Absoutley not. No one has ever killed a deer with a 30.30
Everyone knows that to kill a deer you need a 300 Win Mag at a minimum.
What a stupid question.

:D

Will a 30-30 kill a deer?

Definitely not!

My 30-30 just sits in the closet ... the lazy bastard.

It is ME that has to get up at 4.30 in the morning and drive an hour, then go sit out in the cold until Bambi walks by. Then I have to aim and pull the trigger. No, the 30-30 didn't kill the deer, I killed the deer.

Then the lazy rifle just leans against a tree while I do the hard and messy work.

Besides, I don't think they will sell a hunting license to a 30-30.

Tallpine,

Exactly what I was thinking. I had one for years and it never did anything except when I was holding it. I'm thinking I should get the credit.

I dunno, that .700 Nitro Express may work for your small game, but I generally feel that you need to get into the 72 milimeter range to get proper penetration in the hide of an average white tail. Them things is made of kevlar I tell ya.

A deer...it depends

Hundreds/thousands....oh yeah...

Some people believe that particular caliber may have killed more deer than any other

Hunting folklore says that the .30-30 has killed more deer than any other cartridge. I say that the .30-30 has killed more LEGAL deer than any other cartridge. I think that the .22LR has killed more deer than any else.

Just my .02,

Hate to admit it in the 3 seasons I carried a 30-30, it killed NO deer. None.

It drew down on a few, and took a shot at an elk.

But it missed.

Now that I'm a better hunter the 30-30 could still kill a deer or two.

Nope! You really need to call in airstrikes! Barring an airstrike a minimum of .50 cal is necessary.:D

But as we all know if you don't have a Glock you'll never get that pesky deer!

My two .30-30's usually just stay in the gun safe and look pretty. I think I only have about 10 rounds for them on hand. I have too many other guns to go gunking up those old timers. Go figure, I would like to get a deer or some pigs this year with my M1 Garand or my Swiss K-31, but the .30-30 is just going to sit in the safe.

I'm thinking I may need to get one o them 30-30 pea shooters.
After toting around my Henry I've come to realize the inherent excellence of the lever action rifle. It's so thick with deer here I'd really only need the henry, or perhaps one in 22wmr(if it were legal).

The only thing my 30-30 has killed, and will kill, is gallon jugs of water, steel plates (makes nice holes!), pop cans/bottles (plastic), paper targets, clay pigeons, and similar targets. I'm not a hunter, only because I don't eat venison, not because I won't shoot animals...but boy, the 30-30 sho is fun to plink with! :D

The three most important words in deer hunting: penetration, penetration, penetration. In the 100 plus years since the .30-30's introduction deer have developed much thicker hides and a much heavier bone structure. Everyone knows this, I'm surprised you'ed even ask such a silly question. That's why I bought a .375 H&H. :D

Sebago, you are absolutely right.
It is Darwins theory in action.
As the threat of being penetrated by projectiles has increased over the past couple thousand years, so has the preys natural defenses.
I another thousand or so their hair will have Kevlarlike properties.

I have hit many a deer on the noggin with my .30-30 and have not yet succeeded in getting one to drop dead on the first blow.

In fact, all of them ran away and did not want to play any more.

I told my Mom and she said they were just brats.
