.[/B]
It is of course surplus ammunition and sold as is. Some corrosion is possible.
CMP is, of course, a reliable organization, but I'm wondering if anyone out there has any experience with this ammo, from CMP or otherwise. Or do you have any opinions on it.
Thanx.

I Like it!

I use HXP in my Garand and it holds the 9 & 10 ring on a SR-1 target at 100 yards from the bench. It has been 100% reliable so far.

Get some! No wait, don't buy any. Leave it all for me...

regards,
LG Roy

THe Greek milsurp M2 with HXP headstamp is good ammo for the M1.... made specifically for it AAMOF.

However.... . the Greek commercial Olympic brand 30-06 ammo is NOT, rpt. NOT OK for use in the M1 rifle. The powder used in it is much too slow (read: high gas port pressure) for the M1's gas system. Gas port pressure is waaayy over the design limit.

As a bonus.... the HXP brass is boxer primed. The Olympic stuff is berdan.

Best to all,

I've fired a bunch of HXP from CMP and it runs great out of any M1 I shoot it from. It also isn't bad at all from my Model 70 boltguns. Bonus is the fact that you can get it already in clips and bandos. Just watch the greek clips as some have reported difficulties reloading them with LC cased 30-06 because of differences in the extractor groove dimensions.

I would buy all you can afford. Orest Michaels was just at the Garand Collectors Assn mtg in KC and said they had several years worth of ammo. It has been my experience that CMP tends to sell out quicker of everything than they predict. I wish I had bought a bunch more of the Danish 30-06 when it was available a few years ago as that remains even more accurate than the HXP in my experience.

Regards,

Bob

The CMP also has 250 round boxes of Lake City for $55. A better deal if you don't need the garand clips.

The Greek is just terrific--it was purpose-made for the M-1--and it shows.

It was obviously made and packaged by people who cared about quality. It is accurate, sometimes a bit dirty but not oddly so, and is likely the 'newest' military ammo for the M-1 that will ever come to market. Buy it on en-blocs.
