Hi,

I am thinking about buying my father in law an AR-15 kit for Christmas. Before I do, would someone please give me the 411 on applicable gun laws in NY. He lives in Westchester.

Are there magazine capacity restrictions?
Does he have the register the stripped lower with the county?

Any help would be appreciated. I have been perusing the laws online and cannot seem to find my answer.

NY has their own version of the now dead AWB. Pre '94 "hi cap" mags are OK, newer mags over 10 rounds are a no no. Same goes for flash hiders and collapsible stocks. As for registering the lower, I don't know.

Some vendors still list pre '94 mags on their sites for people who are in NY and other places.

The rifle must be post-ban configuration (typical "assault weapon" description/restriction applies). Mags must be 10 or less, or made before Sept 04. There is no need to register the receiver (that I know of).

Go to Gander Mountain in Kingston, NY. The store is on Route 9w. They usually have about 6 or 7 NY legal Ar-15's in stock. Last time I was there, most of the ones in stock were Bushmasters. If you want to take a ride to Albany, there are two good gun stores on Central Avenue that carry Ar 15's.... whatever way you go, be ready to shell out about $1,000 and up.
