Gotta love the old coot. She asks him what's in the box and he says, "It's a shotgun. I'd hate to have to use it already."

Some much to comment on with this one.

The comments about Rebecca Aguilar on the YouTube site were decidedly Low Road (whether justified or not).

Defensive shootings are routinely decided at the grandjury level--or higher up the court system for that matter. That applies even to police shootings in Sullivan Co. TN. For the reporter to imply there was something unusual about a defensive gun use going to the grand jury just shows ignorance. That FBI UCR stat "killing of a felon during comission of a felony by a citizen" as adjudicated by intital police report (~170 per year) is just the tip of the iceberg.

And reporters like Rebecca Aguilera are not loose cannons rolling about the deck by themslves: there are producers, writers and others responsible for ambushing that man.
As well as the intrinsic anti-gun bias of the news media. The typical reporter is so soaked in the anti-gun culture they are unaware.

As for the man, I am glad he is alive and not the people who invaded his space: FIVE of the past eight murders in my area have been home invasions by thugs looking for drugs or money to buy drugs. In that man's position I would have every reason to feel my life was at risk.

Whatever your position on this story, or however much it angered you, or however much you dispise this woman's actions, the above quote is the MOST IMPORTANT thing to remember about the media.

She deserves what she got, but let's not pretend that she wasn't the scapegoat for others who ALSO deserved similar but will not suffer any reprecussions.

It is sad this type of thing happens. Obviously she didn't fear any repercussions. Accountability is lacking for the industry. Honest defenders shouldn't be hassled. One thing I haven't figured out is why some people ask the defender "is your __________ (insert property here) worth taking a human beings life" as opposed to asking the criminal "why is the TV worth risking your life?" For whatever reason, THOSE PEOPLE value the criminal over the honest citizen. I don't understand.

There's really only one thing you can say...

God bless Texas!

While a lot of us are happy she's fired, I'm wondering the real reason she got fired. I'm skeptical Fox (or Fox's owner) is taking a stance on behalf of gun owners. Yeah, it's good she got fired, period, but the real reason is what I want to know. Maybe letting her go was part of a suit settlement from a lawsuit gone south (?). I’m just skeptical.

Yes, there are others up the food chain responsible for cutting, pasting, spinning, and approving the piece to air.

Yet...

Her smarmy attitude is pretty obvious when she leans in and gets visibly excited, delivering that famous line: "Are you a trigger happy kind of person? Is that what you wanted to do? Shoot? To kill?"

No one forced her to ask that question. Regardless of being pro or anti-gun, that is a very insulting thing to phrase a question like that. A reporter as experienced as herself can use tact and technique to mold questions in such a manner other than what we saw as a direct attack.

Would you ask someone that accidentally hit a pedestrian that leaped onto the road, "Are you a lead footed kind of person? Is that what you wanted to do? Speed? To kill?"

No, you would probably phrase your questions differently.

I live in her viewing area and watched her for years.
I am shocked to learn she won an award! I have never seen her do a story that was award worthy.

I'm glad she is gone as she is an insult to reasonable people here in Texas.
She has been in Texas for a long long time and knows what the law and attitude is here.

I wish her the best and hope she learns something from this.

She was fired because a list of the tv stations advertizers was published and all the bloggers in the viewing area started sending emails to these companies. Not long after the station let her go. Money talks and BS walks!

It's too bad the old guy couldn't have asked her for HER address, so he could send the next burglar her way.

Crap I watch that channel everyday. I haven't noticed her gone yet. I guess I'll have to pay more attention. She was a real pain though. Glad shes gone. That poor old man doesn't deserve treatment like that.

public firings lie this one are usually done for "ethical reasons" (backed by economic factors)

think about that for a while.

Has nothing to do with guns...everything to do with ethics and economics.

Guys, just in case some of you missed it - The reason she got the boot wasn't because of "guns" or the "2nd Amendment" or "the right to self defense."

It was because ENOUGH folks got off their asses and called and wrote the station. FOLKS LIKE YOU.

You have PROOF here that that sort of thing works. So, next time we have a similar situation, chip in. You may be only a single bullet in the battle, but if you sling enough of 'em, you get the job done.

Public place doesn't matter. The ultimate private property as interpreted by our founders is yourself as an individual and you as a citizen have the right to be secure in your person, even when in public or on public property, except as case law defines public figures, etc.

Freedom of press isn't supposed to trump your individual right to privacy, especially if requested as stated in the article. That is why in most instances the press has to get releases from individuals they report on (once again, except for the exceptions created by case law over the last several decades).

Hopefully Mr. Walton will never have to shoot in defense again. Pretty outrageous. Mr. Walton said (not a direct quote)
I haven't fired a gun in 45 years.
Then he had to not only shoot 2 men because they were in his house (his business and the place he lived) but then go through this interview bringing it all up again.

Mr. Walton: keep on trucking man hopefully you never have to shoot again except maybe at some clay pigeons.
