I have been toying with the idea of picking up a Puma model 92 in .454 Casull. it would, as I have recently learned here and by further study, also accept .45LC cartridges. They could be fun for target shooting and small game while I venture to say that Casull could handle almost anything North America has to offer.

So my question is, why hasn't this combination caught on? These guns are EXTREMELY hard to find. They look fine and are certainly cheap enough. Is there a quality problem, supply problem, operational problem (excessive recoil, etc.) or am I just deluded that it is a great combo?

Your comments appreciated!

If i'm not mistaken. I might prefer one in .460. Then it can eat 454 and 45lc. Then again, what can a 460 do that a 454 can't. It'd be handy for those states that don't allow taking deer with rifle calibers. I just might bite on that.

I think he meant 460 S&W Magnum, the 65000 psi big bore for which the performance center makes 10" gun that still has a compensator (meaning there is still a substantial amount of gas that might energize the bullet in a longer barrel). I don't know of any, but I could be wrong.

I have seen lever action rifles in the 454C chambering and have shot them. They are fine shooters and do kick more than a similar lever in .44mag. The 454C makes for a great gun to keep on the saddle.

my puma 92 is in .480 Ruger. it's a fun gun to shoot, for sure

edit: no idea why they haven't caught on. it makes perfect sense to me, and yeah, hard to beat the price

Overall look of the gun was cheap. And everytime I put that reciever up to my face, that thought came into my mind.

It never failed to light one off but accuracy even on some hand loads was marginal at best.

Now this was going back 5, 6 years maybe. They may have brought their quality up, but in dealing with the pressures of the 454, I wasn't taking any chances then.
