CC "badge"... Could you get in trouble with it

I'm not sure which lines you were reading between, because the ones I was reading pretty much said that Bald Bobby got that idea clearly. Me, in fact, too.

Robert Hairless made the impression that having a badge when you're not really a cop, will piss the cop off at you once the scene cools down and he finds out that your badge is just a CCW badge and not a real police officer's badge.

My point is that it really doesn't matter one bit how pissed of the cop is at what as long as that badge kept him from putting rounds into you by giving him a second of pause.

my life>officer's feeling of trust every time. I'll take a pissed off officer over rounds from his duty weapon every time.

If your use of the badge creates the impression you are a LEO you are looking at impersonating charges.

They serve no purpose.
Stay away.

Is it possible that Cirillos advice came from a time before cell phones? Where the 911 call would have come from a stranger who just heard gunshots instead of you who would be able to tell the 911 operator that your are licensed, description ect? It doesnt make sense to fear getting perforated by a cop/s that have been informed by the 911 caller that a incensed ccw holder has a n attacker at gunpoint, and then that ccw holder responds to thier arrival by holstering, or laying down his weapon and asking for directions.

Fake badges seem like a bad idea.

What I enjoy most about these badge discussions is the comments:

So far we've got the standard mall ninja stuff, the people who think that having a CCW badge is impersonating a police officer, and the gratuitous brothel inspector badge.

New though are the disparaging remarks about "fools" who are bounty hunters and the concerns about hurting a LEO's feelings because they trusted you when you trick them with your CCW badge.

Unless a state issued one as your CCW credentials it really seems pointless. Security guards have badges too though so I guess the CCW badge plays on the belief that a badge shows some type of authority- be it brothel inspector or FBI agent.

The only time I've ever seen someone with one was at a gun store here in JAX. He wore it on his belt just forward of his Glock. I guess the sight of a shiny badge next to your holster might keep someone from freaking out and dialing 911 if they spotted your CCW. Of course that benefit is balanced with the risk of a cop seeing your badge- it could hurt their feelings.

I don't have one because I don't see any real benefit to having one but I'll be brave and say that if you want to wear a CCW badge then knock yourself out- your biggest risk is going to be getting teased by folks here.

The only real use to one, could ALSO be the thing that gets you in trouble (IE, impersonating an officer): namely, having it visible should you have to draw your gun (or on your belt next to the gun in case you accidentally flash it) in order to cause less panic among bystanders. Because in a nutshell you WOULD be "impersonating an officer" by having them *think* you must be one because of the badge. OTOH, if it keeps you from getting shot by a LEO or another CCW holder...?

Ah, IANAL, so I'm not SURE about how much trouble you'd get in in such a situation. Anyhow, I'm in no hurry to acquire a badge.

If you want to be a cop in your spare time, inquire about the local LE reserves.

If you want to carry a concealed firearm for self defense, well, concealed means concealed.

You think a badge will keep you from getting shot? ROTFLMAO

There have been a lot of good points brought up in these posts (some bad ones too), but here is my 2/100 of a dollars worth.

I live in one of the few counties in California that is "almost" a SHALL ISSUE, county. We have a good 2A sheriff that has proven to be a blessing for those of us that CCW and I will continue to vote for her as long as she wants to keep the job.

But I'm straying off course here.

One of the county's fast rules is: NO CCW BADGES!! I believe the BAD outweighs the GOOD in this issue. I vote NO BADGES.......remember the classic line in "The Treasure of Sierra Madre"?

"......We don't need no stinking badges!!....."

personally .... I dont want anyone knowing I am carrying ... other than the people that know me really well ...

makes for a nice suprise if a BG decides to pick on me dont ya think

why advertise ... isnt that the purpose of a Concealed Carry / License to Carry or what ever it is called in your state ..

I wouldn't walk around with a friend if they were wearing either... Not even If I had a "I'm With Stupid" ----------> T-shirt on...

I was reading a police forum a week or so ago and this exact issue came up. To a one, the cops thought it was a really dumb idea.

The RSO unit specifically mentions badges and will pull a CCW for that reason alone, concealed means just that...........

Surely you meant to say NYC where you typed NY?

I presumed it was common knowledge that Cirillo was an NYPD officer. Didn't mean to offend any upstaters.

Comments about NY from people who don't live here get old quick.

Yeah, I understand. Same as the comments from Lower 48ers who've never been up here recommending bear guns or calibers.

In New Mexico permittees are sepcifically forbiden to carry a badge indicating they are licensed to carry a concealed weapon under NM Title 10, Chapter 8, Part 2, Paragraph 16(G):

"No person who is not a LEO may carry a badge, patch, card of any other indication of authority to carry a concealed hand gun in New Mexico other than the license issued by the Department of Public Safety."

You might want to check concealed carry regulations and rules issued by the agency that gave you the permitt. THese rules and regs do not always appear in the enabling act passed by your legislature.

I think the CCW badge is a bad idea. It won't help you with the cops if there is an incident. Waving a badge around in a wallet is a really dangerous. Even cops get shot by other cops responding to an emergency call. If I am ever in such a situation, my hands will be reaching for the sky or I may be spread eagle on the ground; anything to avoid being shot by accident by a nervous LEO.

What other purpose does such a badge have?

[What other purpose does such a badge have?]

That is easy. It makes a wannabe cop feel good.:)

It is a bad idea, and it is true that we in NM do not have that option, although I do not know anyone that I think would want one.

Regards,
Jerry

Looking thru the ads in the back of magazines, I was torn between the X-ray Glasses and the Backyard Spaceship myself.

OK, how many "CCW Badge" threads vs "9mm v .45ACP" threads? I guess as long as people see one of those ads, someone is going to ask the question (I confess I did too).

CCW badge will not impress a mutant ninja zombie bear with rabies and PMS so I say fegit it, useless idea. My final position.

How about a black jacket with large white block letters on the back that say ***?

I don't think that Robert Hairless made any such impression. I know him very well and I can't imagine him making any such thing. Maybe you misunderstood?

Seems to me that Mr. Hairless reported something suggested by a legendary New York City cop with decades of experience, someone who was widely respected by a great many knowledgeable and experienced law enforcement officers, who had carved out a second career training other law enforcement officers and had become famous and respected for that too. I don't know if he had an Internet screen name, though.

Jim Cirillo was killed in an automobile accident in July 2007, and he was a pretty sharp guy so he probably knew about cell phones. Somebody must have at least mentioned them to him at some time. He probably also knew a little about how cops behave when they arrive at a shooting scene. Somebody could have told him when he was teaching at the Federal Law Enforcement Training Center and many other places. I'd bet Jim Cirillo knew something about cops, if only from watching gangster movies, and maybe he thought about his advice before putting it on DVD for sale throughout the world by one of the major publishers in this field, Paladin Press. Could be that the publisher had some experience too and looked at the video before he had it edited and put on that DVD.

I was hesitant about raising Jim Cirillo's suggestion but decided to take the chance in case it might get some interesting responses from thoughtful people. I wasn't disappointed by the responses it got. :)

Since there's a remote possibility that one or two otherwise knowledgable people have never heard of Jim Cirillo, here's a very brief piece about him just after he died. At least some people in this forum were fortunate enough to have known and trained with him. I'd hoped to be one of them but waited too long.

Yup. You're okay. Interesting suggestion, wasn't it? I'm still thinking about it.

If we start to have a few nut jobs with badges and a CWP causing problems it could begin to unravel what a lot of people have worked very hard on over the past 20 or so years. Especially when our state law enforcement division isn't too crazy about concealed carry in the first place.

With that in mind, if they sell CCW badges, I don't do business with them.

Until stupid becomes a crime, you cannot get into trouble for just having a CCW badge.

Then again, it all depends on how you use it, what you tell people you are when you flash it.

Now that is an idea I can get behind! I am going to start with a black T shirt with large block letter on the chest and then see if I can find a so-called "raid jacket" to modify. The "?" definately adds something, a qualified editorial remark. So, the letters appear: ***?

I have a neighboriing family one of whose sons is a BATF SA and is assigned to this area. He actually showed up on a call I made about stolen explosives some years ago. If I can get this jacket made I swill send him one as a gift. He has enough humor to appreciate it, although I don ot think he would ear it.

Thanks for the suggestion, Bruce
