Sigh, we don't have BME in Texas....

So because Texas is something like 98% privately owned, is there anyone in the Austin and/or Houston area that would be willing to invite me and maybe a close friend or two on their land to shoot?

I'm really tired of shooting paper one shot at a time, I've been doing so for almost 2 years. Having to drive 20 miles and then pay $15 and drive another 20 miles home.

I have plenty of fun toys to share as well, although I can't provide the ammo for the owners personal shooting needs, I am willing to let the landowner shoot as much of their ammo from my guns as they want. Also the brass would be collected and given up, (mostly 9mm, 38spl, .45acp, .223).

A little about myself: I am a personal safety nazi and have the 4 rules drilled in my head. At the UT shooting range, I have instructed about 20 new shooters and drilled the same rules into their heads.

This is your chance to support poor college shooters! :)

Send a PM my way and maybe this is a chance to make a few new friends.

Same here. My biggest issue, though, is the cost of trying to go hunting around here. $3k and up per gun? You gotta be kidding me. I'm even seeing large amounts requested to take a wild hog or two, when all they do is tear up the land.

wow- I have a couple buddies who moved to Austin and love it. They want me to move on down also. I hate ta hear that about the shooting opportunities but then again Ohio is pretty much limited to ranges and private land for just shooting. Most clubs are paper or formal steel etc here also. I could do as I do here and get to know some landowners and do stuff for them.

From what you are saying why on earth would I as a landowner just give you use of my land while I have to pay taxes and maintenance on said land. You want to shoot junk and ya will let me put ammo I provide through your gun- gee what a deal.... likely ya will end up shootin at just paper for a looong time ;)

Put some time in helping around a ranch for free or in exchange for huntin shootin. Make friends at church or where ever but outright strangers only wanting to use land for free- good luck to that.

I always offer the landowner and his family to shoot even my class three and Iprovide the ammo- that works a fair bit...

Well, if you end up in Stephenville at any point, you're welcome to drop by and shoot if you're paying in brass. Not much in the way of a range yet, but I've got 10 acres and permission to use most of the adjacent acreage on two sides, a creekbed with a handgun-rated spinner and a skeet thrower. Only requirements are common sense, cleanup, and biodegradable clays. (local shop usually sells them for pretty reasonable prices)

I don't have land, but have a membership at Lone Star Gun Range. I get a little tired of shooting paper as well, so when I'm out there I take a bunch of clays with me and set them up on the berm and blow them up there. It's much more engaging and gives some fun immediate feedback from your shots.

Range fees are reasonable, and a full year's membership is only $65. They're in Lockhart, southeast of Austin, and about half an hour from town, generally. The owner, Matt, is a great guy. Additionally, moving & shooting and drawing from a holster are allowed there, which is great for building SD skills.

You can find location and contact info on their website at http://www.ctxpta.com/

NcongruNt, how do the rules work about moving/drawing? That sounds pretty cool from what i saw on their webpage. Their prices are comparable to what i am paying now but i would really like to be able to draw my gun during live fire and their night time photo looks like an improvement over my current night time shoots.
