Which of the 5 270win should I get?

The synthetic stock 111fcxp. Ebay the scope, and buy a Leupold.

The Vanguard and the Howa are the same rifle action in different stocks.

I vote for the Vanguard. It's got a better trigger than the Savage (I detest the Accurtrigger and can adjust the Howa/Vanguard version pretty tolerable), it and the Howa have a 24" barrel (which I prefer over the Savage 22" barrels), and it doesn't have the throw-away scope of the Howa package.

But of the ones you listed I would get the Savage 111G.

I definitley would NOT get that "package" deal with the scope. It will be a pain in the you-know-what, and you'll have to buy a decent scope anyway.

The scope. It's a cheapie slapped on the rifle just to increase the amount of the sale. You need a good scope, not a junker.

I've owned the vanguard (essentially the same thing as the howa 1500 with a fluted bolt) The trigger group is not as good as a rem700 adjustment wise but you can get a decent pull (or a really good pull if you don't mind negating the safety...not good on a hunting rifle) My bud bought a matching one in .30-06 as well and we both hunted with them for a couple of years. They both shot almost any decent hunting ammo into 1-1.5" groups at 100 yards which is what they are guaranteed for with the weatherby. I put somewhere around 1200-1500 rounds through mine as best I can remember (I did a lot of plinking with it as it was my first new centerfire production hunting rifle...I'd been shooting mostly well used and surplus guns before that and a lot of rimfire. It served me very well but I never really warmed up to it....neither did my bud oddly. In fact he just commented on our way to hunt this afternoon that he never regretted selling it even as good as it shot. Maybe it was the stock...it just lacked personality...though it certainly did everything a good hunting rifle should. I've owned many dozens of rifles since then...I tend to like Rugers these days.

I'd probably rather have a used ruger over a new most anything else under $800-ish. You can find a lot of very nice quallity used guns with very decent scopes rings and bases for what the semi-disposable cheaper savages and vanguards run new. That said Savages usually shoot about as well as anything...but like my old vanguard they just don't have much style or class...no feeling of beauty or quallity like you get with a nice older Rem700 ADL with the nice wood or BDL , win mod 70's (overpriced right now usually) M77 and M77 mkII (my favorite cheaper rifle) You'll also find the occassional decent mauser sporter somebody has grown tired of when a new wiz-bang super magnum round came out. There are a lot of VERY nice rifles out there for about $500 used that new probably with rings bases and good to very decent scopes cost over $1000 to put together. Most people don't shoot their hunting rifles all that much and abuse is usually pretty easy to spot (bring a bore-light).

That said is you just gotta have something new throw away the rings the savages come with and buy some decent ones and take off and loctite/guntite the weaver base screws. Put at least a $200 nikon buckmasters or Burris 3-9x40 on it if it doesn't have something at least that decent on it. I'd rather have a used rifle with a few scuffs and a Nikon or Leupold in good bases and rings that a new vanguard/savage with junk-bin rings and a $30-50 simmons scope on it. I'd buy the cheaper stevens 200 model if I had to to afford the nikon. The scope is a LEAST as important as the rifle. Nikon buckmasters Leupold VXII (don't buy a rifleman from walmart they are crap) If you have to go Bushnell an Elite 3200 or up. If you just can't spend $200 get a prostaff...but you'll reall whish you'd spent $45 more on the buckmasters. Also Burris FullField II is a very decent scope on a budget. Sometimes you can find good slightly used ones where somebody has upgraded to a VXIII or Zeiss conquest or up ect. I'd generally sooner buy a used rifle than a used scope though...just me.

I think shawnee means that the scope you get in that packaged deal is junk, so it will be a bit of a pain taking it off and getting a newer better one.

I partly agree with him, and partly not. The scope isn't great, but it will be good enough, at least for a while. You can get a newer better scope in a year or two.

Personally, I'd not pay extra for the wood stock ones, plus synthetic is better all-weather.

Also, the Weatherby Vanguard, it is the same as the Howa internally. You are paying for a more recongnizable brand name. Scratch that one off your list.

that leaves the savage 111F or the Howa Lightning. Both are good guns. I'd say hold them if you can, sometimes certain stock thickness here and thinness there feels real good, or sometimes just feels real wrong, but really that is just personal taste

Personally I would go to a pawn shop or gun store and pick up a used Ruger, Remington or Tikka.

But if having to choose a new gun from your list, I would take the Howa. They seem to be a very good gun for the money.

For the same money you could probably get a basic Remington 700 new with black synthetic stock and matte black finish.

All pretty much low rent IMHO , buy a good used gun or a Ruger. The Savages are accurate enough, if you like sheet metal.

Here, this has rings. It will be a nice rifle 20 years from now. The Vanguard is OK as is the Howa. You might like Savages. BUT this (for instance)is a REAL rifle you can do things to up the road.

I am reading between the lines here, but it appears that you are prepared to spend $400-500 on a rifle. I would scrap the whole WalMart gun plan and try to find a good, clean, used Remington (not a 710) or Ruger. For the same $400-500, you should be able to get a "higher end" gun on the used market.

Here if you can get this for less than $500 you will be the envy of us all. Just trying to educate you kid!

I would strongly consider the Howa, actually. I am always impressed by their products when they have a table at the gunshow.
