Trying to figure that out....
Now, given that the Castle Doctrine states that the police have no obligation to protect us, and that in most areas in the USA you have a right to self-defense if you feel your life is in danger, please consider this scenario scenario.

Katrina-type disaster, major earthquake/riots in California, etc.. Armed mob marches on your house, guns drawn... you know they are going to loot/murder.

Leaving NFA and GCA legalities out of it (modify to semiauto and pay $200 tax), would this be legal? Of course it would not be paintballs, but rather fire live-ammunition.

Of course the step after that would be took it up to motion detectors... but I am curious as to what the legality would be in its base form....

1) Scenario is too far-fetched to bother with. Let's keep it in the real world.

2) Scenario has nothing whatever to do with "Castle Doctrine".

3) No, any sort of automated system like that would fall into the "booby trap" catagory and hence be illegal.

4) Get a good real estate agent and have them find you a house on top of a big pointy rock. It's legal and a lot cheaper.

Unless the "motion detector" was like a video-game and could somehow detect who was bad and who was good, it would be a useless liability. Anything from a dog to a looter to a neighborhood kid could set it off. Disaster-type situation, maybe a little bit less risk of killing an innocent, but what about some neighbor fleeing from their home getting cut down by the turret? Its a cool design and a cool idea, but I dont see how it could have any practical (or legal) place on the homefront. I guess if you put it INSIDE your house, like at the front door, that might be different, but either way....

Ok, I hadn't considered the "booby trap" idea... a friend sent me that link and we were just tossing ideas over beers... I thought I would bring it up here since THR is very up on the laws as they currently are.

I am not paranoid, just a bit hung-over now.

And no, I am not a mall-ninja..... although I do own duct tape :)

Most tragedies begin with "Hey Hold my beer!"...
