Best 1911 Under $2k?

What are you looking for in features?
I'm going to use the gun in the same fashion as my plastic guns-for fun at the range & concealed carry. This will be a full-size 1911 with night sights. Eyeballing the Kimber Gold Combat II.

Ignore anyone that says Colt is the end all 1911, they are full of it. They are not much to look at with all the tooling marks and sloppy fitting. You can order a Les Baer TRS from John at proload.com for around $1650 shipped. Or you can order one through a shop and call Les and add/remove things from it. I ordered one without the front cocking serrations. A perfect 1911.
$2k!? There are buckets full of good 1911's for that money--hell, you could get TWO good 1911's for that money...
Some people are under the illusion tat you need to spend big bucks on a 1911 to get something accurate and reliable, or that by spending X amount of money it will GUARANTEE one that is reliable and accurate. But the truth is, to some degree it's a crapshoot no matter what, and you mght spend big bucks and get a lemon. I have now and have owned others from several manufacturers that were all good 1911's for under $1k. I have a Springfield Loaded that will shoot one ragged hole groups any time I'm up to it, and two Smith's that are damned close to it, and all have been utterly reliable. I have also owned several other Springer's and still own two Colt's that weren't quite so accurate, but all compared favorably to your average autoloader in accuracy, and were reliable. I personally lean towards those companies--Springer, Smith and maybe Colt. Or you can spend bigger bucks on some of the spendier brands and probably get a nice gun too. But I don't see how they could get any more accurate or reliable than my Springer, and I bought it for a little over $600 brandy new a few years back (think they can still be had for in the $700's somewhere)
I always sort of lusted after a Valtro, though...but of course, you have a loooong wait, and if the maker gets hit by a bus, you're s.o.l. For that money you could get a Professional though, and Springer ain't going out of business any time soon most likely =)

I think some of the responses are very wise. Why spend $2K, when you can spend 1/3 of that and have a bunch left over for ammo, components or a build-it yourself project? After all, the 1911 is a fairly simple gun to customize, and there are many projects that can be done by a garage gunsmith.

I had a SA Pro. Way overpriced for what it delivered. If you want to go that route, you may be better off buying a Rock Island or low-end SA and sending it to a smith for a proper build.
If you don't want to wait the year-plus for the full-custom, I recommend the Ed Brown.

), but since he's now building guns for more critical uses than range queens, the wait is quite a while.
