Howdy folks,
Recently, things have changed for me. I now have the opportunity to request orders to a duty station outside of PRK upon my return from Iraq (Re-enlistment time came early and I might just bite). I have a wide variety of choices before me. Whidbey Island, WA; Norfolk, VA; Camp Lejeune, Cherry Point, New River, NC; Pensacola, FL; Corpus Christi, TX; Yuma, AZ; Beaufort, SC; Atlanta, GA; or New Orleans, LA. If I'm VERY VERY lucky, Quantico, VA. (and maybe school to spell some of these places).

Has anyone been around any of those areas? If you have a personal experience of those areas, please let me know. Since this is THR, of course I'm mostly talking about why I should choose these places from a 2A standpoint; ya know, stuff like how tough is it to get a CCL, oddball gun laws I should be aware of, ranges I can shoot steel cased ammo, stuff like that.

Or if you know of any reserve Marine Corps AIRCRAFT SQUADRONs that are around that I didn't mention, let me know of them too...I'm having a tough time finding reserve squadrons and if I had my choice, I'd like to do my job as an active guy working in a reserve unit.

For you old guys concerned about me, don't worry, I'm not going to pick a place soley based on its gun laws, I have a family to consider.

Thanks in advance THR.

Top two on the list would be Quantico and Corpus Christi. Stafford Co., VA is nice, even if it is a little short haircut-heavy between Q and the FBI presence. Corpus Christi I've never been to, so I'm going on second-hand recommendations. I'd stay away from NC and SC, especially since it sounds like the sheriff in Onslow County, NC is a bit of a git. SC I know has extremely jacked-up laws in comparison with most of the rest of the South, so even if it is nice otherwise, it just doesn't make hurricane season worth it.

I live in Atlanta and work for the Army. Getting a CCW here is probably easier than most other places in the country. No classes, no tests, basically go to your county probate court pay the $43 get fingerprinted and wait for it to come in the mail.

Georgia has some goofy carry laws to be sure but they also have pretty good reciprocity, especially in southern states. I also lived and still own property in South Carolina. Tougher to get a CCW there, classes and tests, and they don't have much reciprocity with other states. My daughter lives about 35 miles from Pensacola and I'm down there quite often. Nice place, decent gun laws, but real estate - and real estate insurance is really quite pricey. From those you listed, I'd lean towards Corpus Christi Texas. I lived in San Antonio for 10 years and I really like Texas. I've looked at a few jobs there myself.

As always, God bless all of you that serve this country...

Even though King County hates it, Washington is shall-issue. Usually overcast, gray and wet, but that gives a natural excuse for your cover-garment...

Schools are a little lacking here in PRWA, though. No state income tax (yet), but one of the highest sales-tax rates in the country (8.9% in Seattle/King County), plus legislators looking for new and creative ways to tax everything right down to your car's engine displacement.

No full-auto, no short-barrel, no use of suppressors, but pretty good on CCW as long as you keep it concealed and buy private-sale.

In Atlanta I'm assuming that you're referring to NAS Atlanta which really shares the runway and real estate with Dobbins ARB. I started my civil service career at Dobbins and it's in a great location in Marietta - northwest of Atlanta proper.

The pistol range I use is about a mile from my house and is a very friendly place to shoot. I know long gun shooters frequent a club about 20 minutes North of town that even allows Class III guns. The FFL I use for transfers is an ex-Marine and he's about as cheap as any on the planet as he charges $15 per 4473 and you can get 3 guns on 1 form. He'll also receive guns from private parties and will order just about anything you'd want at very good prices.

If you choose Atlanta, let me know and I'll help if I can...

I spent five years at Eglin AFB, Fla, about 35 miles east of Pensacola, and found Pensacola Navy to be a nice place as military bases go on some of our frequent trips over there. Cannot comment about duty there, besides I left the area about 30 years ago.

Eglin has a huge reservation on which sits at least 3 hard surface afb bases( in 1979) Eglin main, Hurlburt field ( special ops) and Duke field (AF Res training for ac 130) plus numerous dirt strips on the heavily wooded reservation which is about 25miles n-s and 40miles e-w in area. Numerous small lakes , and lots of deer hunting.( I had a friend who was an ac 130 command pilot, who told me that one night they tracked a deer poacher to his home off base for game wardens , and the poacher never knew it until they knocked on his door)

Joint Army/ AF manuvers are head yearly with usually armor units and AF support, used to be A-10 and AC 130.

Eglin also has the climatic hanger where they test aircraft, military and commercial for reliability in almost any environment hot/wet to cold/dry and I do mean extremes .

There are several nice clean rivers, Blackwater river and Coldwater creek for canoing NE of Pensacola, water is tinted brown/black due to dissolved tannins in water but is otherwise clear, and very cold even in mid summer.

About another 60 miles E. at Panama City is Tyndall AFB, which has a reservation similar in size to Eglin. Pensacola Navy and auxially fields also occupy a large amount of land, and between those three bases a large part of NW Florida is military reservation.

Norfolk, VA

Winters are mild; lots to do in the area; great for the family.
If you're military, all you'll need is $50 and the time to fill out the paperwork to get a CHL.
All the blue point crabs you can eat.

(I can't believe I just recommended another Jarhead move to this area.)

While I love my home state of AZ, Yuma has the distiction of being in the middle of nowhere, and HOT, hotter than the rest of the state, (other than Gila Bend), so unless you like HOT, with close access to Kali and our great gun laws, might want to look further.
I have no idea about Marine bases here...I am an ex squid. :)

I was stationed at Fort Hood for several years and I used to drive several hours to Corpus Christi for FUN every now and then. When people say "beach" they always think nice, sandy white, Florida like. Corpus's beaches are Gulf Coast, so the water is murkey and the beaches consist of what looks like creek gravel, but they're not bad. Port Aransas is a blast, you're pretty close to Schlitterbahn near San Antonio (America's largest water park) so the family will LOVE that. The weather is most often GREAT and the Texas gun laws are some of the best too.

Stay away from New Orleans. I apologize to any N.O. folks here, but I recently spent 90 days in a row there, and it's still a write-off from the hurricane. The "HELP US!" attitude is still prevalent. GET OFF YOUR BUTTS AND OUT OF THE HANDOUT LINE AND HELP YOURSELVES!

The gun laws are irrelevant in N.O. Yes, you can probably legally do this and legally do that. Everyone else is doing it illegally and nobody cares. If you do have a good CCW weapon, you will most likely get to use it. I have the utmost respect for police officers in N.O. They are earning their paychecks for sure. The only positive, is the food. Hands down, the best food in the world.

Lejune

Aaryq: Sir; should you like fishing, hunting, beach, out and away from most of the state. Camp Lejune, or Cherry Point. Cherry Point is closer to Morehead, shooting range close by so is on @Lejune.
Deer, Bear, raccoon, squirrel, fishing out the yeng. Big Tuna; within distance offshore. And more.
I have gone out there for most of 40yrs+ and still get excited.
Quantico less than 2hrs away.

Two hours away? By what, helicopter?

Try more like six. And it's spelled Lejeune. I lived there as a kid.

I am not a Marine, but I work outside of Beaufort. I would choose some of the other stations. I am not overly impressed with this area. I am here because I got married and put down roots in the area, but I would rather be somewhere else!

I second this gentleman. The Pensacola area will be to your liking. He's described this lovely terrain very well. It's still very laid back and has a lot of open spaces.
Some of Florida's best hunting and fishing is here. This part of Florida is also very gun friendly ,although of course no open carry per state law.The Panhandle still has a sort of Old South feel to it and Georgia and Alabama are just a short ride away. All the nearby states share reciprocity with FL CCW except SC.

Long long ago I spent most of a year stationed at Correy Station in Pensacola. It may well have been my favorite duty station while in the Navy. If I had to pick one on your list it would be Pensacola

Whideby Island is gorgeous country. It is in Puget sound north of Seattle. The southern tip is about even with Everett (accessed via the Mukilteo ferry) and the northern tip comes out at Anacortes. fairly rural on the entire island at from anacortes northward.

If you like boating then Puget Sound is one of the ost ideal places to do it over a couple of hundred miles in salt water protected ro the brunt of the Pacific Ocean. You have all of the San Juan islands north of Whidbey. The Cascades are to the east for fantastic hiking and skiiing, and good elk and deer hunting on the east side of the mountains (60 miles away). Or you can get over to the Olympic Mtns for excellent hiking, camping and hunting.

Everett and south is pretty congested for traffic since it all gets bottlenecked into I-405 and I-5 with no other north south routes. If you like country then I would stay on Whidbey and northwards.

Gun laws are pretty decent. Rural sheriffs especially are easy to get a CHL, but the whole state is shall issue. Snohoish, King, and northern Pierce counties are the hotbeds of whacko liberalism and overall population. which dominates state politics. Tacoma tends to be a bit ore conservative and then you have the huge McChord AFB and Ft Lewis army bases south of Tacoma. Olympia is the state capital and very liberal.

Whidbey Island is actually a bit in the rain shadow of the Olympic Mtns so it is a little drier than say Olympia. Th wet weather comes off the ocena fro the southwest. Lots of forests and mountains, salt water, lakes and rivers.

Summers are from June till into September ranging from 60 F - 95F but averaging about 75 F. Winters are Nov - Mar and range about 20 F - 60 F avergagin about 45 F. A sunny spring/summer/fall day in the northwest is about as glorious as God makes them. however, the winters can be a long string of grey skies, often with drizzle. and being in a northern state you have daylight in the summers fro 4am - 10pm easily; and in the winter is is only light fro about 8am - 4pm.

I would never live between Tacoma and Everett (I grew up in Olympia on the sound itself), but almost anywhere else, and especially along the Sound is beautiful and pretty good people.
