so about 11 days ago i purchased a charles daly field tactical 12 guage at my local big 5, i go to pick it up today and i experience i slight inconvience. here in califonia you have to buy a gun lock for anygun that doesnt come with a california aproved gun lock, so i bought that at the time of perchase and took it home. when i whent to go get my shotgun today i turns out they wouldnt let me take it home with out the lock that i brought, the employee who sold me the gun never told me that the lock has to accompany the gun when it is take home. so i say that "ok" and go get my lock from home, drive back and take my shotgun home. heres where im pissed, it turns out that the gun the employee sold me was a hunting version and not the tactical one i had held and told him i would take. now i have no way of knowing because everything looked on the up and up. charles daly 12 guage, sold at the correct price. how was i supose to know? and its not like im gonna assemble my gun in the big 5 store and check! what to do. im seriously pissed! you would think that when i hold a certain shotgun and say i will take this one they will give you the right one!!

Sir:

You need to change the title. My 13 year old reads here and doesn't need to see this language. The High Road.

WEll,you already had to drive back once, why not drive back again and see what they can do.?
above all,be nice. How much would YOU do for someone who's being an a-hole?
I've been in retail for years, and will go above and beyond for someone who is treating me with respect.

Give it a try and let us now what happens.

I bought a shotgun from the big 5 in Corona last year.

They were not the brightest people in the world. I had a coupon and was buying an on sale gun... I literally had to come back twice, call, and ask for a manager the second time to get them to honor their own discount.

Once we got that squared away they brought out and opened up the box of the gun I was going to receive. That was on the day I bought (before the waiting period started). Good thing too because it was a 20ga and I was buying a 12ga. Another round of confusion and a mess of silly paperwork (plus a pointless waiting period ... um, California... I already HAD guns... why make me wait for another? Hello?) I had the shotgun and no intention of buying another gun (or much of anything else) from them again.

Sucks that nobody caught the error in your case.

Sorry you had a bad experience. Mine with Big 5 in Wichita Falls TX was totally oppposite of yours. They were extremely helpful and gracious, and went above and beyond the norm for retail service when I got my lever gun there. And it involved a 2 1/2 hr drive just to GET there on my part! I am very pleased with the service I got at Big 5.

I used to work at Dept 1 (gun counter) at the corporate store next door to Headquarters in El segundo,Ca.
Had you come to our store, you would have been Very Happy with the service you'd have gotten.
Of course, I'm not there anymore so who knows....:neener:

I did get 9 C&R type rifles while I was there....

To the Op, take it back, they'll make it right.

Who Are Big 5?

For those without an Internet connection or a browser and mouse, or whose access to Google is blocked by an evil corporation . . .

Big 5 has a website.

They sell sporting goods.

They also (at least where I've lived) have a gun counter (over in "hunting").

Sometimes the guy working that department is smart, experienced, and conscientious. Sometimes not. Kind of like, oh, just about any store you'd care to name.

Only, for today, could we please not name them?

I'm sure they will take it back and order the right one.

Of course, you've already waited on one to come in from an order and you don't feel like waiting on another one. So it's an inconvenience. Now if they say "you accepted it when you took it home, sorry." Then I would want someone's head on a plate. I hope you haven't shot the thing or something stupid like that. If so, shame on you. I'm not trying to sound smite towards you, but you really should have checked out the shotgun for any problems (shipping damage, etc.) before you took it home. Anyway, any decent company would take it back and make it right if you haven't fired it. Good luck.

I'll never buy a another firearm from Big5 again!
Maybe thats their plan, crappy gun service.
They were quick to take my money. After the waiting
period,I went to get my rifle and was waiting for
45 minutes.They sold sunglasses,a couple of knives,
then they finally got around to me.:fire:
I told them I had a gun safe and had an affidavit,
but they put the gun lock on the gun(a lever rifle),
now it won't fit in the box:rolleyes:.Then, they
escort me out of the store.I asked the guy,
whats to stop me from getting to my car, unlocking the rifle,
load it and go on a murderous rampage....(crickets).:banghead:
It was without a doubt the biggest hassle I have ever
had purchasing a firearm.

As far as the gun lock goes, you should always bring it back to the store when you pick up the gun. That way they can verify the receipt, and you can return the lock and get your money back.

Thats what I do!
Take rifle to the car and then turn around and return the lock..

I've purchased one C&R from Big 5. Went fairly smoothly, once I tracked down a store that actually had at least one of the guns that I wanted. They even suggested that I not just take the display gun, but look over the other two like it that they had in the back, and pick the one I liked best. It worked out for me, anyway.

Course, there's no such thing as a waiting period here, either.

Big 5 is not a gun store. It's a sports store that happens to have gun stuff. Look around the place. They have every sport imaginable represented. The employees are usually high school students on minimum wage. Don't expect any type of gun knowledge from anybody there.

I've had good experiences with Big 5 firearms. However, I expect almost nothing from the employees. I prefer if they just keep quiet and take my order.

Regarding the proof of lock in Cali, what the employee did has nothing to do with Cali law. That's just Big 5 policy. Under Cali law, long guns are different. You just have to sign a paper attesting to the fact that you have a Cali-approved safe or lock. You don't have to physically show the locking device to them. Nor does a long gun have to be transported with a lock. It just has to be unloaded.

Regarding the mistaken gun, I'd take that back immediately. By the way, if there were any confusion as to what the gun was, I would have disassembled the gun right there in front of the guy.

I've been there, the salesmen are stupid. If you know what you want, and watch their sales brochures, you can find good deals. Don't expect to get expert advise from the guy behind the counter, most likely he usually sells shoes!

Shouldn't it say on the box exactly what model it is or did you bother to look? If the gun doesn't match the box then it should be no problem correcting the mistake.

im happy to report that my faith in big 5 has been fully restored. the manger was very nice and understood my delima, he simply asked me to bring back the the shotgun so he could exchange it for the correct model and transfer over the paper work without the hassel of another 10 day weighting period. will be back to buy more guns from them.

I don't trust a sales clerk making $7/hr to get things right. I always check out the purchase in detail before completing the transaction. I've seen used and scuffed guns passed off as new.

If you watch their ads you can get a good price on various pump shotguns of the "tacticool" variety At the store here in Everett, WA they aren't morons usually.
