Hi all, I'm thinking about getting into long range shooting. I've been reading up on old threads on THR and the 700PSS in .308 is highly recommended. I'll probably be mating this with some model Leupold scope (to be determined).

I'm perfectly happy going with this model, but I'd like to know if there are others that you recommend (Remington or otherwise). I have Remington shotguns and I'm very impressed with the quality.

Thanks in advance for any advice!

Remington 700 VSSF or Rem 700 VLS in .308

or Rem 40X in 7.62 Nato or 300 WinMag

Savage Model 12. Put the money you save on glass.
I've got two Savages, a 112BVSS in .30-06 and a 10FP in .308. I wouldn't have anything else. Indeed, I probably saved the cost of the Bausch & Lomb Elites mounted on both guns, not to mention replacing the crappy black stock on the 10FP with a Savage laminated varmint stock.

Both guns are very accurate at 600 yards. The 10FP is extrmely accurate, even with GI M118 special ball match ammo.

I have a 700VS (basically the PSS with a conventional looking H-S Precision type stock) .308 with a 4-12 Leupold Vari-X II. With 168 grain Federal Gold Medal ammo three shot groups at 100 yards can be covered with a dime, and five shot groups can be covered with a nickel. It is bone stock except for a three pound trigger.

This may sound weird, but the Savages just don't feel right to me :). I know the feel of a rifle (how it fits you, etc) is very subjective, but the Remington just fit me better.

Just my .02,

I have the same one. It will shoot an honest 1.5" five shot group at 300 yds with 175 g Sierras.
