Wow, the MSRP is only $356 for the camo stocked version. The street price will likely be even less. I hope it is better quality than the earlier budget offering Remington produced. My hopes aren't that high due to the lower price but it sure looks pretty in the pictures.

Even though I have a Rem 700 BDL in 30-06 I'd be tempted by the Marlin in the same caliber. 30-30 would be a little more tempting to me, though I'm guessing they'd offer it in 308 Marlin Express before they'd do one in 30-30.
 
Let's see....Marlin doing a bolt action centerfire, and Mossberg doing a leveraction...

What's up with THAT?
 
Nem: I'm not sure anything could be done with a bolt gun that would extend the range/accuracy of the .30-30 much beyond what they have already done with the 336XLR, especially in conjuntion with LeverEvolution ammo. But that's just my opinion -- I could be wrong.
 
guys i got back from new york this morning after a school trip ...it was AWSOME


but i missed my guns and i actually found my self talking to a mounted officer in time square about his pistol....it was a sig 226 lol


i never thought i would miss seeing camo jackets every where as much as i did

Z, I wouldn't argue with that.

.30-30 is a lever rnd, not a bolt rnd.

Without redesigning the case,
I doubt any improvement will happen.

And at the cost of speed in a bolt.
 
I'm looking for a hollow point bullet to load on top of IMR 3031 for my 336C for deer. Anyone have any suggestions? My normal practice/plinking round is a LRN 115g over IMR 4064, but I need something that will put a deer down, not just wound it so it can run off. I have been invited on a Virginia deer hunting trip in the fall of this year and have been told I need to find a hollow point in the 150-170g range. I was just going to take Remington Cor-lokt 170g SP's but the person who told me about the hollow point idea is a respected hunting friend. What do you think?

Going to Midway and Cheaperthandirt to look for ideas.

i would say that any flat or round nose 30-30 round in the right place will drop them. i don't think that a hollow point is needed.

get a 170 grain round nose from Federal and you'll be good. if you reload get a speer flat nose or a hornady flat nose.

I like the 170 grain bullet myself. just has more umph!
 
i really dont see the point in hollow points ina .30-30

i use 150gr soft points and i got 2 deer this season

1 dropped and 1 ran 10ft

but then agian the first one i blew out the eye socket from like 30yards

the second one i obliterated the heart so it was running on pure adrenalin
 
I have some Remington Cor-lokt in 170g SP and the 150g variety is readily available and fairly cheap. Practice rounds in either weight I can reload with LRN in each weight. This combination should be sufficient without hollow points. Thanks for the responses guys.:)
 
Great thread! Love looking at all your pics! Im glad to say "Im in" the club! I have 2, a 30-30 and a .44 Mag! Next Marlin for me is a 1895G in 45-70!

Ok I will join!

I have a very nice 336 from the 70's that Mike of Mikes Guns in St Louis has made me promise to give him first bid on, it was my dads. I have had mike put a leupold mont and 4x9 scope on it. Yeah I kept the factory screws too.

I would venture to say it has less than 100 down the bore, in fact when I "borrowed" it from pop (I think he is miffed about the scope) the ammo was dated '89 in the case!

i HAVE PUT AN ADDITIONAL 20 THROUGH IT(caps lock) and I would bet on it at 100 yards. Quite impressive, unscratched and I really love it!

I will get some pics up if I can figure it out!

My first Straight Stocked 336 was traded off but I soon realized I needed another. After that another one appeared and then most recently I found another that required my buyin' it. I'm not sure if I'm done yet or not. We'll have to see if I can resist the next time I see one for sale.

I'm still sitting on the fence about straight stock v. pistol grip. I grew up with pg. All of my long guns have always had pg by preference. I just couldn't warm up to straight stock. (Disclaimer: IMO, it's purely a matter of preference; I can see no clear benefit of one over the other in principle.)

My 336A & 39A are both pg.

Then, I bought my 1894C. Straight stock. I'd rather have had pg on it,
but I wanted it enough that I "bit the bullet" (so to speak) and took the straight.

So far, it's working for me. I still don't like it as much as my pg, but it's growing on me. It requires a modification in how I hold the rifle ... which is why I stayed with pg for so long: familiar stocks promote a faster "I-don't-have-to-think-about-it" grip.

YMMV, of course.
 
I have to agree, PG vs. Straight is really just preference. I have Marlins with both but I prefer the straight though I like the look of the PG too. Blonds vs. Brunettes kinda thing, like em both, given a choice though...
 
Bullet Shape

I read somewhere that there is a special shape bullet required for use in a 336 to avoid having the tip of the bullet hit the primer of the shell in front of it in the magazine causing an AD ... is this true ?

I would like to see the pointed bullet in a tubular magazine tested in Myth busters. It certainly seems plausible.

Chester, most bullets designed for the 30-30 have rounded or flat points with the exception of Hornady's LeverEvolution ammo. The LE ammo has a soft point for safe use in a tubular magazine but its pointy enough to have better ballistics.

My 336's will feed empty cases, rounds loaded with a single buckshot that only half of it protrudes from the case. I've heard of guys loading pointy bullets and using the "two shot" method of one in the magazine, one in the chamber, with success.
 
New to the high road and new to the 336 club, I have a late seventies .30-30 which pre-dates me by a few years. It has some sling studs on it and I was wondering what evryone reccomends for swivels and a good sling,I would like to put a leather sling on it so as to maintain traditional appearances. Would an Uncle Mikes military sling work???
