My new Overland duo-tone 'DesertDog' AK74...

Gary at Overland Industries put this rifle together for me, so it's time to post baby pictures of it. I call it the 'DesertDog'.

This gun started as the cheapest grade Bulgarian kit from ORF. It was in great shape, appeared to be unfired, and all the numbers matched.

It's now sporting a NoDak receiver, ACE folding stock & vertical grip, Red Star adjustable trigger group, Tapco piston, BlackJack recoil buffer, an aluminum UTG railed handguard, side-mount scope plate, and a Hogue pistol grip.

The red-dot sight is a Clonepoint that actually works pretty darn good, considering it was only 43 bucks shipped.

The rifle was painted duo-tone as per my request to Gary, and is DuraCoat Blackhawk coyote tan, and black. The tan color is a good bit darker than reflected in the pics. All in all, this is an exceptional rifle and the fit & finish is excellent.

I can't thank Gary and his crew enough for doing such a nice job for me, and I can easily recommend him for any AK builds a person might have.

His customer service was second to none, and that is a refreshing change from some of the builders out there now.

Hey, it least it isn't whored up too much(yet) with matching red, green, infrared and magenta lasers, tactical baby wipe container, a Mr. Fusion 90-gillion candlepower light that can take x-rays of people, or an crappy nylon adapter from Cheaper than Dirt that lets you mount a full-sized Gaiwanese Katana on the rail!

I think the DesertDog is pretty utilitarian right now, but it certainly wasn't built to appeal to a purist. Simple, wood-stocked AK's are fine for some folks but they usually just don't do it for me.

I didn't bring any targets back from when I took it out, but it was a bit more accurate than the SLR-95 I used to own. Of course, that is most likely because of the flat-shooting 5.45 cartridge than the rifle itself, but it still runs like it's supposed to.

The action was a bit stiff at first, but loosened right up after the first mag. When I go shooting again I will keep a target and post a pic of it here on the thread. Overall, I'm happy with the rifle and it sits within arms reach of the bed at night.

BTW BlackBearME, I might like pretty AK's but there ain't no ricer trash sitting in MY garage... just old American Iron!

I would love to have a Krebs, but the wife said no way. The UTG isn't a bad choice, and the money saved went someplace else. Still, the Krebs is the Cadillac of AK rails IMHO.

Yeah, kids are usually too rough on nice vehicles to take a chance on 'em. Much smarter to get an older disposable car for them to learn about the trials & tribulations of owning a vehicle. I killed the first car I owned, a '69 Cougar, because I didn't take care of it like I should have. I thrashed that poor thing and I have always regretted it. At least I learned from my mistakes.

As for the rifle, I usually like 'em black but I wanted something a little different this time. The duo-tone black and tan seemed like it would look pretty good, and I am pretty happy about how it came out.
