Sigs

I'm a long time shooter, a never-had-a-Sig-shooter, and now, a I-gotta-hav-a-Sig-shooter.

This all started by me going to work part-time at a local gun store. We have an indoor range, and have a fleet of rental guns available. A couple of co-workers were talking "Sig" one day, and I mentioned that I had never shot a Sig before. They all said in agreement, "don't do it....you'll never be the same". I really didn't understand what they meant. I had picked up and held various models of Sigs, and really liked the way some of them felt in my hands especially the 220,226, and 229. I kinda like the fatter grip on the double stackers. Then one day when we weren't very busy, my manager said, "hey, go get that 229 and go shoot it some, tell me what you think." Baaaaaddddd move! I set the target about 12 yds out, and proceeded to tear the #%@# out of the X-ring. What a sweet shooter.

Now comes the dilema. I mean, I gotta have a Sig now, but I really don't have an extra 7-8 bills, so...........somethings gotta go. Well I never did really shoot my G22 very well, and that PT145PRO doesn't really get used very much, and.........did I mention that I really, really gotta have a Sig now?

OK, then....The PT145 and the G22 are in the used gun case now(the PT145 actually sold today) and I gotta decide on which Sig to order. Hmmmmm....

I think I have narrowed it down to these two choices;

1) P229R in 9mm - It would be my next CCW piece. The one I shot was in .40(kinda snappy) and since I'm selling my only 40, why not stick to 9mm.(I have other 9mm's)

2) P220Carry - I really like the 45 cartridge, and the gun feels good, but ammo is expensive and the capacity is kinda lacking.(I have other 45's too)

Probably go with the P229R at this point....wait...yeah, the P229R....I think...:banghead:

What say you?

Of all the Sigs you had to touch..

...

And shoot, a P229R 9mm..

Got to tell ya, my absolute 2 favorite ccw Sigs are both my P229R 9mm with CT grips (it's my nightstand night gun) and my day time ccw is my P229 non-railed 40cal..

Like you described, targets just shatter, where ever their aimed..

And, my Sig P220R is my home office gun, bar none, and like the smaller P229s, it too, delivers them big 230gr JHP's on-target without fail.

Not one of my Sigs has any failures of any kind, any ammo, and are the easiest guns to disassemble, inspect, clean, and reassemble out there, bar none.. KEY

Yep, you've drank from the Sig cup of life my friend, and it will grow over your life, like the rest of us.. The Sig family just keeps growing.. out of love, pure trust, and shock and awe (the good kind)

PS.. whatever you do, do not find the Sig Picture thread a few pages back.. no no no no no ..

PAPACHUCK-
First off I think the guy that told you to go shoot that P229 should kick in a couple of bucks towards your Sig ;)

I think the P229 9mm is a great choice. It's the perfect size for a CCW, night stand, or range gun.
With the price of ammo these days, unless you are rich, you'll be able to shoot a 9mm much more (for now anyway  ).

I'm sure the P220 Carry won't be far behind :p

That is a nice looking, smart pistol. Barrel end does look a little off center though.

Tell me, what should I be putting my $$ towards — P229 (not railed) in 9mm or a P228?

I gotta hold more Sigs. 1911a1s are nice but have a funny grip when you come back from doublestack 9mm (like M9).

Mine too.. lol

...

Yep, all my Sigs have the off-center barrel flaw (j/k) too..

But they all are on-the-money accurate..

I can shoot, and live, with that.. lol

Ahh I see it then.

Ignorance hurts. :(

Next pistol purchase in line: P228 probably. 9mm is cheap.

Then probably a P239. And then, a plastic connoction (not Glock) for rough enviroments, then a car gun, then a emergency backpack gun, and then...

See where it goes fellas? :(

:D

Not necessarily

IMHO, I think that if you get a chance to pick up a P228, you should.
There is nothing like a stamped slide Sig. I'm not saying that a P229 isn't a great gun, just that P228s are getting tougher to find and if you want one, try to get one now.
P229's will always be around. There are lots of PDs using them.

For just the conversion, it's $992. Add the sites, trigger job and custom magwell it's $1767. Those are prices not including the 220ST you need to provide. Finished result is awesome, but man I'm waaaay to poor for that. :)

A funny thing happened at the range...

Took my bro-in-law and my nephew to the local indoor range/shop, where I'm a member. Brought along various and sundry weapons choices for all to shoot, including my three-week-old P239. Took it out of the bag near the end of our session and loaded up a couple of mags, stepped up to the line, popped one in and squeezed off the first shot. Sqeezed off another one, and just had this funny feeling as I readied for my third shot. Yep...something wasn't quite kosher - I was missing the rear sight! I looked down on the floor, and there it was at my feet. Damned thing slid (or popped) right out of the groove! I sorta looked at my Sig and went "what the...?". Just so happens I purchased the gun at the same place where we were shooting, so after we were done I brought it upstairs and showed the guys working there what happened. Fortunately, they're a great crew, and the owner is top-notch. One of the guys told me the same thing happened to a new P239 they had just included in their rental stable. The owner took the gun and came back five minutes later, P239 good as new again. I asked what the deal was, and he stated that it looks like Sig has released a batch of P239s with what would appear to be an improper rear sight dovetail fitting. He said he had some extra sights on hand, and installed one of those. Being in somewhat of a rush, I was not able to test fire with the new sight, but I confirmed that it was solidly and securely seated in the channel, and looked square with the front sight. I wish I had asked what the difference was in the replacement sight. It's identical to the original, and no Loctite quick-fix, or anything of that nature was involved. Must be an infintesimal difference in the width of the sight. I'll ask when I go back to give it a test drive. I guess I'd be a little more bummed about the incident if I didn't just love the daggone P239, and the way that it makes me look like a half-way decent shot. ;) Just a great gun.

Now, after all of that expended hot air, I'm curious as to whether any other THR Sig owners (P239 or otherwise) have run into this "little problem"?

:what: Wow. I don't think I'll be doing that anytime soon.
I guess its one of those "If you have to ask, you can't afford it" things (I knew I should have stayed in college  )
With the price of 10mm ammo, I'd have to get a third job.

Wesson Smith-
I've never had that problem. I remember reading a post on the SIGForum about some CPOs having a problem with loose sights, IIRC it was the front sights.
Was your P239 a CPO?
It shouldn't be a problem down the road if the new sight that was installed is tight. You might want to check the front sight to make sure its tight.

P225 vs P239 size comparison

I was bored last night and decided to take some gun porn pictures.

I just got a set of Pachymayr grips for one of my P225s and I took some pictures of it along side my P239 9mm DA/SA with Hogue finger groove grips.
I tried to show the difference in size between the two.

(in this picture, the P239 (bottom) looks bigger, but its from the angle that the picture was taken :scrutiny: )

I have three Sigs and am happy with two of them

P229 .40SW - I bought this in November 2002 and it is my main carry gun
p239 9mm - purchased January 2007 and enjoy it.
Mosquito - purchased October 2005 and hate it. It is terrible and I wish I bought a Ruger or Browning.

I hope to get a P226 in the future, but I think that will be my last.

Welcome Justin-
Sorry to hear about the Mosquito. You aren't alone. It seems that there are more people that hate their Mosquito than like it.
You won't be disappointed with a P226. Try to find an older stamped slide W.German P226. They are a work of art.
The only problem with them is that you'll want to get a W.German P228 and a P220.

weight check

Does anyone have this info (or a second to do some weight measurements)?

Trying to tell if a fully loaded P220 weighs more or less than a fully loaded P226. Or where the P229 stands. I guess it all about the weight of the rounds, since the SigArms site has weights w/empty mags listed. For instance, the P220 weighs nearly 3 full ounces lighter than the P226, but do they even out fully loaded?

Anyone have the weight on:

  • 9 rounds of 45 ACP
  • 16 rounds of 9mm
  • 13 rounds of 40 or .357 SIG

Thanks!

According to my postal scale.....

9 rounds 230 grain .45acp.........6.25oz

16 rounds 124 grain 9mm..........7.0oz

13 rounds 125 grain 357SIG.......6.5oz

13 rounds 165 grain .40S&W......7.5oz

I have all three pistols and they really are not all that much different, size or weight wise. I doubt you'd be able to tell which was which when they were in a holster.

Thanks, AK103K, I appreciate the info. I suppose a few ounces here or there shouldn't make or break a decision. I just need one of each. Now if I can get the wife to understand this need... :D

1blindref - where did you get the grips in that last pic? I just picked up a 2nd P6 and am looking for grips.

I'd love another set of Pachmayr's but can't find any cheap.

If I may humbly suggest... please check out the S&W M&P for your plastic fantastic. I was never a huge fan of S&W, really more ambivalent about the S&W product until I shot and then bought an M&P .40 S&W. WOW!!!! If I were Gaston, I'd be nervous.

As sinful as it is, I have not shot a Sig Pro series. I do have my eye on a used one, but my gun purchases have been a little out of control lately.
