I already left comments on your blog, but I just have to reiterate: LOVED IT. Not often do I read a book that is so much fun to visualize in my head. I too think it would be an awesome movie. It's also not often that I pick up a book that is so hard to put down, I had to force myself to do things like go to work and pay attention to my wife. Put me down for a copy of every book you ever write. Thanks for writing it!

Larry, loved the book. It took me three days to finish it, that was because work and family got in the way.

I have read much much worse mainstream fiction books that should never have been published by major publishing houses, I guess it's their loss they didn't publish yours.

As soon as I get a chance, I will put a review on Amazon. Looking forward to the next book.

My thoughts on MHI:

It's two buckets of fun with a dash of yippee. It's a very good debut, and I enjoyed it a lot. It is a little overlong, and the battle in the swamp is so climactic that it almost overshadows the end, but it's a whale of a good time, and I'm looking forward to the sequel(s).

The action sequences range from very good to flat-out terrific. My favorite is the gargoyle assault on the asylum: the first glimpse of the gargoyles is nicely hair-raising, and the way the action unfolds from there is just wonderful. Many points for the car chase, and for the dude in the NRA hat who finally had an opportunity to use his boat anchor. My least favorite: possibly the battle in the swamp, not because it was ineffective, but because I couldn't believe you were killing so many of the cast with so much book to go -- and then they all died and came back, and I went, "meh." That could come back to bite you. if you do kill any of 'em in the future, it could come off as anti-climactic: we've seen them die; we've suffered that loss.

The writing is very strong in general -- the humorous asides are especially well done -- and you did a great job making me like the team: my favorite was Holly, but Trip was terrific, as were Skippy, Gretchen and company. Nice job of creating an interesting mix of different characters: you manage to make the team pleasantly diverse while spoofing the tendency toward PC-ness, and it works out pretty well. The downside, if there is one, is that they come together almost too smoothly: the only person who's really different from that is Grant, and that's because of his attitude, not because of his outlook. But it makes for a fun time and a good team.

A word on Grant: my favorite part involving him is the humanizing little scene he gets, when Owen's eavesdropping reveals that Grant is upset to be beaten at anything, to make a bad call, because if he's anything less than perfect he's not good enough. It's hard to make anybody feel bad for the Golden Boy, but you did a great job of making Grant a character there, as somebody Julie could believably fall for; the rest of the time, he's Stock Jerk Boyfriend #437, not really a person. (I like Julie's Evil!Vampire!Mom for that reason: she's not just the evil vampire figure, she's an evil vampire who is horrifyingly mothering, and that breaks her out of stock mold. Grant could have used more humanizing.)

My biggest problem with the story was Julie. She didn't really give me a strong sense of her as a character for a long while, and that meant that the love story was the weakest part of MHI for me. Julie appears as pretty much the ideal woman for a lot of gun nuts: she's beautiful and loves guns, whoopee! ...but I didn't get a sense of why Owen fell for her beyond that. Yeah, lust, I can believe immediately, even a crush, but growing love? That was a bit weak from my point of view. More importantly, I didn't get a sense of why she'd fall for him. For the early part of MHI, Owen comes off as the guy with a crush on her, and a disturbing hatred of her boyfriend. This does a great job of dramatizing the darker side of Owen, the things about himself that he represses and is afraid of, but it doesn't do very well at making Owen seem like a logical choice for Julie. When, early on, she told him she understood how he felt, I was surprised that she gave him that much of a window rather than crush his hopes.

Oh, and you forgot my patch. :) But it's definitely a fun book, and it does a great job of cheerful gun fun without being didactic -- a major problem with a lot of the books catering to our demographic.

I absolutely loved it!

I ground through it in about 4 days, reading mostly at night next to my sleeping wife.

I have to say I kinda figured out the significance of the main character re: his description inscribed on the black column when I was reading it. I thought I had spoiled the ending for myself, but I was happy to see that it wasn't exactly as I guessed.

I am going to guess that the part immediately after the main character died and before the reset happens, is the part that got cut out per the publisher?

PS. A couple guys mentioned that their pre-order was signed?

I had great expectations for this book, and I have to say they were far exceeded! The book struck one of the best balances between action, humor and plot that I've seen in a long time. Add in just the right amount of "technojargon" explained in ways a non-enthusiast would understand, and you've got the makings of a really entertaining work.

I cannot wait to see the sequel. And maybe a Saiga 12ga or two. ;)

Any recommendations on a non-SBR Abomination? :D

I was very impressed for a first book. Actually, I thought the werewolf fight at the start was the weakest, or at least I wasn't very impressed with reading it online. Ordered the book more out of respect for Larry than expectation... But I was very wrong. Raced through it and was constantly pointing out parts to my wife. Saw very few typos, or if they were there then I missed them - the sign of a good book. I semi-missed the prophesy thing, but I'm not great at that stuff.

I would agree somewhat with Well-Armed Lamb's opinion of Julie. Dangerously close to the stereotypical gun-girl, similar to EFD. Got better as it went along, as did EFD's portrayal.

The best part to me, the part that stuck with me, is how well the monster mythos could fit into real life. Shadowy gov't program to hunt down and cover up moster outbreaks (only unrealistic in allowing independent competition). Monsters lurking in the shadows concealed as serial killers etc. Details of the monster's mechanics, with the best example being how the gargoyles are made of stone, but have molten rock for joints. Duh, I smacked my forehead, how else can they bend and twist? Elves and orcs as fringe communities.

My favorite quote that hasn't been posted yet: "I did not know what a Spig 9 was, but if it was in fact a gun that she needed help to even move, I was very excited."

Can't wait for MHI II. Tannish patches would be nice too, and would separate out those true believers like me who got them on the first round (cough). Keep up the good work!

Edit:
Also meant to ask if Owen's Ganga Ram khukuri was from Himalayan Imports? I was about to post a book recommendation on the HI Bladeforums board and wanted the details.

Thanks for the comments.

Yeah, the love story was the hardest part to write, believe me. For some reason I have a gift for killing stuff, but emotions? That's TOUGH! Ironically enough, Julie isn't really made up, and everyone that actually knows me immediatly says, "Oh, you just wrote about your wife, cool." Sorry if that makes the rest of the gun nuts jealous, but that's really who I'm married to. :p (only in reality her primary is a Tikka T3, but I went with an M14 for style)

Grant is also based on a real person. I won't say anything incriminating, but he did date my wife before I did. But I won, nyah!

Post away. HI rocks. Owen ends up using a Chitilangi in book II. (and my personal one is from HI).

Speaking of which, for those of you that post on other forums, as a 1st time, self-published wannabe, I could use all the promotion I can get. Tell your friends!

CNYcacher, yeah, everything that was ordered from me should have been signed. Sorry about that. I did 150 in one day, and it looks like I missed a couple. Also, if I missed your patch, let me know and I'll mail you one. I'm getting more made right now. Well-Armed and others, shoot me a PM with your address and I'll mail you one.

I have to say I kinda figured out the significance of the main character re: his description inscribed on the black column when I was reading it.
Really, I never tried to conceal that from the reader. Now the protagonist didn't know it, and it is 1st person POV, so if he didn't know it, he never said it. It was a revelation to him, but I kind of figured most of the readers would know by the time it got there.

A most excellent read.:D

An outstanding job well done.

A question please, regarding specialty ammo for the abomination*, you mention a "magnum breaching round" using tungsten and magnesium IIRC My GF is currently reading book so I cannot consult the book. Tungsten I understand greater denisity than lead and harder but why the magnesium?

Also considering the damage a Master Vampire can take before becoming immobilized I cannot imangine how MVs were killed prior to modern firearms:confused:

Again an EXCELLENT job and I book I will be recomending.

Please let me know when I can order MHI2.

NukemJim

*can we get a group buy going on clones of the abomination without the grenade launcher?

Hmm clones of Abomination. Sounds like something I might just have to get in on! :D

Sign me up for interest in an Abomination clone.

Got the book back from the friend I lent it to and I'm in the process of re-reading it now. 2nd time through is just as enjoyable. Picking up on a few things that I missed the first time or forgot between one sitting and the next. The scoring with friends dead mom and new definition of "staking" a vampire come to mind. I have been skipping over the Cursed One back story bits. They really kind of throw off the flow of the book to me for some reason. (Now that I know the basic back story.)

So, now that you've ruined our preconceived notion of elves, what's next?
Trying to think of something that would equally interesting or amusing to see.

Nukem, that's where I'm guilty of a "hmm... what sounds cool..." moment. :)

Happy, there will be some more preconceived notions challenged, but that's top secret for now.

My personal short Saiga is a Tromix. But Tromix is back ordered for like a year and a half now. We've got a new local company called Fat Kid that is going to be making some awesome Saiga conversions. It is made up of two guys that used to work for Vector Arms building AKs, and I know and trust both of them, as they've done some pretty complicated custom work for FBMG in the past. Plus one of them is a fan of MHI. I'll have to bug him about building an Abomination. The hard part will be custom fabbing the bayonet locking system.

I know a guy who can fab the golf ball launchers (instead of grenade...).
I bet it wouldn't be that hard to make an incendiary golfball. Not that anyone should try... I'm sure something about that would be illegal.. and dangerous. ;)

MHI is one of the most fun reads ever. I've been jonesing for MHI II
for about 2 years!

I found a picture of Larry's chitlangi. (It looks MUCH smaller with him holding it, since he is literally twice my size.)

Bogie, I do plan on making a B-Movie set in the MHI universe. That is one of my ultimate goals in life, as I'm a huge B-Movie geek, and have always wanted to make my own. However it won't be this story, or this team. This book would need a real budget and a real director. Hell, think of the cost just for the explosives!

I haven't been lending the book to many people, (well, anyone, really) 'cause I want them to buy a copy, but I lent MHI to my director tonight...

Shhhhhhhhhhhh, I'm still Reading!!!! LOL.

Larry, I turned the patch upside down. LOL. Now that's Funny!

Great book and I have been telling everyone about it too!

Larry, as I said on your blog, you are an Evil Bas***d for making us wait for the sequel!!!

I have to admit, when I found the link to your blog from Lawdog's blog, I knew that it would be a self-published book... and the last one I bought (because the author's brother was my Lodge Brother) was AWFUL.

What a wonderful surprise MHI turned out to be!!! Tore through it in 3 nights... and had a hard time closing it to go to sleep or work.

Favorite quote? "Exactly how many gun laws does this thing break?" "All of them."

Honestly, reading MHI I lost count of the times I'd start laughing out loud at something I'd read.

Oh, and as for you guys who don't think that Julie can be real? I know a 5'6" version of her - not married to me, alas. She just gave her husband a Ruger Redhawk for his birthday. And I've run a mini-Appleseed shoot for her and her hubby, so this should give you an idea that yes, they're out there. (they're just mostly taken, though. :()

Oh, one other thing... No dwarves? If ya got elves, ya gotta have dwarves! I was kind of thinking that Milo would turn out to be one... the height, the forked beard, the metal working skills...

Larry , Great Book ,I read it in 2 settings. And since I live about 30 miles from the Enchanted Trailer Park , I may have to start packing something heavier. I am waiting for MHI II . Keep writeing.
