I like to go out to the desert and shoot, so usually i turn the on my radio in the car.. Anyways, last week i went out and listened to One Flew South, a great band that gets me focused and ready to shoot... Their album The LAst of The Good Guys has some great songs on it....

Ok... so is this tactical like playing "Panama" 24/7 for Noriega, or strategic like training for a mixed environment such as noise you might encounter from in store music speakers?

I see it's your first post, so you're still learning the rules of posting. Perhaps this would be better posted in general firearms posting.
Personally I will occaisionally listening to opera while practicing for small bore competition some people find this "strange" or "creepy"

I think music is great for shooting. Except, usually when I'm shooting, I have ear protection on, so I can't hear the music.

Hence why I need a suppressor and therefore everyone should donate to the "Get JCMAG a Suppressor Fund." :D

Actually listening to classical music could be good for your ability to concentrate and focus on your shooting. I remember a study done 10 or 15 years ago that based that very premise on a group of children in elementary school. By playing classical music very softly in the background while the students studied and took exams, those children did better overall, especially with their test scores, than children who were not given any music to listen to. What the researchers theorized was that the classical music helped the students to better organize their thoughts, have greater focus on what they were doing, and also provide a relaxing and therapeutic effect while taking exams. No reason it shouldn't do the same thing while your target shooting.

You could tuck the small headphones that come with Ipods and most other mp3 players into most around the ear hearing protection, or I suppose those Bose noise cancelling headphones might work too.

There was also a highly publisized study several years ago that showed infants/young children exposed to classical music grew up to do significantly better in math and science. And what is shooting, after hand-eye coordination ?
Math and science !!

I listen to Classical a lot when shooting. I use earbud headphones and tuck them under muffs. I do it more when I'm at the indoor range, since there aren't any commands to hear or cold-range time. outdoor range, only once in a blue moon.

Very relaxing.

I like it because there is something elegant about going prone with some good match ammo, an anschutz, and Wagner on the ipod. Helps me with my flow, keeps things from getting rigid and mechanical. If you tense up you start to build lactic acid and that is a no no.

I'm pretty sure the effect you're talking about is the "Mozart effect," but that study had nothing to do with kids. It was college-age people, and it showed slight, temporary improvements in spatial reasoning. I am not aware of any long-term tests on very young children.
The whole young-kid Mozart effect phenomenon is not based on any scientific studies, but rather a basic misunderstanding of the original study, to the best of my knowledge.

edit: Sorry to be such a buzzkill.

"I like playing my "And Justice For All" Metallica CD whilst handloading ammo at home... it helps me focus!"

"...and Justice for All" aka greatest album of all time. I listen to tinnitus when I'm at the range, since my earplugs make it more pronounced.

I have never tried this but It sounds like a good idea. I dont much care for classial but I think tom petty would do the trick for relaxing.

To each his own but for me personally, music is fine when cleaning guns but when shooting(or reloading) I want no distractions. In fact don't like to shoot next to someone listening to music at a range.

I have shot to Bach, Mozart, and I have tons of songs form the 60's I shoot to. My grandpa (A Vietnam vet) says I Listen to the same thing he Listen to in 1969.

At Knob Creek, we tend to play a lot of bluegrass and Grateful Dead at the Freak Show Tent... And jazz. And I'm the insane fellow who bitches at other campers for playing Lynrd Skynrd at high volumes... I don't need to get buzzkilled by anti-gun stuff...

yeah, gotta have some "relaxing" music when out plinking, I normally choose some heavy metal, classic rock or any kind of guitar rock. It does help me concentrate.
