Long time IPSC shooter. Just picked up my first AR 15 and might get into 3 gun competition. What optics do you recommend?

How much do you want to spend? Aimpoint and ACOG are the best things since Picatinny if you're willing to drop the cash.

At our last 3 gun match I put a regular 3 x 9 scope on my AR with a carry handle mount. Since the majority of the shots were over 25 yards it was easy enough to pick up the shots and score well. The closer shots are all point - shoot anyway so the scope only got in my way a little bit. It really helped on the 200 yard flashers as well. Still did not hit them well. But at least I could see them.

I hate to ask - flat top receiver, right? ;) Otherwise, different choices.

Low power variables are popular, like 1-4x. Meopta, IOR, Leupold, even a shotgun scope like Simmons Pro-Diamond (which I used for a while - not a bad starter if the price of the good scopes scare you). Last Christmas I got an IOR 1.1-4x CQB, and it has been to a couple matches.

I went optics because of my vision. If all your matches are fairly close (<100 yards) think about iron sights.

A.C.O.G. with a J-point mounted on top.

A.C.O.G. for anything with range, J-Point for the close up stuff.

This combo is money.

look at the 1-3 weaver, caa makes a $50 mount.
cheaper than the millet but no lit recticle.
true 1x lets you keep both eyes open.
mine shots great but the range is generally under 25 yrds even though the 3x lets me go to 100 yrds. with solid hits.

I use a Trijicon Accu-Point 1,25-4x24 on a flat top with the lowest possible mounts on a rail extension to get it pretty far forward. Good for everything in IPSC / 3-gun. Really good deals are available, below 500 dollars it's a real bargain.
