Howdy folks-

Stopped by the gunshop today while my girlfriend was getting her hair cut, and saw the SR9 there. This was the first time I've handled one, though I think I read about one in a gunrag not too long ago. The search function is not a fan of my 3-letter words..

What are peoples overall feelings about these? Good experiences? Frequent lemons?

It felt great in the hand and I really liked the low bore axis and sights. I've been hunting for a decent 9mm for a little while and this seemed like a contender.

Anyone know the down-low? :)

I've read several reviews by folks that bought them and overall they seem very pleased. The only issue I read of was a peening problem where the slide locks up with the barrel and apparently that has been addressed. I am very interested in one of these myself as this is the first double stack gun that really feels comfortable and has the features I am looking for. You might want to go to rugerforum.com for more information as they are a pretty hot topic over there.

Been doing a lot of reading on these over at rugerforums.com this morning. Looks like there have been several problems with the SR9 at its intro, and they've (if I understand right) been corrected in later models.

1- There is possible of peening at the barrel with subsequent lockups. Not too cool.
2- Magazine release can get stuck when pressed, you have to examine the mags of the one you're about to buy to tell
3- I've read several reports about folks buying one, and then getting home to find lots of rust and pitting in the camblock, which had to be replaced

I really want or wanted to like this thing and give it the benefit of the doubt, but that's a lot of issues when compared to a competitor like the XD's or a Glock 19. Dissapointing... But who knows, I'm fickle.:uhoh:

I have an SR9 and I am very pleased with it.
Mine was test fired on 1-15-2008 and has none of the magazine problems that some have reported on earlier released pistols. I have been shooting it a lot since I bought it. I have a dozen 100 packs of WWB and at least that many reloads through mine with no problems. I like the way it points, it is accurate and the trigger is good on my gun.:)
I have read some of the posts on the Ruger forum and many seem to be from the same people who jump on every post about the SR9 and complain about Ruger service and problems when some of them don't even own one. I am glad I bought my SR9 before I ever heard of the Ruger forum or I might have been scared off by some of the posters there.

I know two people who have and shoot SR9s.
One is delighted: "This gun will be buried with me."
The other says his is functional but rough. Thorough cleaning to get out the metal shavings and grease; followed by shooting and dryfiring have helped, but the trigger is still tough. There is not yet any received wisdom on tuning them. I could not even find detail strip instructions for him to go by, and he says it is not obvious upon field stripping.

I plan on purchasing the SR9 next Fall and have no doubt that whatever issues the SR9 experienced initially will be completely addressed by Ruger and remedied. Unfortunately it seems the case with a number of new guns brought to market that there are bugs that need to be worked out in the first 6 months to year. Some gun manufacturers continue with products that will always have issues due to lack of concern, poor engineering etc. but my experience with Ruger is that they do correct whatever is wrong and wind up with winners.

Good observations folks, thanks much. I gave the shop a call and it looks like this particular pistol was tested in late january of this year, which should be well inside the 'safe' window after the changes.

400 rds through mine, had barrel peening after 200... ruger replaced the barrel... ill be testing it out again this weekend...

other than that, i love the gun, it shoots straight, it has low recoil and it fits like a glove... also just noticed that fobus has a holster for it now...

My only comment is that the grip is too long for my rather small hands, which means that in an IWB holster it will print more than necessary. For someone with average or large hands, this would not be an issue.

I really like mine, I use it as my ccw and I have over 1k rounds through it so far an no problems at all.

People complain about the trigger and safety a lot but I don't really have an issue with either.

I like mine and think the grip is great. Only have about 350 rounds through it so far but it is accurate and easy to shoot. The trigger is easier to work after some rounds have been put through it. Never was real bad!! Good gun for a good price. I paid $415 for mine so it is not that expensive. Time will tell!

I concur with that. Every single SR9 I've handled has had a singularly crappy trigger pull. One guy described it as trying to snap a live tree branch. That, and the fact that the safety is set so close against the slide that one can catch the skin of the palm while racking the slide (I saw one woman cut her hand nicely doing just that).

Sure, the grip feels good, but why bother when there's so many other, better polymer-framed pistols out there?

I have an SR9 that has right around 900 rounds through it, with none of the problems reported on the Ruger forum. My gun has been accurate out of the box, shoots to point of aim, fires FMJ with no shaving of bullets, no peening of the barrel, and has had no malfunctions of any kind. Of the 900 rounds, 50 of them were Federal Hydra-Shock 124-gr. +P+, and I never noticed a difference in recoil between them and standard pressure loads. My only complaint is that the loaded chamber indicator sticks up more than seems necessary, especially since the LCI on my M&Ps is just a cut out in the top of the chamber. I didn't find the trigger especially bad from the start, but shooting it has just made the trigger better. I was able to get two extra factory mags from cheaperthandirt.com for under $30 each. All in all, my SR9 is a keeper (unless, of course, the right deal should come along :D and it would have to be a HECK of a deal!)
