We'd all like to run Black Hills, Hornady TAP, etc., but I'm a college student and don't really care to shell out the $$$ for the really good stuff for typical range duty, particularly considering how .223 as a whole has gone up. In your opinion, who makes the best low-cost .223?

I just picked up 100 rds of AE at the gun show. 55s in FMJ boats they work the best in my Rem 700. I also picked up 500 silver bear for the WASR to eat up. The WASR is never picky, and I have sometimes shot better with heavier stuff in it. The cheapest bang for the buck though is definately silver bear, 500 rds for $120 is only $.24 per rd. Hopefully it is enough to get me through the summer.

Barnaul is great stuff all around, regardless of what caliber. You can find it labeled as either Barnaul (which is actually the city it's made in, not the factory) or under the Brown/Silver/Golden Bear name. Same great stuff.

If ya are into reloading or don't like steel case, then Prvi Partisan is the way to go. Hands down the best deal on brass-cased ammo out there. It's accurate, reliable and best of all cheap. They use high quality military style brass (nice thick walls for long reloading life) and everything is of course boxer primed.

So go with Barnaul for steel case and Prvi for brass. Can't go wrong either way.

I voted Wolf and have shot lots of it. You can still get 1000rnd's for under $200.

I also shoot an reload lots of 223 American Eagle (Federal = Lake City). Plus, there's usually plenty of brass to pick up at the range as well. I picked up over 250 cases from a guy shooting his AR next to me last visit. I asked him what he was going to do with all the brass laying on the ground...he said "you can have it"! It was all Remington Brass. Over the last three visits to the range I've gotten over 600 once fired Winchester and S&B 223 brass that was just left Plus I picked up my own brass (of course). I have a 30cal ammo can 1/3 full of Wolf (plinking) and the rest filled up with boxes of reloaded 223 (target and varmint) with another 400 brass primed and ready for powder and bullets in a gallon ziplock.

The Prvi is good stuff for the money. I have used a couple thousand rounds and been pleased enough to buy more. No failures with it at all.

well none of the .223/5.56 options are really inexpensive anymore.

buut my favorite of teh ones that you listed is the umc, and the winchester 5.56

Another vote for Barnaul, better than Wolf IMHO and cheaper to boot. My AR loves the 62 FMJBT. Should be good for storage as well, lacquered at the bullet and primer. Haven't tried the PRVI, might have to pick some up, any reports on the brass quality? Bill

Has all the Guatemalan milsurp disappeared? I've still got a couple thousand rounds tucked away in my ammo closet. It's not very accurate, but it makes a lot of noise and is a real blast to shoot out of a 16" barrel.
