Good all round rifle

They are both excellent guns and of course the scout allows the forward mount pistol scope.

Personally I really like the Savage rifles and find them quite a bit more accurate. Savage has an almost endless number of models and variations - therefore I suggest setting aside a half hour to call thier customer service with your written list of priorties and importances.

First read the website or catalog carefully. Then try to narrow down your selection. The AccuTrigger is automatically included on almost all of them but there are many other variations of importance to you. For instance a heavy barrel adds to accuracy for most people but will you want to lug it around. In general, I have found that group size is often on par with or usually smaller than the best of rifles two and three and even four times the cost. There is, for me, a certain snob appeal in having the cheapest, most accurate, most reliable, and least expensive rifle in a line of fine, accurate rifles and shooters!!!

My understanding is that a type of roe deer and kangaroos are about the largest critters you can hunt down there unless the pigs are a feral variety of the domesticated animal.

I would suggest a rifle chambered in .243 Wnchester caliber should suit your needs and be fun to target shoot too if you are still allowed to reload.

My choice would be a Remington 700 or a CZ 527 bolt action in this caliber.

I don't think the accuracy of a 7600 Remington will inspire you and I have very little hands on knowledge of the Steyr though they are supposed to be a fairly decent rifle.

I was just over in Rock Hampton, Queensland for operation Tailsmen Saber. Austraila seems like a great country for hunting. I would go with a .308 for sure regardless of brand of rifle. I have seen how large Kangaroos can get and unless you want to chase after them I'd go with no less than .30 caliber. I think you will find a savage 10fp to be the most accurate choice but it's heavy barrel would be bad for hiking around. I'd go with an upper end model 700 from remington. You can get the 700 in many packages for as low as $500 or over a $1,000 American. Stock 700s have a good combo of accuracy and portability (the offer extra light models) and finding parts or accessories will not be a problem.

My choice would be a Remington 700.

Go with the 7600. They are quick when it comes to follow up shots. They take detachable magazines for quick reloads. Accuracy is about 3cm at 100m. They are chambered in a lot of good calibers. The price is reasonable as well.

I like savage rifles as well. Yes there are better rifles, but for the money I dont know if there is. Just something about them I have always liked.

Remington 700 in 308

I ordered mine 4 days ago and ill get it in 6. I got the SPS because i don't have vary much money right now and im planing on puting a Leopold Rifleman scope on it. Ill have the range review in a week or so.

I would recommend the Rem 7600 in .308 - or even .243 (I have both). I would advise shortening the barrel from 22 to about 18", since neither round benefits much from extra length.

I'll bet money on a stock Remington 7600 against any stock steyr scout. There is a dirty little secret that very few people know, the Remington pump action rifles are probably the most accurate rifle they make today in out of the box form.

A 7600 is just as accurate and in many cases more accurate than a lot of high end bolt action rifles. The reason why is illustrated in the picture below with a 7600 there's literally no possible way to have bedding issues. Now thats a free floated barrel

I get a solid 2MOA average from my 7615 using sights! and let me tell ya I'm by no means a crack shot.
