Gary at Overland Industries put this rifle together for me, so it's time to post baby pictures of it. I call it the 'DesertDog'.

This gun started as the cheapest grade Bulgarian kit from ORF. It was in great shape, appeared to be unfired, and all the numbers matched.

It's now sporting a NoDak receiver, ACE folding stock & vertical grip, Red Star adjustable trigger group, Tapco piston, BlackJack recoil buffer, an aluminum UTG railed handguard, side-mount scope plate, and a Hogue pistol grip.

The red-dot sight is a Clonepoint that actually works pretty darn good, considering it was only 43 bucks shipped.

The rifle was painted duo-tone as per my request to Gary, and is DuraCoat Blackhawk coyote tan, and black. The tan color is a good bit darker than reflected in the pics. All in all, this is an exceptional rifle and the fit & finish is excellent.

I can't thank Gary and his crew enough for doing such a nice job for me, and I can easily recommend him for any AK builds a person might have.

His customer service was second to none, and that is a refreshing change from some of the builders out there now.
Thanks for looking.

Hey, it least it isn't whored up too much(yet) with matching red, green, infrared and magenta lasers, tactical baby wipe container, a Mr. Fusion 90-gillion candlepower light that can take x-rays of people, or an crappy nylon adapter from Cheaper than Dirt that lets you mount a full-sized Gaiwanese Katana on the rail:p!

I think the DesertDog is pretty utilitarian right now, but it certainly wasn't built to appeal to a purist. Simple, wood-stocked AK's are fine for some folks but they usually just don't do it for me.

BTW, thanks for the compliment.

It's not really my style, I prefer a more simple look (as close to stock as possible), but if you like it then more power to you!

Enjoy it!

hows it shoot?
That's the important question, isn't it? It kind of makes me think of those 17-year-olds who put glass packs, spinners and racing stripes on their Honda Civics, and think they're the baddest car in town. They don't like it when I can beat them in a three-tone(that's red, blue and primer) '87 IROC Z28. Takes a while to learn it's what's inside that counts.

Don't get me wrong, I'm not knocking your gun - it looks sweet! And it's an AK, so unless someone screwed up horribly someone, I'm sure it shoots fine.

I didn't bring any targets back from when I took it out, but it was a bit more accurate than the SLR-95 I used to own. Of course, that is most likely because of the flat-shooting 5.45 cartridge than the rifle itself, but it still runs like it's supposed to.

The action was a bit stiff at first, but loosened right up after the first mag. When I go shooting again I will keep a target and post a pic of it here on the thread. Overall, I'm happy with the rifle and it sits within arms reach of the bed at night.

BTW BlackBearME, I might like pretty AK's but there ain't no ricer trash sitting in MY garage... just old American Iron:neener:!

beautiful man, I like it, alot.

makes me want to get up off my butt and finish the paint job I started on my AK, heh.

IMO, most of the crappiness of AK accuracy comes from poorly done barrels with bad crowns and off center bores. The bulgarians tend to be way above average. The saigas are also very solid in this regard.

Other than color, that looks more or less identical to my AK only I have a krebs quad rail and side-mount vertical foregrip and I used a milled receiver.

I would love to have a Krebs, but the wife said no way. The UTG isn't a bad choice, and the money saved went someplace else. Still, the Krebs is the Cadillac of AK rails IMHO.

That's actually a nifty way to break up the looks of the rifle, IMO.

And agreed--only let teens drive a POS that has no hope of going fast, or being modded, and maybe if you're lucky, they'll drive normally.

Yeah, kids are usually too rough on nice vehicles to take a chance on 'em. Much smarter to get an older disposable car for them to learn about the trials & tribulations of owning a vehicle. I killed the first car I owned, a '69 Cougar, because I didn't take care of it like I should have. I thrashed that poor thing and I have always regretted it. At least I learned from my mistakes.

As for the rifle, I usually like 'em black but I wanted something a little different this time. The duo-tone black and tan seemed like it would look pretty good, and I am pretty happy about how it came out.

What do you guys think of the quad rails? Can you use iron sights with them if you have a red dot mounted? I just bought an AK and am debating whether to use a quad rail or an ultimak to mount the red dot. Your advice would be helpful.
Thanks

How's the cheekweld with that Aimpoint up there in the stratosphere?

Don't get me wrong, I wanted very hard to like the combloc side-rail system, but I could not find a mount that did the following simultaneously:

1. Put the optic over the bore, or reasonably close

2. Kept the optic low enough to use with good cheekweld and no cheek riser.

You can do both, if you use the Ultimak gas tube rail and a tri-rail for the lower handguard.

I strongly dislike having my optics up high on the AK (see previous post), so for me Ultimak + red dot + low ring is the only way to go.

Mike

Gucci AK huh? I think I've seen it all now. :D

I like mine simple and utilitarian.

Now you don't see that everyday. Either one. I like them both. Flashy and cool vs utilitarian.

Will I still be able to use the Iron Sights w/a red dot on an ultimak?
Depends on the red dot. If you put an Aimpoint in a low ring, you can view the irons through the tube of the optic. "Reflex" style sights would block the irons, but you could put it on a QD mount and be able to dump it so you could see the irons if the sight went down.
