Yeah, we've hashed this one out so many times it's gotten boring.

We all know that each type of weapon has pros and cons.

We all know some penetrate more than others.

We all know some hold more shots than others.

We know about the myths, and the mistakes, and the morons.

We know, we know, we know...

I'm not interested in debating all that again, I just wonder what the numbers are among us THR folks.

So, here's the poll question:

In YOUR house, at 3:00 AM, you hear boots kicking in the front door. it's the bad guys.

What are you going to grab?

Twelve gauge, and stay close to the back up in case I need the extra ammo.

If they are kicking my door in all bets are off and I'll throw anything I have them and when the ammo runs out they damn well better be a lot bigger than me, and better with a blade.

On the other hand, if my dog says someone is there sneaking about I will cock the shotgun and tell them, once, to get out. After that, refer back to the second paragraph.

I prefer the shotgun, mostly because thats what I'm most accurate with (And a good shot with all three).

Shotgun!

Haven't you heard?

Why...just the sound of chambering a shell will cause home invaders to pee their pants and flee in terror.

I've had more than one "bump in the night" problem where I currently live (not a great neighborhood, 15 month lease though) and each time I've grabbed what I keep next to my bed, my AR-15.

Pistol for the ladies but shotgun if I have time...

Thanks for the poll. Always interesting to see the results.

We keep a 357 in my wife's night stand and I have a 45 semi auto with a laser sight in mine. Shotgun is in the closet - but only for my use...and if I have time to get it in play.

My wife and daughter are trained in the Ruger SP 101 357. The first round is shot, the remainding four are hollow point.

For them there is nothing to do but point and shoot. I have seen friends blow rifle shots by failing to do a full stroke on the bolt when excited by a buck. To me the key factor is KISS and training.

We are going to the farm again this weekend to punch some paper so I can relax when I am traveling.

Another way to look at this is actual data on justifiable homicied in the US This data is not just in the home. And it does not, of course, indcate which is best but which is most often used in cases where the weapon goes bang and a bag guy is going for a dirt nap!

I'd argue it depends a lot on where you live. Where I live there are no cops and I don't have to worry about neighbors. I do have to worry about multiple armed attackers and no backup. I like to keep a rifle handy because that's where the stopping power, accuracy and capacity is. If I lived in close quarters with lots of other people I'd probably lean toward a shotgun to avoid overpenetration and injurring neighbors. A pistol has the least stopping power but it offers capacity and is more selective than a shotgun in case you had to do something risky like smite a badguy who's taken one of your loved ones as a hostage/shield. They all do very different things, just figure out what your realistic threat is and what the requirements to deal with that threat are and pick the best tool for the job. It certainly makes sense to have one of each in your toolbox.

To answer the door in the wee hours or investigate a noise, handgun and flashlight.

If I know someone has broke in, the AR-10 (Surefire already mounted). Also used to dispatch coyotes that get too brave.
