What make AK?

I just recently bought a WASR-10. Meets your price criteria leaving $'s for ammo left. I haven't shot it too much yet but sure do like it. It's my first move into the EBR arena, call it a panic buy based on the outlook for the future.

AK snobs will tell you it's a cheapo rifle and you can do better. The fit and finish on mine is what I'd expect and no problems so far. The advice I've heard so far includes-make sure the front sight isn't canted, do a good general check out on the gun and you'll be fine.

WASRs run, but they have QC problems like canted front sights. For $70 more you can get a Yugoslavian. They're a little more solid(the metal used for the reciever is thicker), the finish is a lot nicer, and they have the magazine well dimple to keep the mag from knocking about(and it makes it look better, IMO).

If it's a special buy, get a 5.45 AK.

Ammo is very cheap, the recoil from 5.45 is even less than 7.62x39, and 5.45 has a much flatter trajectory than 7.62, increasing your practical accuracy. BSW

Folks, let's keep the WASR problems in perspective.

If you import 500,000 WASRs and build 10,000 Yugos, the odds of you seeing a 'bad build' out of the WASR is way up there.

Also, it's human nature to keep bad news around while barely acknowledging good news.

I'm not saying there's anything wrong with WASRs for the most part. They run(atleast the WASR10s do, I've heard the WASR2s have some problems), no one's saying they don't, all I'm saying is that the fit and finish on them leaves a little to be desired.

OTOH, for the price, it's not something I can really fault them for, I just don't mind the extra $70 added to the price tag to get something that looks and feels a little more solid, that's all.

Never had a WASR, so i can't really say, but i hear they function,which is what they're paid to do. But, if you can get a considerably nicer rifle for a few more bucks, why wouldn't you? And, as fortune would have it.......YOU CAN !!!! The aforementioned yugos,for instance, running around $420-ish from Aim,among others.Or the Romy G;s from classicarms @ $349, or the vectors and lancasters @ around $500+ from Atlantic.And we musn't neglect the lowly Saiga, all Russian,top-quality, but sadly, in need of conversion for inclusion in propper AK ranks. Still,converted or not, a killer choice. Anyway,if you'd use the search feature ( i understand, i hate it too) you'll find all these come highly recommended. And if you handle any of these side by side with the most honorable WASR, you will quickly see (and feel ) why the WASR's get their balls broken so much !!
P.S. I own everything recommended above 'cept for a Vector.

I choose Lancaster Arms and am extreamly happy with the quality and service I'm getting out of my custom AKM.

ive got a WASR 10 and aside from a misaligned front sight it runs great, and i needed to get the frong sight tool anyways to get a proper zero

You could always go the 5.56mm route for an AK. I absolutely love my Saiga 5.56.

dilbert, how are you gonna say something about a training course and then not give any details about the who, what, where, and when of the course. be sure that you do an aar when the class is done!

as far as ak's i have a mak-90 norinco that i love, it is a great shooter and is reliable as can be if i was in the market for another i would get one of the yugo underfolders they are the best that i have used.

I bought 2 of these last week. What I received was abysmal at best.

The rivets were beat to oblivion, mashed and mangled.

The were assembled with suspect parts, IE the G2 single hook trigger that the receiver manufacturer (NDS) warns against using.

One rifle exhibited several instances of "hammer follow". The other had a trigger issue that cause the trigger to stick in the rear position, due to poor trigger installation.

Over at AKForum I found another poster that had similar issues as mine. One other fellow did say his gun functioned fine and he was happy with it but mentioned one of the rivet heads had visible cracks in it.

In my opinion the HMG guns are one step BELOW a WASR. WASRs aint pretty, but the rivet work is good and they function.

My two guns are in transit back to Classic as we speak.

That was a lawyer induced message from NDS. They had one run of receivers where the G2s didn't work well without hand fitting. I've built a few dozen NDS-3 AKs with the G2 FCG and not seen this problem. There are quite a few other builders who haven't seen it, either.

For under $500, a Yugo is probably your best bet in terms of quality. A Romanian that runs fine, though, should work too -- but I'd avoid ordering blind with them, get one you can put hands on and inspect.

Most everything else is above your price limit, barring some really nice deal you luck into.

One of the rifles I had in my hands "hammer followed" 4 times in 120 rounds (4 30rd magazines) - lawyer induced or not I EXPERIENCED the failure.....I didnt read about it.

Hammer follow issue aside, the guns were still poorly assembled (ie mangled rivets, hammer sticking to the rear).

How many of these do you own? What was your experience with the HMG assembled guns?

Im not saying your guns suck or anyone elses, I only have experience with the HMG assembled guns.....and I wasnt impressed.

As long as you are spending $500... you should consider spending another $200 and getting a 5.45 rifle (AK-74 clone). Ammo is cheaper and they shoot great. I think AK-74s are one of the best kept secrets.

Get a Yugo fixed stock for $419 while you still can from classicarms.us They are by far the best deal gloing right now.

The romanian "G" builds from classic are also very good values. I try to stay away from WASR's if i know im going to be needing it to work right without being sent back, as all of mine have required either returning to century or a decent ammount of work to either function at all, or function reliably depending on which WASR.

What about the SAR-1? I'm selling mine

I vote against 5.45x39. There is no domestic production of it so some BS executive order or ATF ruling can make the ammo supply dry up.

Check out Atlantic Firearms. Yugo, Vector, and Lancaster should get you where you need to be.
