i took my Savage 10FP to Gander the other night to try and catch the gunsmith before he went home for the day, and missed him. i walked to the gun counter and after 45 minutes of waiting inquired about a few accessories for the weapon. the guy behind the counter asked to see the rifle and upon opening the case looked at me and the gun like we had just fornicated with his mom.
he said "no, we wouldn't even carry a weapon like that'
i asked him why and he said 'look at the sign, we only deal in hunting and sport, this is for killing people' and gave me the look and vibe as if i was stupid and was not about to get any business from him.
i have purchased 2 firearms from this place in the past and several thousand dollars of my annual income goes into firearms. im a responsible gunowner with all my guns registered and kept within legal parameters. im severely pissed that he condescended to me like i was a normal street thug.
should i voice a complaint against this store to their higher up hq?
be mindful that the weapon still has the factory stock on it from the company, no crazy modifications other than adding a scope and rings.

was it an 'AR evil black rifle looking'? because all the ganders down here in houston sell tricked out bolties and ar's. I would deff send off an email to company headquarters.

Not Cool.

Hey There;
Don't feel alone. Some years back I took my .308 PSS w/ Springfield Gov . Model scope on it in a local gun store . (In the case). I needed scope caps large enough to fit the 56 mm end. The guy behind the counter freaked when I opened the case and loudly told me I would have to take that "Thing" out of the store now. I did.... The owner later told me I could come back and he would help me. I just said No thank you. I have since then spent over 7 or 8,000.00 dollars on guns. But not there. And Yes , I saw AR-15s in Gander Mountain store before. :uhoh:

If it was me I'd be asking to talk to the store's General Manager and explain to them that they're going to lose your business because of some yahoo trying to further his political agenda at the cost of their business. Our local GM carries AR's and M1A's . . . .FWIW.

Agreed

Hey again:
Sexy gun there. Mine was not even "Black" I had cammo painted it.
I think that fat stock and scope scared him.

You should have explained that killing people is only one of the reasons to have a rifle......Sheesh! Sometimes it comes in handy for puppies and kittens too.

pgeleven, definitely don't think it's a GM policy. The local GM here also sells ARs, much more evil looking than that 10FP.

The salesperson is in the wrong line of work.

Yeah, that guy has no business working at Gander if he is afraid of the black rifles! My local Gander in Lake Mary sells ARs, M1As, and traditional hunting rifles and I have never heard such an ignorant comment from any of their employees.

I freaking hate gander mountain. They have the best selection of any chain store, but their customer service at the gun counter is crap in a sack. I have never gone there and waited less than a half hour to talk with someone behind the counter, and it's never that busy. They take forever! All their employees are half awake.
Our gander mountain sells AR-15's. I mean... I've never seen one leave the shelf and every time I go there are 8 bushmasters, 2 sigsaurs, and 2 dpms. And they never ever sell any of them. But they have them.
I was looking at the sig AR's one day ($1600+)and a sales guys said "I don't know what you'd ever need that for. I'd suggest something like a shotgun or maybe a glock."
I was like "This gun costs twice what I would spend on a shotgun or a glock.... don't you think it's a bad move to talk someone out of buying something that could make your store a good chunk of change and possibly ensure your employment for a few more days?"
He laughed and said "Whatever! Just don't go shootin' up a middle school or a church".
I was so pissed that I literally dropped the gun and walked out of the store. I'm pretty sure the cable tied through the trigger guard caught it, but it made a bad noise and I can't be sure it didn't hit the ground.
As I'm walking away from the guns an employee says "Is there a problem?"
I say "Yeah. Bruce back there just screwed you out of about 20 of my friends business. If you don't like people buying guns then keep him around, but otherwise I suggest you get people that are willing to sell what you have on the shelves for purchase without complaining. If they have a problem they shouldn't be working here."
The guy walks to the gun counter as I keep walking for the door and I hear him yell "Bruce you stupid MOTHER**!@#@* STOP PISSING PEOPLE OFF".
Bruce was a top notch sarcastic jerk, and definitely wasn't afraid to cross the line..... and I know he doesn't represent the management, but I know that every guy (except for 1 old dude named John) that has worked there is a jerk, and does not do much to make me want to buy there.
Seriously.... I would love to shop at Gander but their prices are a little too high, their ammo is ungodly in price, and I swear half of their staff just wandered in off the streets becasue there are some bad attitudes, and some lazy people.

I want to like the place, but a few bad apples ruined it for me.

ours also sells AR's and M1A's too, but i somewhat think i was frowned upon because the weapon wasnt purchased in their store. still, it was very unprofessional of him to talk to a serious customer like that. i wasnt asking for a silencer or a full auto kit or anything, just a better bipod mount for my stock, which i ended up coming home and getting online from MidwayUSA. (theyre the best and never judge). i just am really amazed i would get that kind of lip about a legal common-caliber bolt-action rifle.

For real! Why judge you based on a common caliber bolt gun? I mean it's not like you were asking about a silencer, or full auto kit, or anything like that! Only a crazed gun nut would want anything like that.:fire:

Speaking to the manager on the spot would have been good. The guy who waited on you is the one with the serious problem and you can bet he has treated others that way... and that's something his boss needs to know about.

i was so pissed off/confused as to what went on i didnt even think of asking for a manager. ill bring it back in this weekend i think, maybe the accu-trigger needs an adjustment by the gunsmith. ill ask the gun counter first if they have advice on that particular rifle.

I'd be talking to the manager and if that doesn't work, call corporate. My local GM sells AR rifles and the like and all the staff is very polite. I can't believe someone would ever talk to a customer like that.

Our Gander here is MD will not do transfers for AR or AK varrients and I got a simular response when I brough my Savage FTR in for some accessories.

I would contact some one up the chain and lodge a complaint for sure. Depending on how that went I would make a decision as to whether I would ever shop there again or not.

You know it is a sad state of affairs when you run into antis at th gun counter.

The GM in Houston (290 & hwy 6) has AR15s, Aks, M1As, FALs, VZ 58s Hk SL8s, Kel tec rifles, FN Fs2000 & PS90s as well as SKS ect. The gunsmith will build ARs to order. They have tons of Ar15 tac-ti-cool goodies for the AR as well. But, then again that GM is in Houston.

Any "real" gunsmith work gets sent to the GM in Kenosha Wisconson or the Houston Store. They have 4 full time smiths.

"For real! Why judge you based on a common caliber bolt gun? I mean it's not like you were asking about a silencer, or full auto kit, or anything like that! Only a crazed gun nut would want anything like that." Blackhawk, I think he was referring to the fact that it wasn't something unusual to be asking about.

I'm not a big fan of GM either. All their counter guys are jerks or know-it-alls. It sucks cuz selection is decent, but staff and prices drive me away

I worked for those guys right out of collage. It was no picnic. Even the management (clear to the top) are jerks. I had one that didn't like my reply to what I was doing try to come across the counter at me. Reminding him that my former Marine status would hurt if he made it across the counter didn't put me on anyones good side either. Anyone worth keeping at Gander Mtn. is quickly pushed out the door. All that is left are the dregs of the sporting world.
