Another vote for the M&P, best pistol I have ever owned
i own three .40s a beretta cougar,a hi power,and a walther p99. the cougar has by far the softest recoil. last week i went to the range with a friend he brought his 9mm m9. they seem to have about the same recoil.
the browning is not bad. should have gotten a 9mm walther.

Maybe a Sig P226 Elite Stainless? At 42.2oz, it should handle the recoil as good as any.
You could also try a 1911 in .40S&W. Para Ordinance makes one in their Limited series. STI make a 6" barrel Trojan in 40S&W that should be a pussycat.

Felt recoil
I have two Steyer 40 Cal. pistols ( S 40 & M 40) both of which I dislike, but they have less felt recoil (even the compact) than any other 40 auto I have ever fired. And I have probably fired at least 40 40s. (I own 9 different models of 5 makes in 40 Cal). Try a Steyer some folks really like them.

My Sigs and CZs have much less felt recoil compared to my M&Ps.
Also - I tend to use 180gr loads over the 155gr loads. To me, they 'snap' less.

The Sig 226 is VERY nice, and you can get a factory "refurbished" one pretty cheap.

Well as luck would have it the gun show is in town this weekend. I went to see what I couldn't live without and ended up coming home with the M&P40 for general shooting and a Kahr K40 (steel frame) for concealed duty. I know that one will have some recoil to it but it just felt right in the hand and the price was right. I figure it will be one to shoot a little /carry alot. Tomorrow will be the break in day...
Much thanks to all who recommended the M&P40. Went out and ran 200 rnds through it and it's just what the doctor ordered. Functioned perfectly and was actually a pleasure to shoot.
Now the only bad thing is that the gun show will still be here tomorrow and there was a Sig P220 Carry that was calling my name

Without a doubt, the Smith & Wesson 4006TSW! It's a little heavy if you plan to carry however.

Stoeger Cougar has the most manageable recoil of any 40 I own or have owned. Good grip size/angle, metal frame, and rotating barrel all add up to a 40cal joy to shoot.
