Do you look like a soft target?

Biker makes a great point. I really like that reference, thanks for sharing it.

Its not so much about how you look or style of dress, but your presence. Your confidence, comfort levels with adversity, self-awareness and demeanor matters much more.

the soft part is no problem. I look like another Broke@$$ redneck, hence not a target.
seriously as others have said it's posture. wolves know who the Dawgs are.

Oh, absolutely! Folks probably take one look at me when I'm running the rare errand and think "They let people like her out without an escort??"

For some reason, the odd, intrusive inquirer, on receiving a specific smile, blanches and moves away.

I'll never know why. . .

It's funny. Most times a "how you look" thread is started in S&T, the thread describes how "looking like a scum bag gang banger attracts LEO attention".... nice to see a different angle in this thread.

I look like a soft target. 5'9", 185lbs, usually wear jeans, t-shirt, carhart jacket, camo beanie and tennis shoes.

the gun I openly carry might pursuade some people though...

Edit:
I look like a soft target, so I just flip off anyone who looks at me to be safe.
- you owe me a keyboard haha

This thread has perfect timing for me.

This morning when I woke up I looked like the same hang-dog, owly, unkempt, deranged, in pain, and yet boyishly handsome Harley owner you all love.

I look like I'm ready to sell you insurance now.

The reason? It's May. The lovely month of May. I got a haircut.

I got a haircut
I tried that once about 4-5 years ago and decided it was an over-rated experience. I do however trim my beard once a year on or about the 1st of April just before turkey season starts ( I hate getting ticks in my beard)

I think I might look like a soft target.

My fiancee keeps telling me I'm huge. (Edit: As in I have a lot of muscle)
It's called stroking your ego. :neener:

I don't look overly "hard", but definitely harder than the average person. But perhaps a bit soft looking at only 5'8" and 160# - I'm definitely harder than I look. When I'm 70 and still packing, I'll be a LOT harder than I look.

Hmm, we've got a couple guys who get their hair and beard trimmed once/year whether they need it or not. Quite a sophisticated bunch. :p

I don't carry myself in such a way that would indicate that I'm a victim waiting to happen. I have been told that I "walk with confidence". While certainly not intentional (as in, being a jerk), I find that while walking through crowded spaces people tend to go around me rather than the converse. As well, my personality is not that of someone who is weak or fearful.

I think that those two characteristics reinforce each other and have a synergistic effect that says, "Find another target buddy."

From my POV, it's all about the attitude, not the clothes. You think a Secret Service guy looks like a "soft target" because he's dressed nicely instead of wearing grungy, ill-fitting clothes and three days' worth of stubble?

As an off-topic aside...baggy, overly casual clothes and a lack of grooming is one of my pet peeves about the current state of men's dress. A haircut won't kill ya. Neither will a nice shirt and slacks. And they won't make you look like an anti-gun wimp, either. Really. :neener:

Actually, if they pick up your are interviewing them (in the right way) it actually can discourage them. Don't get me wrong, this isn't the junior high "stare down" but making no eye contact whatsoever can be construed as a sign of weakness (this doesn't apply to women by the way).

I'm just curious, what about it doesn't apply to women, and what's your reasoning behind that? I tend to agree with you, but I'd also like an idea of what does work. I sometimes go with the very slight smile/nod if the individual looks harmless and I'm passing by. Or - the usual - I ignore them, looking past them to my destination. But what's the route to go if someone, based on a preliminary glance, is "interviewing" you?

I'm a woman so I'll give my $.02 worth...

I do make eye contact with people if I see them looking at me, especially if I think I'm being cased. I never want to appear to be in condition white.
For the record I'm over 40, average shape, long hair. I like to walk a lot, so I often find myself going down the side of the road and getting "checked out".

Since I moved to Arizona I think I look like an even worse target than before, since I open carry a P99.

human predators can discern prey. i don't have that phermone. the one thing you gotta watch out for is the stupid ones. some folks are too dumb to know what they can't handle. or the punk that wants to prove something

You just gave me an idea!!! All of us THR members should all go out this coming weekend, dressed-up like a bunch of retired, blue-haired women. Then, when the bad guys come up the jump these soft targets...we could thump 'em real good. That would fix soft-targets. Can you imagine the criminals complaining to the police:

<<Man...I was tryin' to rough-up this little, old lady. She kicked my butt, Dude! I wanna file a complaint! Dude...and she was really ugly! She looked like a man!>>

:neener:

Not soft, not hard. But I'm not going to change the way I look because I like the way I look. So I carry, they make the mistake o going after me, it could very well end up bad for them.

buck00 is absolutely right in his writeup.

I worked undercover in the absolutely worst parts of our city. When I walked down the street, the Locals could tell that I was not indigenous to the neighborhood, and so some would start "sizing me up" as a potential target.

However, I would immediately take a tactical assessment of them as a threat. I would first scan them head-to toe, then special check at their waistband, pocket, then the armpit.

Then I would watch their eyes, hands, & body language, then find a point of aim on the upper-hydraulics & upper central nervous system area of the potential threat.

And, of course, I had my jacket open, so that I could access my pistol immediately.

It's a funny thing. Although those folks sizing me up didn't know WHAT I was doing, they knew that I wasn't acting like food. In fact, they sensed that I was assessing THEM as food, & they didn't like it one bit.

They normally got nervous and gave me a wide birth (probably believing that I was crazy, dangerous, or possibly both).

In 23 years, I only had 1 challenge me, & he was a drug dealer that thought that I was trying to invade his turf.
