2nd-grader suspended for drawing of gun (merged threads)

Hell, when I was in school I used to draw fairly elaborate stick figure comics involving epic battles with knives, swords, and guns of all shapes and sizes.

I did get suspended once but that was just for calling the principal a Bull**** artist in front of the entire office. :D

If just "drawing" is such a crime, my brother, cousins and I should have all gone to prison for playing cops and robbers when we were 4 to 5 years old. My brother always wanted to play "Matt" and said I had to be "Festis".

Doc, funny you brought that up. New Jersey also suspended 4 kids for playing 'cops and robbers' back in 2000. The kids were using their fingers as 'guns'. Zero tolerance at work.

How do the states and the school districts that tolerate this abuse, justify offering "Hunter Safety"?!

As a teacher and administrator, and the hunter safety instructor, I used to take my actual firearms to school for instruction.

Review the criteria I posted. This is an abuse.

Kaeto, I love satire. That was not satire, if he was being sarcastic, he did a poor job of it.

I did not take his comments any other way than racist. Why mention color, it has noting to do with the subject. I also found the post to be disrespectful of our founding fathers.

unbelievable.

when i was a kid i used to draw tanks and airplanes. i guess i would have been in a federal prison today

The sad part is that the school officials actually force the parents to tell the kids that they did something wrong.Parents need to stand up and tell the school officials how ridiculous their "zero tolerance"policies are. They tell our kids that they need to stand and take a beating if they are attacked or face suspension. The thought police are out in full force screwing up the American children's ability to think a rational thought. We need to be parents and explain that the world is full of nuts and bad people.A lot of them are in positions of authority.Their position does not automatically make them right.

Ok I don't know who Matt and Festus are but that's not the main topic

Actually it is the main point of the thread. Where has our firearms culture and firearms rights gone?! Why can't a kid draw a gun with his pencil, or with his index finger, just the way I did in elementary school?

That aside, highfive, you have succeeded in making me feel genuinely ooooold! Matt was Marshall Dillon. His first deputy was Chester (I think), then named Festus (I think that's the order). Do a search for "Gun Smoke". Here's a link:

http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0047736/

...on the other hand i think that's so pathetic on what they did to the kid for that picture...nonsense

I agree. In all the years I was an administrator I further differentiated between "self-defense" and "fights". Fights I hate. Self-defense...I'm all for it.

Folks: Know Thy School Laws: Zero Tolerance:

The whole matter fails the 3-prong test. Did the child:

No! 1) possess a genuine "weapon"?
No! 2) knowingly bring the "weapon"?
No! 3) bring the "weapon" with intent to do great harm?

You can can "reasonably doubt" any of these, Zero Tolerance is not met!!!!!

As a former public school administrator, I say:

1) Violation of Zero Tol. laws.
2) Violation of child's mandatory education.
3) Violation of free speech & expression.
Excellent point! A drawing of a "gun" is NOT a 'gun'! The word "gun" is NOT a 'gun'. Only an actual GUN is a 'gun'. Anybody who doesn't know the SIGNIFICANT difference between the two, has no business working with children.

Its interesting to note schools that do this to kids are also considering carry permits for columbine kids... Kids are going to see the gun on the teacher, draw it and then get suspended? Kids draw what they see, Just seems so hipocrytical to me.

I don't think they teach Sarcasm at schools any more.

More's the pity, Hairless is a master.

I guess instead of saying "dead white men" I should have been more tactful and referred to them as "cardiac-challenged pale humans of indeterminate sexuality." I don't want to sully my well earned reputation for exquisite sensitivity.

Still doesn't look to me as if there was any racing going on in that picture, unless maybe Burr was using a starter's pistol and just pointed it in the wrong direction. With New Yorkers you just never know. They elected Giuliani and Bloomberg as mayors, Hillary Clinton and Chuck Schumer as senators, and Carolyn McCarthy as a congresswoman. Just goes to show that the race is not always to the swiftest. Oh rats. Did it again. Forget I said race! I meant to say "The jogging is best if done in a non-competitive, mutually supportive manner in which all participants are mindful that we must all finish at the same time."

At any rate, it was Oleg Volk's picture. It's all his fault. ;)

Now what I want to know is whether the history books in that school show pictures of Daniel French's statue of the Minute Person (used to be called the "Minute Man," but I want to be politically correct as usual so as not to upset anyone else):

I expect that the school's Zero Tolerance policy prohibits it, because that guy looks mean. And, besides, look at the way he treated his coat. Anyone who slings a good coat over a plow should get sent to his corner for a few minutes of quiet time. Maybe that's why he looks mean? Could be his mom just appeared and sent him to his room or something else that would harm his self esteem. Kids shouldn't be exposed to such things.

As usual, when this subject is raised, I express my hope that schools with Zero Tolerance policies search students, teachers, and other employees to make sure that the miniature representation of that image on the Massachusetts quarter dollar coin is not smuggled into the building:

The discovery of one would justify calling out the SWAT team. Remember the expression "Show them no quarter"? Now you know the source of it.

I'd be in jail for life if the black choppers came around when I was in elementary school. I drew amphibious tanks with more guns, bullets and missiles bristling off of them than a battleship. I was being imaginative back then (and that was only 15 years ago). I wonder though, in the high schools in the zero-tolerance systems, what happens to soldering guns, glue guns, paint guns in shop class? What did all the wars get fought with in history class? Can students feel "under the gun" around finals time?
I got a note home for a drawing once. In 4th grade I drew a hand extending the single finger salute. That may have been inappropriate in 4th grade, but if I had drawn a hand holding a pistol as well as I drew that bird, my art teacher would've fallen over at my talent.

How do they do that? What is the threat?
