This case proves how the media is shamelessly willing to get all giddy and stupid when 911 works for a home invasion. What tactics can be learned from this case (lol)?

Resident beats burglars at hide-and-seek
January 18th, 2008 @ 9:41pm
Sarah Dallof reporting

A woman hiding in a closet from burglars was shocked when they opened the doors -- not once but twice -- and never saw her.

The 911 tape from the incident runs for about 13 minutes. It felt like forever to the young woman hiding in the closet in her West Jordan home. But she had a calm, collected 911 operator helping her through it.

"Please hurry," 21-year-old Brittney said during the 911 call. The operator asked, "Can you hear anybody downstairs?" Brittney answered, "Yes."

Brittney made the call yesterday. Police say three men rang her doorbell, and when no one answered they let themselves in. The intruders smashed in the window, climbed inside and headed upstairs to see what they could find, all while Brittney was home.

"It's almost surreal. I can't even comprehend the feelings," Brittney told us today.

As the burglars got closer, she hid in an upstairs closet. At one point on the 911 recording, the burglars are heard arranging for a ride. "You get closer yet by chance? Because we'll be ready in like, maybe 10 minutes," one of them said.

John Fitisemanu was the operator on the other end of the 911 call. "It got pretty intense at times during the call," he told us.

One of the burglars, looking for stuff to steal, opened the closet where Brittney was hiding. "I was just standing right there. He pushed it open and was bumping into my legs, my boots," she said.

Fitisemanu is heard on the 911 tape telling Brittney, "I do have some officers in the backyard and on the corners of your house."

The burglars spotted police and scrambled. One jumped into the bedroom closet, inches from Brittney. "He was standing right there. I could have kissed his cheek if I'd stood on my tippy toes," she said.

She stayed still and silent until officers entered the bedroom. Then Brittney said, "He's in here!" Police ordered him out of the closet. "He looked at me with a completely dumbfounded expression, like, 'Where'd she come from?'" Brittney explained.

The three were taken into custody without further problems. Today Brittney met John, the man who kept her calm during those tense minutes.

"I felt OK. Being on the phone with someone helped," she said.

The suspects, Adam Cloward, Jake Hampton and Tony Cone, are in jail on charges of aggravated burglary, theft and criminal mischief. Police say they found two knives and brass knuckles on the suspects.

Brittney says she feels incredibly lucky. She chose not to give us her last name for this story.

I had dinner with my parents tonight and my mom was telling me about this. I can't believe the guy didn't even know she was there. Good thing for him it wasn't somebody more armed and determined hiding in that closet!

My wife and I talked about that after the news. Thats one very lucky lady. Doesn't happen often.

It also points out the odd twist of things from "just don't answer the door" tactic. The BG's seemed to have no idea she was home. Maybe some kind of response at the door would have sent them off. This is second guessing to say the least and I have no reason to expect there could have been a better outcome. After all...the invaders were caught and arrested and she wasn't hurt. Can't get better. Still, she NEEDS to get a gun and learn how to use it. Next time :uhoh:!

Mark.

13 MINUTES! The 911 call lasted 13 minutes? Wow, a whole lot of bad things can happen to someone in that kind of time frame. Seriously...this incident, along with the 911 tape from the incident in Indiana that had a 5+ minute time between the start of the call and the act of self defense should show anyone with an IQ higher than a popscicle stick that individuals are totally at the mercy of criminals and must fend for themselves or risk death.

Yep. Pick up a copy of Armed and Female by Paxton Quigley and read the account of the teenage girl whose father provided her with a 5-shot .38 snub on her 18th birthday...just days before she was kidnapped and forced into the trunk of her car. Unbeknownst to the would-be rapist...she had the little revolver in her purse, which she took into the trunk wth her.

As the cretin drove her to a remote location, he yelled at her and described all the wonderous things that he intended to do to her once they had gotten far enough out in the boonies to insure that they wouldn't be interrupted.

When he stopped and opened the trunk to retrieve his prize...the young lass emptied the revolver into him, which caused him to fall forward into the trunk and onto her. She pushed him off...walked a couple miles to a pay phone... and calmly called the police.

lucky...really really really really lucky....

on the other hand, im sure she realises that herself, and is looking into more...eh "solid" means of defending herself.

I misread the headline. At first I thought it said "1911 Works for Home Invasions".

I think I've been spending too much time here...

If her closet is anything like some girls' I've dated, I'm not surprised; between the mountains of shoes, the full tupperware containers, and a layer of garments hundreds deep, you could conceal a young lady in there along with Iraq's WMD's and the Lindbergh baby.

That story is great! Good girl escapes unharmed! Is it verifiable?

Here's another incident that occurred a day before the posted article:

Teen nails burglar with bat inside Mesa home

A 14-year-old boy came face to face with a burglar ransacking his Mesa home on Tuesday and used a baseball bat to level the playing field.

Michael Six hid in his bedroom closet and called 911 after seeing a man using a screwdriver to break into a sliding-glass door.

The Kino Junior High ninth-grader talked in a low voice as he described the burglar's whereabouts.

Then, Michael, clutching an aluminum baseball bat, heard his locked bedroom door rattle as the man used the screwdriver to bust in.

"You need to get out of the window," the 911 operator told Michael.

"I can't," he answered with a hint of anxiety in his voice.

"I didn't know what to do," Michael said Wednesday. "I didn't think I could pop (the window) open. My adrenaline was running. I was scared."

The man was still clutching the screwdriver as he rummaged through the boy's backpack. Then, Michael, a 5-foot-10-inch, 150-pound former baseball player, stepped out and swung.

The burglar cursed as Michael nailed him on the lower back and on the left shoulder.

"Sorry, man!" Michael yelled amid the chaos. Michael said the man, described as "big," then "turned around and took (the bat) from me."

The burglar ran out the back as Michael, uninjured, busted through a window and met police.

Police arrested Thomas Gonzales Garza, 30, of Chandler.

Sure, but the article doesn't tell you what happened to Michaels One through Five.

:neener:

Poor guy. I couldn't even imagine having to hide from a home invader. Even when I was in Jr. high I had dogs and guns to help out.

I'd have knifed 'em.

'bout all I can do without getting an ILLEGAL OMG CAUSE I'M IN COLLIDGE WHERE THEY KNOW BEST HOW TO DEFEND ME!!!! gun :(

13 minutes? Holy crap. When seconds matter, the cops will be there in minutes.

I mean no disrespect to the cops, it is simply how the system works. They can't be everywhere.

I have guns to help with home defense, because I am big, and my closet is small

Can you hide in your gun safe?

Same here.
I'm really a gun-nut.

That is why you need guns. You can use them when you're out of arm's reach. I'm wondering why the burglar wasn't out cold from a swing from a baseball player...
Somebody's a ninny.

The kid hit his back and shoulder. The head should always be #1. First thing they always teach you with edged weapons or even stick fighting (except other fighters, you wanna hit their hands first...) (Kinda wanted to be able to pick up anything and use it as a weapon, stick, knife, sword, hand to hand, martial arts, etc. etc. etc.).

Luciky the robber was an idiot, ive caught two guys before. Lucikly I had a carbine ready to go. From then on, i've always kept weapons around... just in case.
good luck

Can you hide in your gun safe?

Yes, but I would have to go to the trouble of pulling out everything, and if I have time to pull out a dozen rifles to make room for me, well then, I can probably just load one, affix bayonets, and dig in. I do sometimes go in there to hide from the GF, door to door salesmen, or even sometimes just for fun. It is kinda like Superman's fortress of solitude, but surrounded by guns, and smells of hoppes #9, it is indeed my "happy place":D
