My buddy just acquired one of these ol guys.

It was used as a training rifle for some branch of the military and still has the original sling.

We had planned on having a range day and were going to bring our respective nephews and teach them how to shoot.

This gun was what we were going to use as it is perfect for that task.

Well while function testing it he discovered the rifle fires when taking the safety off. Thankfully he is a safe shooter and the gun was pointed downrange.

Is there anybody here familiar with this gun? It is probably going to be tagged and put into the safe to be forgotten. He won't spring to have it fixed but if it is a simple procedure of changing a worn fire control piece he would do that.

I can't be sure without seeing the gun, but the condition you describe is usually due to someone trying to do a "trigger job" to lighten the trigger pull. More than likely, replacement of the trigger would fix the gun, but only a gunsmith or someone with knowledge looking at the gun would be able to tell.

You are correct, that is a fine gun for a beginner, and IMHO it would be a shame to just leave it sit. BTW, AFAIK, the 69 was never used as a trainer, although the similar Model 75 was used by some military rifle teams. More than likely some previous owner just put the military sling on because they were cheap.

Thanks for the feedback Jim, I'll pass the info along to him.

He received this and several other unusual pieces in a trade and the military story was passed along to him after the fact.

Go to www.rimfirecentral.com to the Winchester forum.
There is a wealth of information there concerning the win 69a.
I have a parts diagram listed there.
Does your gun have a serial number on the left side below the rear
sight and British proofmarks?

afarmer
