Why does McCain have a C+ from the NRA?

I've found that McCain has a C+ rating from the NRA, but I can't find why...He opposed the assault weapons ban, and supports the 2nd amendment as a individual right. The only negative thing I can find is the McCain-Feingold law, which has to do with campaigning, not gun ownership.

So, why the C+?

I think you had better check your facts again, streetstang67. Try Googling here, in this forum, as well as on the web....

As recently as two years ago, he voted with SCUBA Ted and the others on the mfr-liability legislation.

McCain is NO friend of 2nd-Amendment / individual rights interpretations, no matter what he says. The NRA is generous in giving him a C+.

Woah. Hold on there. I believe McCain supported the assault weapons ban and voted for it. He may have not voted for it's extension, but that doesn't absolve him of his original sin. He actually promoted the AWB when it was initially passed, IIRC. Maybe I'm wrong. I'm sure others will weigh in shortly with the accurate data.

Nope, it looks like I'm wrong. He didn't vote for the Clinton Crime bill with the AWB in it. My mistake.

I served with McCain. I supported him for awhile last time he ran. I decided he was no friend of the honest gun owner. He has been after the supposed gun show loop hole for awhile with the Demo's.

I think I could live with him. He is not perfect on a lot of issues, but a whole lot better than B. H. Obama and Sen. Clinton on virtually all issues.

I can't disagree with your statement. However, I would be extemely nervous about our gun rights if he is the Prez with a democratic party in power in congress and the likes of Lugosi (oops, Pelosi) and Dingy Harry (oops, Reid) in control of what bills get sent up for the Prez's signature.

I'd take McCain over the NYC Mayor or the MA governor. . .

but that's not saying much.

I'm right on with RiverDog. I would vote for McCain even though I would NEVER vote for Guliani. Not that McCain is pro2A, but he's not the gun grabbing extremist that Guliani was when he was mayor.

McCain, like most candidates, does not recognize the Second or any of the original limits on government power.

I saw an interview the other day with a New Hampshire voter. "I like Obama for his freshness, but I like McCain's straightforward talk." I like how he subtly put McCain down on the same level as a Chicago gun-grabber while appearing to applaud him. Sneaky.

Do a THR search on "gunshow loophole". McCain sponsored legislation which would regulate gunshows for the purpose of closing the loophole. A Stalinist piece of legislation if ever there was one. The contempt he shows for part of the first amendment is amplified regarding the second amendment. The man is no friend of those who support the second amendment.

To bad Bugs Bunny isn't running.

I wouldn't. He might be against guns because he is getting shot at. Maybe Elmer Fudd....

I think McCain has the best chance of winning of all of the relatively "pro-gun" candidates. Romney and Guiliani are both gun grabbers to the extreme as are all of the front-runner Demos.

Huckabee and Thompson I just don't think have nearly as much chance. Alas.

Guys, when it gets down to it, the WORST republican is likely to be better than the best Democrat.

However, their strategy for the past few years (or longer...) has been "vote anyone but a Bush crony," or "vote anyone but a republican." And it has worked to a very great deal. They don't really talk a lot specifically about their plans - they just keep crying for "change," and saying that "well, everyone knows that Republicans are bad, right?"

And it is very likely to work. So before you write in a cartoon character, ask who you'd rather have in office - someone who won't hurt you a lot, or someone who parties with Pelosi, Schumer and Reid... I know what my answer is....

More than perhaps ever before in our nation's history, this election will not be about voting to put someone in the Oval Office.

It will be about voting to keep someone out of the Oval Office.

And everyone who intends to do write-in votes or vote obscure third party as a "protest" vote would do well to remember that. Your protest vote might just get you a helluva lot more than you originally bargained for.

If the election came down to McCain and any of the Democratic front-runners, you'd be a fool not to vote for McCain.

I have principles and I am going to send them a message. Doesn't matter what happens afterwards. Like in the 2006 election, when gun owners joined in throwing Republicans out of office to send them a message. They got the message: gun owners are more interested in sending messages than in keeping their guns.

I am a gun owner. I am voting for Ronald Reagan. That'll show them.

Not really. An anti-gun Republican president could get Republican congresscritters to vote for gun control measures that they normally wouldn't vote for via party loyalty, favors, etc, where as Republican congresscritters would likely oppose a Democratic president on such measures simply because that president has a D next to their name.

Hence, IMO, Giuliani and Romney are bigger threats to the RKBA than Obama or Hillary.

What if that 3rd party best represents your views? Wouldnt it make sense to vote for that then?
