Winchester 94!!!

I'm in, got mine in '84 on sale at K-mart in Md. for $130.00. Just now found out how good it shoots since I started reloading a few years ago!

I've got one. It's my dad's old deer rifle, probably 1960s vintage or earlier. It's in pristine shape except whoever had it before him decided to carve the stock. They scratched an oval with a diamond inside and stopped there. It looks like they did it with a screwdriver.

It's a shame, but I bet it's the reason he bought it in the first place...always on the look-out for a bargain.

Oh, for a Clean Pre-64

In the back of my mind I always hoped for a nice pre-64.

But now that ALL Win 94's have gone up in price, I'm not sure I'll ever see one at an attractive price. Folks with those rifles generally know what they have and they don't part with them easily... I know I wouldn't.

I've got one my mother bought for my father as an X-mas gift in '57. It still looks new but for a few minor mars from being moved around the case. I shot my first deer with it and it is a fine piece. 30-30 may not be the choice for distance, but puts them down fast and hard in brush country.

I have two, one to shoot and one to stare at. The shooter is a .444 rifle, the other is a Chief Crazy Horse Commerative (1983).

Random 94 question for you all.

At 100 yards, give or take, is there much difference in the real world between a .30-30 and a .44 mag out of a 94 all other things being equal?

I looked at some ballistic graphs and the .30-30 has a bit more energy but not enough to write home about. Is that true in anyones experiance?

I'm thinking to use the rifle for mule deer at one extreem and plinking at the other.

Also how accurate will the 94 be with .44 mags at 100 yards? Group size? How about the .30-30?

Count me in, well, us. Don't know the year (1.6 million ser. no.), but it's an excellent deer-getter in .32 Win Spl.
You purists are probably going to give me tons of grief for this but about 20 years ago, as a Christmas gift to my Dad, I sent the metalwork off to be re-blued and I refinished the stock and fore-end. I've heard that I destroyed it's value yammer yammer etc. I cannot envision the combination of circumstances that would be required for this rifle to ever be sold. It is absolute eye-candy! The only rifle I've ever seen that even comes close might be a Weatherby MkV Lasermark.

94 was my first deer rifle at age 8. u gota love those old lever guns. they are really sumthin special. il never part with mine

1.6 million would be 1949. And yeah, you probably took most of the collector value away when you had it refinished. But, its your gun and you should do with it what you want. It is obviously something that you and your father take great pride in. As a matter of interest, was the gun's metal finish and wood worn from use, abuse or accidental damage? What made you decide to refinish it? On my 1962 the metal was fine and only slightly worn. The wood, however, was attrocious. A previous owner had varnished it with globs of varnish slopped all over (including the metal). I stripped the varnish and refinished the wood with Tru-Oil but left the metal alone.

I don't understand post #6 where reglith said that Marlin doesn't make 30-30s anymore. Marlin makes 30-30s like Ford makes trucks. All day every day.

Diggers, my Marlin 94 in .44mag shoots between 2.5 and 3" groups at 100 yards. But not when i bought it. I kept getting strage flyers in my groups. I remembered an article by John Barsness about the forends on Savage 99s being to tight and causing accuacy problems.

I took my foreend off and slightly releived the wood between the forend cap and the receiver. Now my gun shoots nice round groups at 100 yards.

I have two loads i use. One is 24 grains of Winchester 296 with either a Hornady 240 gr or a Magtech 240 gr for 1800fps and they both shoot to the same point of aim. The other is a Hornady 200 gr with 24 grains of 2400 for 2000 fps. It shoots about 4" higher than the 240 gr load but is the equivilant of the 35 Remington round.

1961 30-30.

Love the gun. Love the iron sights. Love to carry it through the woods. Love to eat venison.

The 30-30 is currently in pieces, going to clean out the crud and a little rust, refinish stock and forearm, and have it reblued.

Bought it new in 1950.

One that I passed on... My neighbor/ beer drinking buddy Don stopped by one day asking me if I'd be interested in buying his uncles old '94. Don thought it was pretty much worthless, and offered it to me for $250. Suffice it to say that don is an octogenarian, so the rifle was of a good vintage. When he brought it over, I just couldn't do it. I ended up having him sell it on an auction site for $1,300. But damn was it nice! 1909 vintage with 26" octogon bbl in .38-55. The last pic should let you know how many rounds she sent downrange...

The first rifle I bought when I turned 18 a few years ago at Cabela's was a 94. I got home and looked up the serial number and it was made in 1951. It's my favorite rifle and remained my deer rifle from then on.

I just got one a couple weeks ago when my local dealer turned up one in 30-30 pre-crossbolt, presumably post-64. I had wanted one since I saw the one my uncle owned in the '60s (!).

Oddly enough, my personal firearm back then was a Savage 99 and I've never felt the urge to replace it (blasphemy, I know).

'94 Trapper in .44 magnum, here!!!

Well, actually, I bought it for my son, the day he was born, 11 years ago.

It had 10 rounds through it, when I got it. It's not been fired since.

I broke down and bought the large lever for it. It's in my desk, in my reloading room.

I've got 2. Got them right before they stopped making them. One's the Trapper ,357. The other is a 26" .44 mag. They are the garbage models everyone talks about. Although they run excelent, accurate as all get out and real beautiful guns. I still haven't figuered out the garbage part, but I'm sure they are cause a lot of guys say so!

It is old, tired and hangs on my wall most of the time but still fires a 150 grain lump of metal every time I pull the trigger in the general direction I want it to go.

I have had a 9422M since I was 14 years old. My dad gave it to me as an X-Mas gift. I have to say it is one of best shooting guns I own. I recently came a across a 94AE in 30-30 that I picked up from a guy for $200.00. I would say the gun is 97-98%. I just couldn't pass it up. My son was just born and I am going to put it in the safe and will be his first gun when he is a wee bit older.

Me too, plain jane 30-30, classic.

The first centerfire firearm I got was a-'94-in-all-but-name 64A that was an early birthday/Chrismas gift in time for the 1973 deer season. It's still here and still does a decent job, even though I've gotten led astray by all kinds of other deer guns over the years.

Grandpa's 30.30 vintage 1899. Still shoots great.But the metal buttplate wears on you.

AZRebel, sorry for taking so long to answer. The primary reason that I chose to do any of it was that, A), Dad added a layer of linseed oil every year, a couple of weeks before hunting season. and B), the receiver was worn white at the "carry place". I could see gorgeous walnut under all that gummy crap. I got all the crap off the wood, and put on the first coat of polyurethane, sanded with 200 grit, and put on a second really thin coat. I could see a really faint, but pretty burl in the walnut. So I added another 30 light coats of polyurethane... sanding with 600 "wet or dry" sandpaper, wet, in between coats.
Do you remember the old Coca-Cola Santa Clause 3-D advertisements?... as you moved the ad, Santa went from holding the Coke bottle and smiling, to drinking the Coke? Well, having done the refinishing, the walnut grain does the same kind of thing.... it looks 30 feet deep, and "moves before your eyes" as you move the rifle a few degrees this way and that. If it was just "plain 'ol walnut", I'd never have taken the time. I did it because I both love and truly RESPECT the rifle, and my Dad.
Tell you what, the next time I go up to my Folk's house, I'll take a bunch of pics of the 'ol girl, and I'll learn what it takes to post a few pics for you to see. Actually, I'll post them, and see if I can send them to you, in the event that you don't visit this thread again.
