I'm thinking about building my first AR. Based on what I have read so far, it seems as though assembling the lower is pretty simple. The upper, however, requires special tools and skill.

I plan to build more ARs in the future. Is it worth investing in the tools now and build my first upper myself? How much would the tools run? Is it relatively easy at that point?

Also, I don't really have any gunsmithing experience and nobody to assist or train me (not in person anyway, THR is probably better anyway :) )

Here are the tools. You don't need them all.

I use:
E
R
L
and maybe Q if you stay with the standard handguard.
A sturdy bench, big vise a ball peen hammer and a small brass hammer.
The aluminum barrel jaws from Brownells are a big help. They aren't shown here.

If it were me I'd buy the complete lower and complete upper with the bolt carrier and bolt. Then you know how it goes together. Then build your second one from parts.

You might want to consider a tool for pulling the handguards off too...you'll probably need another person if you don't have the tool.

Thanks for the reply.

I already have one that I bought complete. I figure I can refer to it if needed. I must admit, it looks pretty simple at that level.

Yeah...the nub for my bipod mount 'relocated' back into the handguards...had to get my wife to pull the lower piece out while I held the spring back.

Great design...and with the tool it's as simple as Al Sharpton throwing the race card.
