Hey everyone, if I missed the answer to this question in my search sorry to waste your time/space.

I'm looking to buy my first ak type rifle, and have narrowed it down to a handful.

1) Yugoslavian AK M70AB 1 or 2, (aim surplus or classic arms)

2) Romanian AK build on classic arms. According to the description, this is G parts kit in good condition, that has been matched up with an American made receiver. The builder is listed as "Heavy Metal Guns."

There is a lot of info and positive reviews of the Yugo m70ab type rifles so that seems straight forward.

The Romanian ak also seems like a good option, but I've heard that you have to be VERY careful what builder put together your rifle. I've heard that even a great set of parts can be put together badly.

Does anyone have any experience with this particular rifle from classic arms, or experience with other rifles built by heavy metal guns?

Also, it looks like the heavy metal guns build AK uses parts in the included American made magazines for 922 compliance. Does this mean that the rifle could not legally be used with imported magazines?

Sorry for the long winded post, and thank you very much in advance for your help!

I don't have any knowledge of Heavy Metal Guns. My question is what is your budget. If you are looking for a good AK, or if you are looking for a great one? I have two Saiga's. One I converted to 922 compliance (which was a fun project.). The other is a Krebs Custom. Marc Krebs is at the the top of the ladder as far as builders go.

I started off looking at sks's (200ish dollars) and slowly read up and talked myself into spending 400 ish for an ak.

I'm comfortable paying the $429 (plus transfer) I'm seeing for yogo m70ab's on various websites.

I know that another one or two hundred dollars would get me a lot more rifle, but I'm going to stick with a $400-$450 budget.

I was leaning towards Saiga's for awhile, but I don't have the tools or experiance to do the conversion myself. That means I either pay someone else to do it, or stock up on saiga specific hi cap mags (and thier not cheap either).

Am I missing an angle here?

Someday it would be cool to have an arsenal or Lancaster consulting (or krebs, don't know much about him yet, but maybe I should) but for know I'll have to go cheaper.

Don't sell yourself short. Any man with a toolbox can convert a saiga.

Borrow a drill from your neighbor if you don't have one. Converting Saigas is very very easy.

If you have AK build parties in your area, they can help you convert, as well.

I have an M70B1, a Saiga conversion and an Arsenal, all are great rifles.

For the money its hard to beat a Saiga but then if you want to convert it you're looking at more money but still relatively cheap. My Saiga was already converted when I bought it a few weeks ago for $340 so I lucked out.

If you want a good AK that requires no converting and for under $500 then you can't do much better than a Yugo.

J&G is selling Polish Tantal's right now for $529 and they are great AK's, if I hadn't already exceeded my yearly gun budget so severely I'd pick one up.

thanks everyone for the responses

I did a little more checking, and the saiga conversion does look easier then I thought, and it would be an excuse to buy a couple of things (punches, files).

On the subject of rifles that don't need any conversion, I've seen some prices for Hungarian AMD-65 rifles that seem pretty good (including on J&G, thanks nwilliams).

I don't hear anyone mention the amd-65 often, is it some kind of black sheep ak?

thanks again for the info, I really do appreciate it.
