WASR ? What are they?

Mines identical to Grant's WASR-10.

No flash hider, no bayolug. Just a chunk of bullet spewing sheet metal and plywood!

Seriously, mine is great. I thought I got my $329 worth.

Whats not seen too often is the WASR 10 in it's un-altered form. I picked up two at $175 each and then found a deal on 10 round mags for $6 so i got 10 of them.

I recently bought a WASR-3 (5.56X45) not really knowing what I was getting (it is my first AK). But I'm good friends with the gun shop owner, and he told me it would be reliable, but not too accurate. He was willing to work with me on trading it back if I didn't like it. Well, he was right about reliable, but wrong about accurate. I've gone through several Mini-14s before I finally just broke down and started buying AR-15 platforms to get a tack driver. Knowing me as he does, he thought I'd be disappointed in the WASR. I'm not. If I had had the WASR I have now when I was spending $$ on Rugers, I'd have been much happier.

Ok, it isn't nearly as accurate as my Colt Accurized AR-15, but I don't take that one rabbit hunting either. I've found that my WASR-3 is light weight, reliable, and accurate enough to pop varmits - far better than any of the mini-14s I went though in the past.

I got a WASR-2 (5.45) for less than $300. The ammo was cheap, mags not too bad, and to top it all off, the American trigger was excellent. Recommended.

i bought mines for $399 two weeks ago while a local gun shop had some as high as $475 for the same thing. fired 400 round through it with no problem. i don't like the furniture, finish and quality but i didn't buy this gun for a grammy award, just a lil sum sum for the range and a back up hunting rifle. very reliable. accuracy is mid for me...

I also like the guns because to me they are the "All-American Rifle" - forget for the moment that they come from Romania. They are utilitarian, they are reasonably accurate for most purposes, they are cheap. They are basically the Model T of AK-47s. It comes off an assembly line, it ain't pretty, and you can have one in any color, so long as it's black (ok, brownish if you count the handguards).

People seem to have forgotten the good ole days when the Norincos, Maadis, and FEGs and such were cheap and common. Canted sights and gasblocks are not a new thing just for "low quality WASRs". A couple of my MAK90s had the worst canted front sights I've encountered yet... I haven't had a WASR but my SAR1 and 2 were literally 100% straight and were great shooters.

They're the crudest, cheapest AK you can get
True.I certainly cant dispute that at all. That said, I have had mine for about 4 years now, and it has been 100% reliable, the finish was just fine (its not a show gun, or bbq gun after all.Things like that will cost noticeably more in ANY gun.)I redid mine with rustoleum 1400 deg high temp bbq paint and it looks great.I always get compliments and pm'swhenever I post a pic anywhere. And all for about $3 for a can.Its also plenty accurate for a plinker/HD/SD/SHTF gun.If you want a long range precision rifle, you shouldnt be lookin at ANY manufacturers ak IMHO.As for canted sights and such, I havent really heard of this being an issue with the ones they have been selling the last couple years, but either way, just go to a shop where you can see it in person like I did, and it's a total non-issue.I love mine, and it does exactly what I want it to do, all day, every time, on the cheap.I guess thats all I was trying to say.

WASR = AK knockoff from Romania. Like most imported/milsurp AKs and AK clones, crude but reliable and effective. I've shot plenty of rounds through one and have had it jam twice, not picky about ammo either. They're not overly accurate but fine for plinking targets at the range. Overall, good fun for the money as long as you don't expect some wundergun.

Edit: If you want an AK but desire to step up some in quality without breaking the bank, look at the Yugoslavian M-series guns and the Hungarian AMD-65.

The parts are not mil spec.

... so our Ruger rifles aren't any good? How about Remington? Smith & Wesson?

Frankly, my WASR-3 outshoots every Ruger Mini-14 I have ever owned (which is why I no longer own them). :D I can't wait to get my new WASR-10 to the range to see how it compares to my old Ruger MiniThirty (which I also no longer own).

If you live near a Dunhams you may be able to pick one up on sale pretty cheaply. Just keep an eye out for sales and keep checking the non sale prices on a regular basis. On Friday the local store had them for 230$, marked down from 350$. Yesterday they were listed at 350$ and marked down from 425$. It seems that in Michigan the WASR market is nearly as volatile as the crude oil market!

I wanted one at 230$ and went back to buy it but 350$ is more than I wanted to pay. Especially because what I really needed was a new pile jacket and some Under Armour Cold Gear.

+1 on watching Dunham's sales. I bought a 10 round for $200 and a 30 round for $279 last year. If you ask, most stores have several in the back and will let you pick what you want. Don't try this on a Saturday afternoon when there are 15 other customers waiting though.

Question: I have been wondering what kind of finish that is on the WASR-10. I own one, and to me it looks parkerized. Or is it simply painted? I think the dust cover is blued however.

I've heard retailers call it parkerizing and black oxide. I don't think it's paint because I dumped some weird solvents on mine while cleaning it up and nothing happened to the finish.

From what I understand, the stock finish serves as a good base for hi-temp paints, Gun Kote, etc. Be sure to degrease *thoroughly* if you do it.

any noticeable differences in quality between a SAR and WASR?

I ask because I have a Romanian that I got a few years back and I think it's SAR

lionking, if your Kalashnikov has dimples on the side of the mag well, it's a SAR.

If it has smooth sides to the receiver, it's most likely a WASR.
