checking a handgun at baggage counter in Newark airport

UPS the gun to yourself in TEXAS.

Make sure you don't violate any firearm laws while driving back. In Texas you are fine as your RV is the same as your house.

Without a carry permit, I don't see what the point is of wanting to take a handgun to Texas just to drive back with it unless you are going to be shooting there. If it is just protection for the trip back, take a shotgun or buy one in Texas. If not, then in most states you probably won't be allowed to legally have it loaded in your vehicle. The RV being same as your "home" is interesting. That is a finer point than I have the background to tackle.

Driving from TX back to NJ ,loaded vehicle carry is allowed in TX,LA,GA,SC,NC,VA and DE.
The no-go states are AL,MD and NJ.
All in all not bad. This is without ANY CCW from any state.

Best to stay away from NY & nearby NJ airports with firearms.
That's not bad advice. Check out Lehigh Valley International Airport (code: ABE) which is about an hour west (depending on traffic) in Pennsylvania. Much, much smaller airport.

Since you're talking about handguns, isn't NJ the screwy place that gets its panties all wadded up over hollow points?

airlines

Ah, for simpler times. I once got on a local feeder flight and they said throw the rifle in the seat behind you. But I guess I'm giving away my age.

I have flown in and out of that airport. Security is tight and they are serious. There is no way I would consider trying to check a legal firearm at that airport. You can be 110% in the right but it would not be worth it. Mail it to yourself or forgo the gun while on your trip.

GHF seems to know what's going on...but for my money it is not worth the hassle!

You COULD just not bother going back to NJ..

I mean, you're flying here to pick up a motor home...no real sense in heading back to Moscow-on-the-Hudson...

All kidding aside, enjoy your stay in Space City.

Let me rephrase... Texas considers ANY vehicle or hotel/motel the same as your own house. You have every right to defend it as such. Thank you Gov Perry and '07 legislature/gun lobby.

The problem with flying from smaller airports is:

1. Not that big of a selection of flights.
2. Most flights from small airports require a connection which increases the chance of your luggage being lost.
3. Ticket cost can be substantially higher.

Yes that incident at Newark happened 2 years ago. An overzealous cop (to be kind) stepped out of his bounds in doing what he did and believe me Port Authority will be paying for his mistake. I worked at Newark Airport and had routine contact with Port Authority 1983-2005. In those 22 years the incident 2 years ago was the only one of it's type I ever heard of. Even if there is only one person a day checking a firearm the odds of having a bad experience doing so is very low.

Many of the comments in this thread are based on conjecture and rumor. As long as you are following TSA and the airline rules you should have no problem. I never did.

Loaded Vehicle carry is okay in Mississippi too, concealed or open.

Here is what I did

Cop To COP, when I moved to Fl. I had a bud in Jupitar who was retired, from NYPD working up there, had my local precinct ship the guns directlly to his commanding officer. Free of charge if I remember, I just took a drive up to his station, and picked them up. i don't know if it's still done that way, but call your local Law, and ask. You are always better off doing it the right way.

I have flown with a gun several times prior to 9/11. So this info might be dated.

1 expect some confusion. Most if the airline employees just don't know the rules. Print out a copy of their and TSA's rules and have them with you.

You might even see some over reaction. Once when leaving DC I declared my weapon. The clerk scream "OH MY GOD" and stood there whit his hand in the air. I told him to go get his supervisor, then proceeded on with no trouble.

Again I haven't flown since 9/11 and TSA's inception. But TSA shouldn't enter into checked baggage once it's declared. But I would expect some stupidity form the shepple minded types. But it should be do able.

Good luck

Got that tee shirt.

Walked up to the counter at Houston Intercontinental years ago, and said, "I have a handgun to declare".

The airline employee's eyes got big and she froze as if I'd said, "This is a stickup, give me all the money!".

A supervisor eventually took me through the usual process, but things were definitely tense there for a few mintues.

Flying back from San Diego was a breeze and the employee inspecting my handgun was cool and asked all kinds of buying questions.

Of course, I can't tell the story of how I accidentally ended up with a loaded handgun beyond security at Houston Intercontinental. But it taught me a very valuable lesson and caused premature greying.:what:

There was a case last year of a guy getting way-layed in Jersey while traveling with his gun. When he tried to board a new flight the next day he was arrested. Flying with a gun is absolutely no problem in most states and I have done it several times. I wouldn't trust NJ however.

Just a quick update. I put a trggier lock on the 1911 and placed it inside a locking case. I had a box of Winchester White box ammo in the factory package inside the case as well. I put the locking case that inside another regular looking suit case. I told the baggage lady I had to check a firearm. She called over the TSA agent and they took me to the side and asked to see the gun. I opened the luggage bag and then pulled out the locking case. I opened that case and showed him the gun. Showed him it was unloaded. He says "Looks good thank you."...I locked it all back up, they gave me a special tag for the luggage case and checked the bag....nothing to it!

On top of it all while in Texas I stopped by Jim Pruetts Guns and Ammo as it was near the RV dealer and wound up buying a mossberg 500 persuader that was on sale for $75 LESS than the best price I've seen here in Jersey...so it was a great trip after all...

Thanks agian to all who posted...things went very smoothly.

Now the 1637 mile drive back home...that was another story!
